The best tripod for live streaming depends on what you’re mounting. For a phone-first setup, the SmallRig Encore PT-20 is a purpose-built option with portrait and landscape positioning and a cold shoe for an accessory. For a camera stream with controlled pans and tilts, consider a camera-support tripod with a fluid head, such as the SmallRig AD-01. If you travel with a camera, the Manfrotto Befree Live Lever is a more portable option with a lower stated payload. These are setup-based recommendations, not a universal ranking or the result of independent hands-on testing.

How to choose a tripod for your stream
Start with the device and the shot
A phone holder makes phone-based framing straightforward, but check that it grips your phone’s width and lets you set the orientation you need. A camera rig needs a tripod and head designed for its combined weight. If you stream from a desk, confirm the support can frame you at seated eye level; for standing shots, check that the working height reaches the intended framing without an unstable setup.
For a mostly static phone stream, prioritize a secure holder, useful height, a stable footprint and orientation adjustment. If you plan to move a camera during a stream, look for a fluid video head with controllable pan and tilt drag. A ball head or simple phone stand is not the same as a fluid head designed for controlled video movement. Counterbalance can help when lenses or accessories change the camera’s weight distribution.

Calculate payload for the complete rig
Payload is the full load carried by the head, not just the camera body. Count the body, lens, microphone, light, transmitter, monitor, plates and any other equipment mounted above the head. SmallRig’s manufacturer guide recommends leaving roughly one-third to one-half headroom above that total. A setup that is too close to its rating can droop or show micro-bounce during a long take.
Check both the tripod’s stated capacity and the head’s own rating: they can differ. Do not assume that a tripod’s leg capacity establishes the head’s payload limit. For example, SmallRig’s 8 kg figure for the AD-01 is described as tripod load capacity in its 2025 guide; verify the specifications for the head and any configuration you buy.

Match height, footprint and portability to the room
Maximum height alone does not tell you how stable or suitable a tripod will be. SmallRig’s guide cautions that raising a center column can be less stable than reaching a similar height with the legs. Think about your actual placement—desk or floor, seated or standing—and how much room the legs need. The PT-20’s listed leg-spread diameter is 60 cm, a useful check for a tight setup.
If you carry your gear frequently, folded length and weight matter along with working height and payload. The Befree Live Lever is listed at 1.75 kg and 151 cm maximum height, with a 4 kg safety payload. Portability is useful only if the complete assembled camera rig remains within the applicable ratings.

Check mounting and accessories before ordering
- For a phone, confirm the holder’s supported width and whether it can frame in portrait, landscape or both.
- For an existing tripod, match the clamp’s base to the head or plate interface. The Phil clamp is described as having an Arca-Swiss-compatible base; confirm that your current head is compatible.
- Check whether a cold shoe or other accessory mount is positioned where a microphone, light or receiver can fit without blocking the phone or camera.
- Confirm what the listing includes. A listed feature or compatible interface does not by itself establish that every pictured accessory is included.

Choose the PT-20 for a phone-first setup
The PT-20 combines a smartphone holder, portrait/landscape framing, cold shoe and a 73–181 cm adjustment range. Its 60 cm leg spread may be a poor fit where floor space is limited, so measure the intended spot before buying.
Choose a fluid-head camera support for moving shots
The AD-01 is a guide example for a camera stream where controlled movement matters; SmallRig’s guide lists 85–186 cm working height and 8 kg tripod load capacity. The key buying check is whether the head and tripod can support your complete rig with headroom, not whether the body alone is under the stated figure.

Choose travel support only if its limits fit your rig
The Befree Live Lever pairs a sliding video plate and fluid pan/tilt drag with a 4 kg safety payload and 151 cm maximum height. Those limits make it important to weigh the full rig and compare the height with your planned framing.
Adapt an existing tripod when the clamp fits
A compatible phone clamp can be the more economical and less cluttered route if your current tripod is stable and reaches the right height. The Phil clamp guide lists 6.5–9 cm phone width and an Arca-Swiss-compatible base. Check both dimensions against your phone and tripod head before relying on it.
