For a budget PC, start with H.264 video and AAC audio over RTMPS, using constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and 1280×720 at 30 fps. Set H.264 video bitrate to YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps, then test whether your PC can encode continuously and your upload connection can sustain it with headroom. YouTube’s current guidance lists 3 Mbps as the minimum for 720p30; neither figure guarantees stable performance on a particular computer or Indian internet connection.
What “video format” means for a live stream
For live ingest, choose a codec and streaming settings—not an upload file container. H.264 is a practical compatibility-first video codec; AAC is a supported audio option, and RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted ingest protocol. YouTube also accepts H.265 and AV1, but the official guidance does not establish that an unspecified budget PC has a suitable encoder for either one. Choose a codec your actual encoder can sustain. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 live-ingest guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. They are platform recommendations, not measurements of Indian broadband or a guarantee that your PC can encode continuously.

These bitrate values are for the video stream. YouTube’s general advanced live settings specify 128 Kbps for stereo audio. The total stream traffic, including audio and any other traffic using the connection, must fit within the upload capacity available while broadcasting. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom; other people and devices sharing a connection can reduce the capacity available to the stream. Why 720p30 is a reasonable starting point
It asks for less visual detail and a lower frame rate than 1080p60, making it a practical first profile to test on modest equipment. That does not mean every budget PC can sustain it: encoder load varies by hardware, software, source video, and settings. If the encoder struggles or the stream health reports problems, lower the load and test again rather than assuming a single minimum bitrate will solve the issue.

When to move to 1080p or 60 fps
Use 1080p when extra image detail matters and the PC can encode it while the connection sustains the recommended bitrate with headroom. Use 60 fps when motion benefits from smoother playback and the computer can handle the additional processing. For a largely static scene, 30 fps may be an adequate trade-off. No benchmark in the available YouTube guidance establishes CPU or GPU requirements for a specific Indian PC build.
Set up and test the encoder
- Confirm the channel can go live. Verify the channel and check for live-streaming restrictions or eligibility requirements in YouTube Studio before configuring the encoder. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Choose RTMPS and the stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream, then use its stream settings to obtain the server details and stream key. Enter those details in the encoder and keep the key private; anyone with access to it could send a stream to your channel. Labels can differ by encoder and YouTube Studio interface.
- Set the video profile. Begin at 1280×720, 30 fps, H.264, SDR, progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 color. Set rate control to CBR, keyframes to every two seconds, and video bitrate to 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30. YouTube’s table lists 3 Mbps as the minimum; start lower only if needed to diagnose a constrained setup, not as a guarantee of good quality.
- Set audio. Choose AAC; for stereo, YouTube’s general advanced live guidance specifies 128 Kbps.
- Measure the connection under realistic conditions. Check upload speed while other expected household or office traffic is active. Keep approximately 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate, and account for any backup feed or other network use.
- Run a test broadcast. Use representative audio and motion, watch YouTube’s stream health and encoder load, and inspect the resulting stream on your channel and on a phone. Plan for a 24/7 stream’s replay and rewind limits
A continuous broadcast has an important trade-off: YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube’s guidance states, “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” If preserving the full recording matters, record locally and decide whether to end and restart broadcast segments before the archive limit; YouTube’s reviewed help pages do not prescribe a restart cadence. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. A local recording is a separate backup, not a way to guarantee that viewers can rewind the live broadcast. Turn on DVR on live streams
Size local storage for the bitrate and how long you want to retain recordings. An external SSD can store a local backup, but it does not improve encoding performance or prevent the broadcast from disconnecting.

Troubleshoot common problems
- Stream health shows connection problems: Check the actual upload speed during the stream, pause competing uploads or downloads, and reduce bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the profile with headroom.
- Video stutters or the encoder struggles: Check CPU/GPU load and encoder warnings. Try 720p30 if using a heavier profile; avoid raising frame rate or resolution until a representative test stays stable.
- Stream fails to connect: Confirm the selected RTMPS server details and current stream key in YouTube Studio, and check that live streaming is enabled for the channel. Replace a key in the encoder if you generated a new one.
- Audio is missing or unsuitable: Check that the intended audio source is selected and producing signal, then confirm the encoder is using a supported audio format such as AAC.
- No replay appears after a long broadcast: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. For a recording you need to keep, use a local archive rather than relying on YouTube’s replay.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough: DVR can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; this is separate from whether you saved a local recording.
