None is a universal replacement: the right fit depends on service style, menu complexity, kitchen and table workflows, locations, payment terms, hardware, and support. Treat these names as a shortlist, then compare current written quotes and test each candidate against your restaurant’s actual day-to-day work.
Which Toast alternative should you consider?
A 2026 comparison lists five candidates, with broad positioning that can help narrow the field. These are screening cues from a secondary source, not independently tested rankings. Start with the row that resembles your operation, then verify the listed details directly with the provider.

Toast’s own pricing page says Toast Care is included with software subscriptions and is available 24/7/365. It also says charges apply for subsequent devices; its first-terminal offer and other terms depend on the applicable package. The page was updated August 20, 2026, so confirm that the live offer applies to your location and configuration. Check Toast’s current pricing terms.
Compare the complete cost, not just the monthly plan
A headline subscription figure does not capture the cost of running a restaurant POS. The reviewed vendor pages do not provide a complete, standardized quote for every provider, and the indicative figures in the 2026 comparison may reflect a particular date or configuration. - Software charges per location, terminal, and user, including required tiers.
- Card processing rates and per-transaction fees, with the payment types and channels covered.
- Hardware purchase or subscription costs, installation, replacement terms, and ownership.
- Paid add-ons, including kitchen display devices, online ordering, integrations, and reporting.
- Contract length, renewal terms, cancellation costs, and any equipment-return obligations.
- Support hours and whether help is included or separately priced.
- Migration, menu setup, staff training, and other switching costs.
Square’s official page describes kitchen-display ticket routing, layouts, order updates, timers, device syncing, and reports, while noting per-device app charges on applicable paid tiers. Confirm the current tier and device costs before comparing it with another system.
Test the workflows that matter to your restaurant
Before switching, run realistic scenarios in a demo or trial rather than relying on a feature checklist. TouchBistro’s 2023 guide observes that “no restaurant POS system is a one-size-fits-all solution”; that is a useful reminder, not an endorsement of one vendor.

- Dining room: Enter table-service orders, move or combine tables, split checks, apply discounts, and handle modifiers or coursing.
- Kitchen: Route items to the right stations and check how the POS handles kitchen display screens, ticket changes, delays, and order updates.
- Off-premises orders: Test online ordering and the delivery connections your restaurant actually uses.
- Connectivity: Ask exactly what keeps working during an internet outage, what data syncs later, and whether payments are affected. Do not assume “offline” means every function remains available.
- Management: Review reporting, inventory tools, permissions, and menu changes across locations if you operate more than one site.
- Staff and support: Have employees try common tasks, then contact support with a realistic issue to understand the available help and response path.
TouchBistro’s March 2023 guide discusses differences in POS platforms and workflows, but it should not be treated as proof of any provider’s current device support or offline behavior. Confirm those details with the vendor for the specific package you are considering.
Check hardware and payment terms before signing
Ask which company actually supplies payment processing, who owns the terminals and peripherals, and whether hardware can be reused or replaced if you leave. This is especially important when a Clover offer comes through a reseller: confirm the contracting party and the terms attached to that specific offer. For every candidate, get the contract, payment terms, and hardware list in writing before committing.

Do not buy a receipt printer or other POS accessory based only on a broad product category. The reviewed material does not establish a universally compatible printer model. Check the chosen provider’s current compatibility list for the exact model and connection type; Square and Toast both make clear that devices are part of the POS setup, but that does not establish cross-system compatibility.

- Describe your service model: Note whether you run counter service, a full-service dining room, takeout, multiple locations, or a mix.
- List must-work scenarios: Include table and split-check routines, modifiers, kitchen routing, online orders, reporting, and any location controls you rely on.
- Shortlist by fit: Use the comparison table as a starting point, not a ranking. Keep more than one candidate if your needs span categories.
- Request comparable quotes: Give each vendor the same terminal count, location count, payment mix, hardware needs, and support expectations.
- Run a workflow demonstration: Test your real menu and common edge cases with the people who will use the system.
- Review the written terms: Check processing, add-ons, support, contract length, cancellation, hardware ownership, and migration costs before signing.
A 2026 secondary comparison supplies the candidate list and broad operator positioning, but it does not establish one best system for every restaurant. The final choice should follow from your workflow tests and comparable current quotes, not a generalized ranking or an old plan price.

Do not use Toast’s dated failure-rate comparison as a buying metric
Toast’s competitor-comparison page cites a 30% restaurant failure rate attributed to a National Restaurant Association report from 2015, then compares that figure with a historical cohort of Toast customers still processing payments after 13 months. This is a dated vendor marketing comparison, not a current independent estimate of restaurant failure rates and not evidence that a POS system caused or prevented a restaurant’s survival.
