Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is the closest fit for combat plus stealthy scouting; Phoenix Point and Jagged Alliance 3 offer more involved campaign management; and Gears Tactics, Invisible, Inc., and Tactical Breach Wizards take the tactics in more focused directions.
Which game should you play after XCOM?
These games share some of XCOM’s appeal, but they are not interchangeable clones. XCOM is known for combining demanding turn-based battles with threat management between missions and a roster of soldiers whose survival matters. The best next game depends on which of those elements you most want to preserve, a distinction also reflected in Wargamer’s September 27, 2024 guide to games like XCOM.
| If you want… | Try… | What changes from XCOM |
|---|---|---|
| Scouting and stealth before a tactical fight | Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden | Stealth and ambush setup are central, with exploration replacing XCOM’s familiar base-and-mission rhythm. |
| An alien war with a broad strategic layer | Phoenix Point | It adds global diplomacy, economy management, base building, and direct control over aim. |
| Mercenaries and campaign decisions across a country | Jagged Alliance 3 | Its conflict is grounded in mercenary operations, territory, and political choices rather than an alien invasion. |
| Squad battles with less between-mission management | Gears Tactics | It emphasizes the fights and pares back much of the downtime and decision-making between them. |
| Stealth missions with rising alarm pressure | Invisible, Inc. | Its focus is infiltration and operative risk, not a broad battlefield campaign. |
| Shorter, authored tactical puzzles | Tactical Breach Wizards | Its encounters are discrete room scenarios built around combining character abilities. |
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden: XCOM-style combat with stealth scouting
Choose Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden if you like planning an engagement before the first turn. Its official game page describes XCOM-inspired turn-based combat alongside exploration and real-time stealth. You can scout, approach enemies quietly, and set up an ambush instead of treating every encounter as a fight that begins once a mission map loads.
That makes it a strong fit for players who want tactical positioning but also enjoy deciding when and how to engage. The trade-off is that its exploration and stealth loop differs from XCOM’s base-and-mission campaign structure. The official page lists PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch; check the store for your region and current edition before buying.

Phoenix Point: a more involved alien-war strategy campaign
Phoenix Point is the pick if the strategic layer matters as much as the battles. Its Steam page describes an alien threat that adapts, base building, resource management, global diplomacy and economy management, and a free-aiming system that gives direct control over soldier aim. Steam Workshop support is also listed.
Those systems make it a broader, more involved alternative than a straightforward sequence of tactical missions. That complexity is a real trade-off: Wargamer’s 2024 guide describes the game as potentially fiddly and a less easy recommendation than some other XCOM alternatives. Pick it for strategic depth and experimentation, rather than simply expecting a smoother XCOM reskin.

Jagged Alliance 3: mercenary management and an open campaign
Choose Jagged Alliance 3 for a squad campaign built around mercenary personalities and operations across a country. The official site describes action-point-based turn combat, recruiting and developing mercenaries, controlling territory, training militia, and commanding multiple squads. It also notes online co-op.
The campaign extends beyond individual fights: decisions affect the fictional country, and you manage teams and territory as the operation unfolds. It is a grounded mercenary conflict, not an alien-invasion story, so the appeal is the combination of tactical combat and campaign choices rather than matching XCOM’s setting. PC Gamer also highlights its destructible combat environments in its strategy games coverage.

Gears Tactics: focus on squad fights, with less strategic downtime
Gears Tactics suits players who mainly want another round of cover-based squad combat. Wargamer’s guide notes familiar cover and overwatch tactics, while also distinguishing it from XCOM by its reduced between-battle management and decision-making.
That streamlined structure is its main advantage if you would rather spend more time in fights than managing a wider campaign. It is a weaker match if the base, roster, and strategic decisions between missions are the part of XCOM you value most.

Invisible, Inc.: stealth infiltration and escalating alarm pressure
Try Invisible, Inc. if you want turn-based tension built around avoiding detection instead of holding a battlefield. Missions focus on infiltration, objectives, and an alert level that escalates as the operation continues. GamesRadar’s February 18, 2025 list of XCOM alternatives also notes the risk of losing operatives.
The result is a different kind of pressure: you are balancing progress against exposure and the danger to your agents. Its emphasis on stealth makes it a useful alternative for XCOM players who enjoy careful planning, but it is not a substitute for a conventional campaign of squad battles.

Tactical Breach Wizards: compact encounters built as tactical puzzles
Tactical Breach Wizards is a good choice when you want carefully designed tactical problems rather than a sprawling strategy campaign. PC Gamer’s strategy games coverage describes discrete, room-based scenarios where the challenge is combining characters’ abilities to solve each fight.
Its authored puzzle structure gives each encounter a focused shape. Pick it for clever tactical combinations in compact scenarios; it is less suited to players looking for the persistent strategic campaign that defines the main XCOM comparison.
