An external adaptive switch or keyboard may offer an alternative to touchscreen input; a conductive stylus is a narrower option for some iPad users who cannot make direct skin contact. For visual access, built-in magnification, screen reading, and display controls may help without buying hardware. Check the tablet model, operating system, connection options, and school requirements before choosing anything.
Start with the student’s access method, not a product list
There is no single best tablet accessory for every student with a motor or visual disability. A diagnosis alone does not establish which movements, touches, visual information, or alternate inputs will work for an individual. First identify the access method the student can use comfortably, then check whether the tablet supports it and whether it fits the school’s setup.
The options below are categories, not rankings of specific products. Official platform documentation describes features and setup, but does not establish that a particular accessory will suit a particular student or improve educational outcomes.
Accessory options for motor access
External adaptive switch
A switch can let a student select screen items without relying on ordinary touchscreen gestures. Android’s Switch Access feature scans and highlights items that the user can select with one or more switches. Google documents external switches connected by USB or Bluetooth; setup and behavior depend on the device and configuration. See Google’s overview of Switch Access and Android Switch Access setup instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Google names AbleNet, Enabling Devices, RJ Cooper, and Tecla as companies that sell switches, while noting that Google does not endorse them or their products. Treat those names as examples, not recommendations. Before buying a switch, confirm that its connection and operation are supported by the student’s tablet and that its activation method is usable for them.
External keyboard
A standard USB or Bluetooth keyboard can be configured as an input for Android Switch Access. Apple also lists external keyboards among the mobility inputs available on iPad. A keyboard may be worth considering when a student can use keys more reliably than direct touch, but connection support and behavior can vary. Google’s Switch Access setup guide and Apple’s iPad mobility accessibility overview describe platform options.

Conductive stylus
Apple’s accessibility conformance document for the iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation) identifies an Apple Pencil or conductive stylus as an option for some users whose motor skills or other disabilities prevent direct skin contact with the screen. This is a device-specific, limited example—not evidence that a stylus will help with low vision, work across tablet brands, or suit every user. Check the exact tablet and stylus requirements before considering one: Apple’s iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation) accessibility conformance document.
For visual access, try built-in features first
A hardware purchase may not be necessary to explore common visual-access needs. Android documents screen magnification, including full-screen and partial-screen modes, zoom and panning controls, and external-keyboard shortcuts. Available controls can depend on the Android version. Google’s screen magnification instructions explain the options.

A practical way to choose
- Identify the access task. Is the student trying to select screen items without touch, type with keys, make screen contact without skin contact, enlarge content, or hear on-screen text?
- Explore built-in settings. Review the tablet’s accessibility options for the relevant task before purchasing hardware. Feature names and availability vary by platform and software version.
- Match the input to the student. Consider the movements or actions the student can use comfortably; do not infer fit from a diagnosis alone.
- Confirm device and connection support. Check the specific tablet model and operating system, then verify USB, Bluetooth, or stylus compatibility as applicable.
- Check with the school. Confirm procurement, device-management, and classroom setup requirements before ordering an accessory.
