Apple Messages and Google Messages can handle ordinary phone-number messaging through SMS, MMS, and RCS. Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Messenger are internet services: in most cases, both people need an account on the same platform.
This is a 2025 retrospective, updated with an important 2026 change: Apple has begun rolling out end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging in beta on supported iPhones, carriers, and software versions. That rollout does not make every green-bubble conversation encrypted.

1. Apple Messages: best for iPhone users
Apple Messages is the easiest recommendation for households that primarily use iPhones, iPads, and Macs. iMessage conversations use blue bubbles and support features such as high-quality media, message replies, editing, unsending, scheduled messages, and polls.
Its security depends on the transport being used. Messages sent through iMessage are end-to-end encrypted. When the conversation falls back to SMS, MMS, or ordinary RCS, iMessage’s encryption does not apply. Those messages appear in green bubbles.

Green does not always mean SMS anymore. On current iPhones, green bubbles can also represent RCS. To enable RCS, open Settings → Apps → Messages → RCS Messaging and turn it on. RCS requires iOS 18 or later and a participating carrier and region.
Apple began rolling out end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging in beta in 2026 for supported carriers and compatible devices running iOS 26.5 or later. The setting is under Settings → Apps → Messages → RCS Messaging → End-to-End Encryption (Beta). Availability is limited and changing, so do not assume that every green-bubble chat is protected.
Choose Apple Messages if:
- Most of your contacts use Apple devices.
- You want messaging integrated with your phone, tablet, computer, and Apple Watch.
- You regularly send photos, videos, replies, edits, or scheduled messages.
2. Google Messages: best Android default
Google Messages is the most practical default for Android users who still need to text ordinary phone numbers. It combines SMS, MMS, and RCS in one app, so you do not need a separate service for contacts who use different phones.
Eligible one-to-one and group RCS conversations between Google Messages users are automatically end-to-end encrypted. That qualification matters: SMS and MMS are not encrypted, and an RCS chat may not be encrypted if someone uses another app or has RCS disabled.
To enable RCS, open Google Messages → profile photo or icon → Messages settings → RCS chats → Turn on RCS chats. On some versions, the menu is called Chat features. Availability depends on the phone, carrier, region, and SIM configuration.
To check a conversation, open it and select More → Details → Verify encryption. In a group, use More → Group details → select a participant → More → Verify encryption. An eligible encrypted conversation shows a lock on the send button and an “RCS chat with…” indicator.
When Google Messages falls back
Google Messages can switch between RCS, SMS, and MMS. If RCS is unavailable, the compose area may show a state such as Send by SMS or Send by MMS. That message will not have end-to-end encryption.
If the lock disappears, check that everyone is using Google Messages with RCS enabled, the apps and Carrier Services are updated, and the phone has a working Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. Changing phones or SIMs can also strand RCS messages. Google says RCS may continue working for up to 14 days after a SIM is removed; its RCS deactivation process can help reset the old registration before enabling it on the new phone.
3. Signal: best for privacy
Signal is the strongest general recommendation when privacy is more important than reaching every phone number. Signal messages and calls use end-to-end encryption by default. The app also supports usernames, disappearing messages, and linked desktop, iPad, and Android tablet devices.
Signal does not send ordinary SMS or MMS. The other person must use Signal for a Signal conversation, and both people need internet access. It can therefore be less convenient than Google Messages or Apple Messages for contacting businesses, relatives, or people who do not use the app.

You can contact someone without sharing your phone number in the initial discovery step by using a username. In Signal, select Compose → Find by Username, then enter the person’s exact username. A username is separate from the profile name shown in a conversation.
To connect a computer or tablet, open Signal → profile picture → Linked devices → Link a new device. Signal allows up to five linked devices per phone. The primary phone must connect at least once every 30 days, and linked devices are unlinked after 45 days of inactivity.

Signal’s phone-change limitation
Only one mobile phone can be registered to a Signal account at a time. Registering Signal on a second phone makes the previous mobile phone inactive. Linked computers and tablets are different: they can remain connected while the phone is the primary registered device.
4. WhatsApp: best for international contacts
WhatsApp is a practical choice when your contacts are spread across countries or when a large group already uses it. It supports text chats, group conversations, voice calls, video calls, and media sharing. Messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default.
WhatsApp is not an SMS replacement. Both participants generally need WhatsApp accounts, and messages require an internet connection. That distinction matters when you are trying to contact a new phone number, a business that only accepts texts, or someone who has poor data access.
Backups and account recovery deserve separate attention. Protecting the live conversation with end-to-end encryption does not automatically answer how a chat backup is stored or how you will regain access after losing a phone. Review WhatsApp’s backup and account-security settings instead of treating the app’s default encryption claim as a complete backup strategy.

Telegram is well suited to large communities, broadcast channels, file sharing, and people who want chats available across many devices. Its cloud synchronization makes ordinary conversations easy to access after signing in elsewhere.
However, Telegram’s normal cloud chats are not end-to-end encrypted. Telegram uses client-server encryption for those conversations. End-to-end encryption is available through Secret Chats, which are opt-in, one-to-one, tied to the devices where they were created, and not synchronized through Telegram Cloud. Secret Chats also do not support forwarding.
For sensitive conversations, start a Secret Chat rather than assuming a normal Telegram chat has the same protection as Signal or WhatsApp. Telegram’s two-step verification setting is under Settings → Privacy and Security → 2-Step Verification.
6. Messenger: best when your contacts already use Facebook
Messenger makes sense when your social and family contacts already live in Facebook or Messenger. Its end-to-end encrypted chats include features such as disappearing messages, secure storage, multi-device support, and methods for recovering chat history.

The recovery design is also Messenger’s biggest risk. On Messenger.com, open Profile photo → Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats → Message storage → Turn on secure storage. Depending on the account and platform, recovery may use a PIN, a 40-character code, an Apple account, a Google account, or a one-time code.
Do not reset secure storage casually. If the secure storage or its security method is deleted or reset, the encrypted chat history can be permanently deleted. Messenger cannot restore it. Save the chosen recovery method somewhere secure before changing phones or reinstalling the app.

- Use Apple Messages if nearly everyone you text uses Apple devices.
- Use Google Messages if you have Android and need reliable phone-number texting, including SMS and MMS fallback.
- Use Signal for private conversations where every participant is willing to install the same app.
- Use WhatsApp for international contacts and groups that already use WhatsApp.
- Use Telegram for channels, large communities, and cloud-synced file sharing—but use Secret Chats for sensitive one-to-one conversations.
- Use Messenger when your existing contacts are already there, after configuring secure storage and protecting its recovery method.
Important security facts before you choose
- SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted.
- Google Messages encryption applies only to eligible RCS chats, not every message in the app.
- Apple’s iMessage encryption does not cover SMS, MMS, or ordinary RCS fallback.
- Telegram’s normal chats are not end-to-end encrypted; Secret Chats are the exception.
- Disappearing messages cannot stop screenshots, copying, photographs, or recordings with another device.
- End-to-end encryption does not protect an account that has been taken over or an unlocked phone that someone else can access.
FAQ
What is the best text messaging app overall?
For iPhone households, Apple Messages is the most seamless choice. For Android users who text ordinary phone numbers, Google Messages is the best default. Signal is the better overall choice when privacy is the priority.
Are green-bubble messages on an iPhone encrypted?
Not necessarily. Green bubbles can be SMS, MMS, or RCS. SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted. Some supported iPhones, carriers, and software versions are beginning to receive end-to-end encrypted RCS in beta, but it is not universal.
Is Telegram end-to-end encrypted?
Only Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted. Ordinary Telegram cloud chats use client-server encryption and are synchronized through Telegram’s cloud.
Can Signal replace my phone’s SMS app?
No. Signal is an internet messaging service and does not send ordinary SMS or MMS. The recipient must use Signal for Signal messages.
The Bottom Line
There is no single best app for every kind of texting. Choose Apple Messages for an Apple-centric household, Google Messages for Android phone-number messaging, Signal for privacy, WhatsApp for international groups, Telegram for communities and channels, and Messenger for Facebook-based contacts. Always check the actual conversation type: SMS, MMS, and many RCS fallbacks are not end-to-end encrypted, regardless of which app displays them.
