For filing 2025 individual income taxes during the 2026 filing season, H&R Block is our top pick for its choice of online and desktop software and tools designed to help do-it-yourself filers find relevant forms, credits, and deductions. That is our editorial judgment, not a claim that H&R Block is best for every return: the right option depends on which forms you need, the full federal and state cost, your preferred workflow, and whether you want expert help.
The regular federal filing deadline was April 15, 2026. If you have not filed, need to amend a return, or are planning ahead for the next season, check the current IRS guidance and each product’s current terms before acting.
Why H&R Block is our top pick
H&R Block offers consumer tax-preparation software in online and desktop versions. The company describes its 2026-season tools as including AI Tax Assist and features intended to help filers locate forms, credits, and deductions. Those descriptions explain what the product offers; they do not independently establish its accuracy, savings, or ease of use. See H&R Block’s software options and its 2026-season announcement.
Our “highest marks” designation is an editorial recommendation, not the result of a comparative test established by the sources available here. The product facts support considering H&R Block, but they do not show that it is objectively superior for every filer. A ranking should be read alongside the criteria that matter for your return: supported forms, total cost, online versus desktop use, and the amount of human assistance included.

Could H&R Block’s free edition cover your return?
H&R Block describes its free online option as intended for simple tax situations. It supports Form 1040 and selected schedules and forms, but the company lists itemized deductions, self-employment income, and other complex situations among the exclusions. Review its free-edition eligibility and supported forms against your actual tax documents before entering information. If your return requires a feature outside the free tier, confirm the upgrade price before filing.
“Free” is useful only if the edition supports the return you need to submit. A return involving income or deductions beyond the listed scope may require a paid product or another filing route. Do not choose software based on a headline free offer alone.
Rank #2

How H&R Block compares with TurboTax and TaxAct
TurboTax and TaxAct are alternatives worth checking, but the available descriptions do not establish comparable all-in prices for every type of return. Prices, included state filing, and offers can change, so compare the product details for your tax situation rather than assuming one brand is always cheaper.
| Option | What the available information establishes | What to verify before filing |
|---|---|---|
| H&R Block | Consumer software is available online and on desktop. The free online edition covers Form 1040 and selected schedules and forms, with stated exclusions for itemized deductions, self-employment income, and other complex situations. H&R Block software; free-edition details. | Whether your forms are supported, the total federal and state cost, and the price of any required upgrade. |
| TurboTax | Its free edition is described as limited to simple Form 1040 returns, subject to specified exceptions. TurboTax free-edition information. | Whether your return meets its current eligibility rules and what federal and state filing will cost if it does not. |
| TaxAct | Its site describes online products and identifies a comparison basis dated April 1, 2026. It also describes a flat-price offer for eligible consumer-prepared returns filed by October 15, 2026. TaxAct product and offer details. | Whether the offer still applies to your return and filing date, what it includes, and the total cost for federal and state filing. |
For broader context, TechRadar’s 2026 guide discusses H&R Block options and support features, while Kiplinger’s 2026 readers’ choice report summarizes reader feedback. Reader feedback is not controlled product testing, and neither source establishes that one program is best for every filer.

Rank #3
- TurboTax Desktop Edition is download software which you install on your computer for use
- Requires Windows 11 or macOS Sonoma or later (Windows 10 not supported)
- Recommended if you are self-employed, an independent contractor, freelancer, small business owner, sole proprietor, or consultant
- Includes 5 Federal e-files and 1 State via download. State e-file sold separately. Get U.S.-based technical support (hours may vary)
- Live Tax Advice: Connect with a tax expert and get one-on-one advice and answers as you prepare your return (fee applies)
Use these comparison checks
- Forms and return complexity: Match your income, deductions, and other tax circumstances to the product’s supported forms and eligibility rules.
- Total cost: Check federal preparation, state preparation, and any upgrade or assistance charges together. A free federal tier does not by itself establish that your complete filing will cost nothing.
- Workflow: Decide whether you want an online account or desktop software, and check the product’s current import and data-entry options if those matter to you.
- Help: Compare what human or expert assistance is actually included, what costs extra, and how you can access it.
Check IRS Free File before paying
IRS Free File is a separate guided-software option for eligible taxpayers. For the 2026 filing season, the Internal Revenue Service said eight private-sector partners offered guided software to taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less. That is the IRS-published threshold for that season; it does not establish that H&R Block was one of the partners. Check the IRS Free File information for the program and its participating providers before choosing paid software.
What to do if you still have not filed
The IRS gave April 15, 2026 as the regular deadline for filing 2025 federal individual income tax returns. That date has passed. If you still need to file, use current IRS instructions for late returns and any payment due; do not assume that a software product changes your filing obligations. If you need to amend a return you already filed, confirm the IRS’s current amendment process and choose software that supports the forms and amendment workflow you need. The IRS filing-deadline guidance is the relevant starting point.

Our recommendation in brief
H&R Block earns our highest marks as a broadly useful option because it offers online and desktop software and describes tools to guide DIY filers. Before committing, check that your return fits the edition you plan to use and calculate the full federal and state price. If your return is simple, compare the free-tier rules of multiple providers; if your 2025 adjusted gross income was within the IRS Free File threshold for the 2026 season, check that program’s provider list as well.
