For a turntable under $500, compare the cost of the complete setup—not just the deck—and check whether it includes a phono stage. A turntable without one needs an amplifier with a compatible phono input or a separate phono preamp. Because current US prices and stock for the models discussed here have not been established, treat them as candidates to verify rather than confirmed under-$500 picks.

How to choose a turntable under $500

Start with the audio equipment you already own. A deck that looks affordable can require an extra component, while an included phono stage can simplify connection to powered speakers or an amplifier without a phono input. Then weigh how you want to operate the turntable and which features you will actually use.

  • Full setup cost: Add a phono preamp only if the turntable lacks one and your amplifier does not have a compatible phono input.
  • Drive and operation: Compare belt-drive and direct-drive designs, and check whether the model’s operation suits your preferences. These are distinct buying considerations, not a guarantee of sound quality.
  • Cartridge: Check what cartridge is included and whether it can be replaced or upgraded.
  • Connections: Decide whether you need USB for digitizing records or Bluetooth for wireless playback. Verify the exact model and SKU; similarly named variants can differ.
  • Setup and space: Account for the deck’s footprint and the extra wiring or components required by your system.

What Hi-Fi?’s buying guide discusses these factors, including drive type, phono stage, cartridge, Bluetooth, and USB: Best turntables.

Turntable models to investigate

The models below are useful starting points for comparing features, but the available source material does not establish that any one of them currently costs less than $500 in the US. Check the current price and exact SKU before treating a model as eligible.

Model What is established What to verify
Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB Audio-Technica’s official listing confirms the product: AT-LP120XUSB. Current US price, included phono stage, and the exact features of this USB model. Do not assume it is the same as the AT-LP120XBT-USB Bluetooth variant.
Fluance RT85 Popular Science named it its overall pick in a guide updated July 1, 2024. That is a dated editorial recommendation, not a current price check: Popular Science’s turntable guide. Current US price, included phono stage, cartridge details, and compatibility with your system.
Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo It appeared in Popular Science’s 2024 guide. What Hi-Fi? reported in 2026 that the original remained worth considering at a lower UK price and noted the newer Debut Evo 2. UK pricing does not establish US eligibility under $500: What Hi-Fi?’s turntable guide. Current US price for the exact model, whether it fits your total budget, and whether your setup has a suitable phono stage.
U-Turn Orbit Plus U-Turn’s official page establishes the product identity: Orbit Plus. Current US price, included features, and comparative performance; these are not established by the cited page material.

Do you need a separate phono preamp?

Only if the turntable has no built-in phono stage and your amplifier lacks a compatible phono input. A phono stage amplifies the cartridge’s signal so it can be used by an amplifier or powered-speaker input. If either the turntable or amplifier provides the required stage, you may not need to buy another component. Confirm the connection requirements for the exact deck and speakers or amplifier before adding a preamp to your budget. What Hi-Fi?’s buying guide and the cited phono-preamp guidance from Crutchfield cover this setup question: What Hi-Fi? and Crutchfield’s turntable buying guide.

How to check whether a model really fits the budget

  1. Find the current US price for the exact model and SKU, not a similarly named variant.
  2. Check the product specifications for a built-in phono stage.
  3. If the deck does not include one, check whether your amplifier has a compatible phono input. If neither component does, include a separate phono preamp in the total.
  4. Confirm the listed price and availability with the retailer before purchase; the cited editorial guides do not establish live 2026 US prices or stock.
  5. Compare remaining features—such as Bluetooth, USB, cartridge options, operation, and footprint—against your needs rather than assuming a higher price or an editorial award makes a model the best fit.

What the available recommendations can—and cannot—tell you

Popular Science’s guide was updated July 1, 2024, so its picks are historical editorial recommendations rather than proof of current prices or availability. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 discussion of the Pro-Ject model includes UK pricing context, which cannot establish its US price. The cited official pages identify products, but the material available here does not settle which candidates currently meet a $500 US ceiling. No first-hand comparative testing is claimed.
