The best USB-C power meter depends on what you need to find out. For a quick check of voltage, current, and power in a charging setup, choose a straightforward inline meter. To inspect USB Power Delivery behavior or read a cable’s E-marker, choose a tester whose documentation explicitly supports those functions. A meter can show what is happening in one setup; it cannot, by itself, prove a cable’s real-world performance or explain every limit imposed by the charger and device.

Which kind of USB-C meter do you need?

USB-C testers range from simple inline displays to diagnostic instruments that identify charging protocols, inspect PD negotiation, or read information stored in a cable. These are different jobs, not interchangeable features.

  • Live charging check: Read voltage and current, and sometimes calculated power, while a charger powers a device.
  • Charger or PD troubleshooting: Look for a protocol-aware tester that documents the specific detection or negotiation features you need.
  • Cable inventory: Choose a model that can read E-marker information from compatible cables. That readout is what the marker declares; it is not a physical test that the cable actually delivers its declared performance.

For a basic live check, the Plugable meter is the simplest fit among the candidates below. For cable identification or protocol diagnostics, consider the KM003C, FNB58, FNB-C2, or PassMark PRO—but compare their documented functions and electrical limits before choosing.

The surfaced manual describes reading USB-C cable E-marker information and listing cable capabilities. Maximum voltage, current, power, and accuracy: not stated in the surfaced manual material.
FNIRSI FNB58 Detailed live measurement limits and accuracy: not stated in the cited manufacturer description. FNIRSI describes protocol-capability detection and E-marker data reading, including vendor and capability fields. Maximum voltage, current, power, and accuracy: not stated in the cited manufacturer description.
FNIRSI FNB-C2 FNIRSI describes ripple testing and recording. FNIRSI describes it as a PD 3.1 tester with E-marker reading and cable simulation. Confirm exact voltage, current, power ceilings, and accuracy in current documentation; the cited description does not establish comparable figures.
PassMark USB Power Delivery Tester PRO PassMark documents charger and cable detection. PassMark documents EPR and E-marked cable information. PassMark specifies 58 V maximum sink input and 240 W continuous maximum load (5 A at 48 V). Its guide gives typical default voltage accuracy around 1% and current measurement of ±10 mA; these figures apply to this tester, not the other models.

Product specifications and descriptions are not independent head-to-head test results. The available documentation does not establish a single objectively tested winner, and several candidates’ comparable electrical ceilings or accuracy figures are not stated in the cited material.

Best choices by task

For basic live charging checks: Plugable VAMETER

Plugable describes the VAMETER as a bidirectional inline meter that measures voltage and amperage, shows current direction, and passes USB data. It suits someone who wants to observe a charging connection without buying protocol-analysis features they do not need. Its documented description here does not establish E-marker reading or PD negotiation analysis, so do not choose it on the assumption that it can perform those diagnostics.

For reading cable E-markers: ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C

The surfaced KM003C manual describes reading USB-C cable E-marker information and listing cable capabilities, making it a candidate for cable identification. Treat the result as information read from a compatible cable’s marker, not as proof from a load, resistance, or compliance test. The manual surfaced for this model is hosted on an Alibaba CDN; check current model documentation for the version you intend to buy.

For protocol detection and E-marker fields: FNIRSI FNB58

FNIRSI describes the FNB58 as detecting charger protocol capabilities and reading cable E-marker data, including vendor and capability fields. Those are manufacturer-described functions, not independent verification of measurement performance. Confirm that the current version’s documentation covers the specific protocol and cable information you need.

For a feature-rich PD 3.1 toolkit: FNIRSI FNB-C2

FNIRSI describes the FNB-C2 as a PD 3.1 tester with ripple testing, recording, E-marker reading, and cable simulation. This combination may suit deeper troubleshooting, but the cited information does not establish a comparable maximum voltage, current, power, or accuracy figure. Check the current manual for those limits before using it on a high-power setup.

For documented EPR and higher-power limits: PassMark USB Power Delivery Tester PRO

PassMark’s specifications list a 58 V maximum sink input and a 240 W continuous maximum load (5 A at 48 V), as well as charger and cable detection including EPR and E-marked cable information. These are PassMark’s product specifications, not category standards or comparative test results. PassMark’s guide reports typical default voltage accuracy around 1% and current measurement of ±10 mA for this tester; it also notes that calibration requires suitable external measurement equipment.

How to choose a meter that fits your setup

  1. Define the question. If you only need to see voltage and current during charging, a basic inline meter may be enough. If you need to identify advertised charging modes, examine PD behavior, or read E-marker fields, verify that the tester explicitly supports that task.
  2. Check the electrical limits. Compare the meter’s maximum voltage, current, and power with the highest level you expect to test. A meter whose ceiling is below the setup’s range cannot measure that system’s full range. PassMark’s 58 V and 240 W figures, for example, are specifications for its PRO model only.
  3. Separate display resolution from accuracy. A display showing fine increments does not establish that its readings are equally accurate. Look for a stated accuracy or tolerance and note whether it applies to voltage, current, or both. PassMark’s typical default figures are specific to its tester guide and should not be generalized to competing products.
  4. Distinguish marker reading from cable testing. E-marker data identifies what a compatible cable’s marker reports. If you need to establish actual electrical performance, check whether the tester separately documents relevant physical tests, such as continuity or resistance; an E-marker readout alone does not establish those results.
  5. Check usability and documentation. Confirm the exact model revision, supported protocols, connection direction, and any required operating steps in the current manual. Features and limits can differ between models and change with revisions.

What a USB-C power meter can—and cannot—tell you

Voltage and current readings describe what is flowing in the particular charger-device arrangement at the time of measurement. They can help reveal whether a connection is delivering power and how that behavior changes under a given condition. They do not by themselves identify every reason a system is limited: the charger, cable, device, negotiated mode, and test conditions can all matter.
