The best USB power strip depends on the job: choose the Anker 351 for many AC outlets and conventional surge protection, the Anker Prime 240W for USB-C laptop charging, or the Anker Nano Clamp 70W for a tidy mounted desk. These products are not interchangeable because outlet count, USB-C wattage, surge rating, and mounting differ.

A USB power strip combines ordinary AC outlets with USB charging ports, but the label can describe several very different products. A traditional surge protector may offer 8–12 AC outlets and modest USB charging, while a desktop charging station may provide only two AC outlets but enough USB-C power for one or more laptops.

Key takeaways

  • The Anker 351 is the strongest conventional USB surge protector for readers who need 12 AC outlets, three USB ports, and a listed 2,100-joule rating.
  • The Anker Prime Charging Station provides up to 140W from one compatible USB-C port and 240W total USB output, but it has only two AC outlets and 300J of surge protection.
  • The Anker Nano Clamp delivers 70W total USB output and 1,500J of surge protection, but the clamp fits desks approximately 0.6–1.8 inches thick and is unsuitable for glass desks.
  • A USB-C connector does not guarantee laptop charging: the port, device, cable, charging protocol, and simultaneous port use determine the actual power.
  • For computers, televisions, and game consoles, approximately 2,000J or more is a useful target according to Tom’s Guide’s surge-protector guidance, but joules are only one part of a safety evaluation.

Best USB power strips at a glance

The table separates conventional surge protectors from USB-focused desktop charging stations. A product with the highest USB wattage is not automatically the best choice for a gaming setup or home theater with many AC-powered devices.

Which USB power strip is best overall?

The Anker 351 is the best overall conventional USB power strip for most desks, entertainment centers, and gaming setups. Tom’s Guide selected the Anker 351 as its best overall surge protector after testing. The publication lists 12 AC outlets, three USB ports, 2,100 joules, a 5-foot cord, and an 18-month warranty, while also noting the usefulness of its outlet orientation.

The Anker 351 makes sense when the main requirement is connecting many AC devices: monitors, speakers, consoles, chargers, lamps, routers, and desktop accessories. A flat plug helps the strip sit closer to a wall, and the design is more suitable for a crowded workstation than a two-outlet charging station.

The Anker 351 is not the best USB-C laptop charger. Its USB section is modest compared with 65W, 100W, or 140W desktop charging stations. Large power bricks can also make evenly spaced outlets feel cramped, a limitation Tom’s Guide identified in its testing coverage.

What is the best USB power strip for laptop charging?

The Anker Prime Charging Station 8-in-1, 240W is the best choice here when fast USB-C charging matters more than AC outlet count. The station has four USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, two AC outlets, 240W of total USB output, and up to 140W from one USB-C port, according to Anker’s product specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Anker Prime is best understood as a high-power desktop charging station rather than a traditional power strip. A compatible USB-C laptop can connect directly to the station, leaving the two AC outlets for a monitor, desk lamp, or other equipment. Anker also lists app control and power monitoring, which may appeal to users who want to observe charging behavior.

The trade-off is important: Anker lists only 300J of surge protection. The Anker Prime therefore should not replace a high-outlet surge protector for a workstation with many AC-powered devices. Buyers also need a compatible laptop, charger protocol, and cable; a 5A E-marker USB-C cable may be required for charging above 60W.

Is the Anker Nano Clamp 70W best for a tidy desk?

The Anker Nano Power Strip 10-in-1, 70W, Clamp is the best fit for a clean, mounted desk setup when 70W of shared USB output is sufficient. The clamp keeps the power strip at the desk edge instead of on the floor, and Anker lists 70W total USB output, 1,500J of surge protection, overload cutoff, and dual USB-C ports on the product page.

The clamp accommodates desks approximately 0.6–1.8 inches thick. The Anker Nano Clamp is not recommended for glass surfaces, edges angled more than 45 degrees, or desktops outside that thickness range. Measure the desk before buying, especially when the desk has a beveled edge or a thick rear lip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 70W figure is shared across the USB ports. Multiple connected devices reduce the power available to each port, and Anker notes that laptops requiring more than 45W may be better connected to an AC outlet when several USB ports are active. The Anker Nano Clamp is convenient for a laptop, phone, tablet, and accessories, but it is not a substitute for a 140W charging station when several high-demand devices charge simultaneously.

What is the best budget USB power strip?

The Anker 341 is the best simple, lower-cost conventional option for phones and small accessories. The Anker 341 has eight AC outlets, one 20W USB-C port, two USB-A ports, 2,000J of surge protection, a 5-foot cord, a flat plug, and wall-mounting slots, according to Anker’s specifications.

The Anker 341 is appropriate for charging phones, earbuds, watches, controllers, and other low-power devices while powering ordinary desk equipment from the AC outlets. The 20W USB-C port is not equivalent to a 65W USB-C Power Delivery charger, so laptop buyers should not select the Anker 341 expecting full-speed USB-C laptop charging.

Wall-mounting slots make the Anker 341 useful behind a desk or entertainment center. Check the mounting surface and cable direction before installation, because a flat plug and a wall-mounted body do not guarantee that every large adapter will fit comfortably.

What are the best alternatives?

Baseus GaN3 Pro 6 Ports Power Strip 65W

The Baseus GaN3 Pro combines two AC outlets with two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports. Baseus specifies 65W of shared USB output. The official U.S. product page showed a $34.99 sale price against a $49.99 list price during the research pass, but the product was marked sold out. Check the official Baseus page for current stock, regional warranty support, and updated specifications before purchase.

The Baseus is a useful compact option if the buyer wants more USB ports than a basic strip and only needs two AC outlets. Shared 65W output means the full figure is not delivered independently to every USB port.

Belkin 2-Outlet Charging Station 140W

The Belkin 140W Charging Station is a premium USB-C alternative for home-office users. Belkin positions the model with three USB-C ports and one USB-A port, providing 140W total across the USB ports with power shared between connected devices, alongside two AC outlets. The current positioning is described on Belkin’s power-strip and surge-protector page.

The Belkin station is closer to a desktop charger than a conventional 6-, 8-, or 12-outlet surge protector. Choose it when USB-C laptop charging is the priority; choose the Anker 351 or another conventional surge protector when the setup needs many AC connections.

Monoprice 12 Outlet Surge Protector

Monoprice is a conventional high-surge alternative rather than a USB-C charging station. Tom’s Guide lists a 4,320J rating, 12 outlets, and a 6-foot cord, but the model has only two USB ports and no listed equipment-protection coverage in the supplied comparison. Independent coverage makes it worth considering when surge capacity and AC outlet count matter more than USB-C speed, but verify the current model, certification, warranty, and availability before buying.

How much USB-C power do you need?

USB-C power should be judged by wattage, charging protocol, and power sharing—not by the presence or number of USB-C connectors.

USB-C output Usually suitable for What to check
15–20W Phones, earbuds, watches, and small accessories Not normally a full laptop charger
30–45W Phones, tablets, handheld gaming devices, and some small laptops Confirm the laptop’s minimum charging requirement
65–70W MacBook Air-class laptops, tablets, phones, and moderate multi-device charging Output is usually shared when multiple ports are active
100W Many productivity laptops and some creator or gaming laptops Check the laptop, cable, and USB-PD profiles
140W Higher-demand USB-C laptops Requires compatible hardware and, on some products, a 5A E-marker cable
200W or more total Multiple high-power USB-C devices Total output is divided among connected ports

USB-C describes the connector shape, not the charging speed. A USB-C port can provide 5W, 15W, 20W, 65W, 100W, or 140W depending on the product. The laptop, cable, charging protocol, and power station must agree on the required power level.

Single-port maximum and total output are different specifications. The Anker Prime can provide up to 140W from one compatible USB-C port while offering 240W total across its USB ports. The Anker Nano Clamp provides 70W total, not 70W independently from every port. A station advertised at 65W or 240W therefore does not promise that every connected laptop receives that amount at the same time.

How important is USB-C Power Delivery?

USB-C Power Delivery is important when the strip must charge a laptop or tablet at useful speed. A USB-C connector without a stated USB-PD wattage may be no more capable than a basic phone-charging port.

Before buying, compare the charger requirement printed on the laptop or its original adapter with the product’s single-port output. Then check the cable rating. Both the Anker Prime and Anker Nano documentation mention that a 5A E-marker cable may be needed above 60W. A lower-rated cable, incompatible charging profile, or simultaneous use of several ports can reduce charging speed.

How much surge protection is enough?

For computers, televisions, and game consoles, approximately 2,000J or more is a useful target, but joules are not a complete safety score. Tom’s Guide describes 2,000J or more as generally adequate for most electronics and consoles and reports tested surge protectors ranging from 900J compact units to 4,320J conventional protectors in its comparison.

A joule rating describes the energy-absorption capacity claimed for the surge-protection components. Higher is generally better within comparable products, but buyers should also check the certification, overload protection, protection-status indicator, automatic cutoff, cord quality, thermal design, and warranty terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Product Listed surge rating Interpretation
Anker 351 2,100J Strong fit for a conventional electronics surge protector
Anker 341 2,000J Useful protection level for a basic electronics strip
Anker Nano Clamp 1,500J Reasonable for a mounted desk, but below the 2,000J target used by some comparison guidance
Anker Prime 300J Modest protection for a high-power charging station

Surge protection is consumable. Metal-oxide varistors and related components can degrade after absorbing significant surges. Tom’s Guide explains that surge protectors do not last forever and recommends paying attention to indicators showing that protection has failed or the unit has cut off. A surge protector reduces risk from certain transient events; it does not guarantee protection from a direct lightning strike, every electrical fault, or unsafe household wiring.

What is the difference between a power strip and a surge protector?

A basic power strip expands the number of available outlets, while a surge protector adds components intended to divert or absorb voltage spikes. Belkin explains the distinction on its power-strip and surge-protector page.

A USB power strip may include AC outlets and USB charging without meaningful surge protection. A surge protector should disclose a joule rating and commonly includes a protection-status light. A desktop charging station prioritizes USB-C power and may have only two AC outlets. A power cube uses a compact multi-sided shape for travel or small spaces. Buyers should identify the category before comparing port counts.

Which safety certifications should you look for?

Look for a recognized safety mark on the product and documentation, then verify the exact model and certification scope. Anker’s buying guidance identifies UL 1363 for basic power strips and UL 1449 for surge-protective devices, while ETL is also widely accepted; the guidance appears in Anker’s power-strip guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

UL 1363 alone should not be treated as proof of meaningful surge-protection performance. Basic strip safety certification and surge-protector certification are different claims. The Anker Prime product page separately lists cTUVus, UL 1363, UL 498, and UL 62368. Verify the mark, listing, product model, voltage, and intended market rather than relying on a generic “certified” label.

What AC load can a USB power strip support?

Many U.S. USB power strips are designed around a 15A, 125V input and approximately 1,875W maximum AC load, but the exact rating belongs to the individual product. Anker lists that rating for the Anker 341 and Nano Clamp models.

The total load across all AC outlets matters. A power strip does not increase the capacity of the wall circuit. Avoid connecting heaters, kettles, hair dryers, air conditioners, refrigerators, or other high-wattage appliances unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that use. Do not daisy-chain power strips or extension cords, and keep the strip ventilated.

USB output and AC output are separate specifications, but the complete product still has thermal and circuit limits. A strip with high USB wattage is not automatically suitable for high-wattage appliances.

How should outlet layout and mounting affect the choice?

Outlet geometry can matter as much as outlet count because large laptop adapters may block neighboring sockets. Compare outlet spacing, orientation, cord length, plug angle, switch position, wall-mounting slots, desk clamps, strain relief, and whether the power button or resettable breaker remains reachable.

The Anker 351’s outlet orientation received positive attention from Tom’s Guide, although bulky plugs can still crowd evenly spaced outlets. The Anker 341 has wall-mounting slots and a 45-degree flat plug. A desk-clamp product keeps cables accessible but limits the installation surface. A travel cube saves space but normally sacrifices outlet count and surge capacity.

When is a USB power strip the wrong product?

A separate USB-C GaN charger plus a conventional surge protector is often better when the buyer needs both many AC outlets and strong laptop charging. Separating the two devices lets the buyer choose a high-outlet surge protector for monitors, consoles, networking equipment, and other AC loads, then select a USB-C charger with the exact wattage needed for the laptop.

  • Choose a separate charger and surge protector when USB power is shared too aggressively.
  • Choose a conventional high-outlet surge protector when the setup has many AC devices.
  • Choose a longer-cord or heavy-duty model when the strip must reach a distant wall outlet or serve a workshop-like environment.
  • Avoid products with unclear safety certification or undocumented surge ratings.
  • Consider a UPS for computers and networking equipment that need battery backup, not merely surge suppression.
  • Consider whole-home or panel-level surge protection when the goal is protection for the electrical system rather than a single outlet.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Identify the category: conventional strip, surge protector, USB-C charging station, power cube, or travel model.
  2. Count AC devices: include monitors, consoles, speakers, lamps, routers, and chargers—not just the devices that need USB.
  3. Match USB-C wattage: compare the laptop’s requirement with the station’s single-port maximum.
  4. Read the sharing chart: determine what happens when two or more USB ports are active.
  5. Check surge protection: look for a clearly stated joule rating, status indicator, and cutoff behavior.
  6. Verify certification: confirm the actual mark and model rather than trusting a generic marketing statement.
  7. Check the AC rating: confirm voltage, amperage, and maximum wattage for the U.S. electrical system.
  8. Measure the space: account for bulky plugs, wall clearance, desk thickness, clamp angle, and cord reach.
  9. Review warranty and availability: treat connected-equipment coverage as conditional and recheck price and stock before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a USB power strip charge a laptop?

A USB power strip can charge a laptop only when the USB-C port supports the laptop’s required USB Power Delivery wattage, the cable supports that level, and simultaneous port use does not reduce output below the requirement. A 20W USB-C port such as the one on the Anker 341 is mainly for phones and small accessories, while stations such as the Anker Prime can provide up to 140W from one compatible port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a higher joule rating always better?

A higher joule rating generally indicates greater surge-energy absorption capacity, but a higher number is not a complete safety score. Buyers should also verify recognized certification, overload protection, a protection-status indicator, cord quality, and the product’s documentation.

Can I plug a power strip into another power strip?

No. Do not daisy-chain power strips or extension cords. Daisy-chaining can overload wiring and defeats the purpose of selecting a strip with a known current rating.

Is the Anker Prime 240W a conventional power strip?

The Anker Prime 240W is primarily a high-power desktop charging station, not a conventional many-outlet surge protector. It has two AC outlets, 240W total USB output, up to 140W from one USB-C port, and a listed 300J surge rating.

The Bottom Line

Buy the Anker 351 when AC outlet count and conventional surge protection come first. Buy the Anker Prime 240W when USB-C laptop charging comes first, accepting its two AC outlets and 300J rating. Choose the Anker Nano Clamp 70W for a mounted desk, and choose the Anker 341 for phones and accessories. If a setup needs both many AC outlets and high-power USB-C charging, a conventional surge protector paired with a separate USB-C GaN charger is the more flexible solution.
