Choose a freelance time tracking app based on how you want to turn hours into client bills. Toggl Track is a fit if you want flexible time capture and invoice-ready reports; Harvest includes invoicing in its freelancer plan; Clockify describes invoice creation from billable tracked time. All three describe ways to capture time and organize it around client work, but features and plan limits differ.

What a freelance time tracking app should do

A useful workflow starts with a timer or manual entry, assigns the time to the right client and project (and task when available), and marks it billable or non-billable. Before billing, review the report for missing entries, incorrect assignments, and rate errors. The final step is either exporting a report to prepare an invoice elsewhere or creating the invoice in the same service.

These product capabilities are described by the vendors; they are not independent test results. Confirm that the current plan you select includes the features you need.

Toggl Track Vendor describes timer and manual entry, calendar syncing, and web, mobile, desktop, and browser-extension access. It also describes client/project rates, billable and non-billable time, and project estimates. Check the current plan matrix and pricing before choosing; plan limits and prices can change.

Clockify Vendor describes one-click timers and manual entry, client/project/task organization, billable rates, and browser, desktop, and mobile apps. Its invoicing page describes generating invoices from billable tracked time. It lists PDF, CSV, and Excel report exports. Features vary by plan, so check the current pricing matrix for the limits and functions you need.

How to choose based on your work

Choose Toggl Track if flexible capture and report exports are enough

Toggl Track’s described options span several devices, with manual entry and calendar syncing as alternatives to running a timer. Its billing pages describe rates and report exports intended to provide invoice-ready data. That makes it worth considering if you already prepare invoices in another tool and want a time report to support the amount billed. Confirm the export formats and plan access on Toggl’s freelancer page and billing page.

Set up a workflow that produces reliable bills

  1. Create a client and project structure. Use distinct projects for work you need to report or bill separately. Add tasks if you need more detail for client review.
  2. Choose how to capture time. Start a timer when work begins, or enter time manually when needed. Calendar syncing can help fill gaps where supported, but review entries rather than treating a calendar event as proof of billable work.
  3. Set rates and billing status. Assign applicable client, project, or task rates where available. Keep billable and non-billable work distinct so internal tasks do not inflate a client invoice.
  4. Review the period before billing. Check for forgotten sessions, duplicate or overlapping entries, wrong project assignments, and incorrect rates. Resolve these before you export a report or create an invoice.
  5. Choose the handoff. Export a readable report if you invoice elsewhere; use in-app invoice creation if you want the tracked billable time to feed the invoice workflow directly. Keep a copy of the report or invoice record for your own records.

Check limits before committing

Match plan limits to the shape of your freelance work: number of projects, users, report formats, integrations, devices, and invoicing requirements. Harvest’s listed freelancer free plan has a two-project limit, which may be restrictive if you track many active clients or engagements. Clockify’s feature availability varies by plan. Toggl’s pricing and feature details can change, so verify the current page before selecting a paid tier. A free plan is only useful if it supports the workflow you actually need.
