A super-automatic espresso machine does nearly everything for you: it grinds whole beans, doses them, brews the drink, and—on the right model—froths milk automatically. That convenience comes with trade-offs. You get less control than with a portafilter machine, and every automatic rinse, milk cycle, and wet grounds container adds maintenance.

For 2026, the De’Longhi Rivelia is the best fit for most households because it combines reliable milk drinks, useful bean switching, and a clear touchscreen. The KitchenAid KF8 is the stronger premium choice if you want to customize drink strength, temperature, milk volume, and dispensing order. The Philips LatteGo 5500 is easier to clean, while the Jura E8 is best suited to buyers who prioritize black coffee and premium build quality.

These recommendations are based on reported hands-on testing, manufacturer documentation, and comparisons of drink quality, temperature, consistency, noise, milk performance, cleaning, and day-to-day usability. Pump pressure is not used as a ranking shortcut.

Our top picks

De’Longhi Rivelia Most people Two bean hoppers, strong automatic milk drinks, profiles, touchscreen Beans remain around the grinder when switching hoppers

KitchenAid KF3 Compact midrange setup Four profiles, automatic milk, relatively narrow body Iced espresso tested lukewarm; milk needs a separate container
Jura E8 Premium black coffee Good grinder, large 64-ounce tank, consistent espresso-style drinks Expensive, and milk carafe and Wi-Fi dongle cost extra
De’Longhi Eletta Explore Hot and cold specialty drinks Hot foam, cold foam, and cold-extraction features More specialized and usually pricier than the Rivelia

The Rivelia is the easiest recommendation for a mixed household. Its two removable bean hoppers let you keep different beans available—use a darker roast for espresso and a milder one for longer drinks without emptying the entire hopper. It also offers a 3.5-inch color touchscreen, up to four user profiles, automatic LatteCrema Hot milk frothing, and more than 18 preset recipes.

Hands-on reviews have been particularly positive about the Rivelia’s milk drinks. It produces repeatable cappuccinos and lattes without asking the user to learn manual steaming, while the touchscreen makes profile and recipe selection straightforward. De’Longhi’s Bean Adapt feature can remember settings for up to six different beans.

Important limitation: bean switching is not lossless

Changing hoppers does not remove every bean from the grinding path. De’Longhi says beans can remain in the area below the hopper, so you must brew a drink or grind the remaining beans away before the new roast fully takes over. That is still more convenient than manually emptying one large hopper, but it is not an instant, zero-waste switch.

To use Bean Adapt, tap the Bean Adapt icon on the home screen and follow the on-screen procedure. If you adjust the grinder yourself, move it only one notch at a time while the grinder is operating. The effect may not appear until several drinks later.

Buy it if: your household drinks both black and milk-based coffee, or you regularly alternate between bean types.

Skip it if: you want complete control over dose and extraction, or you expect the hopper system to change beans without any leftover coffee.

2. KitchenAid KF8: best premium machine for customization

The KF8 is the pick for users who want automatic preparation without surrendering every meaningful setting. It allows you to change drink strength, temperature, espresso volume, milk volume, and the order in which coffee and milk are dispensed. That makes it more adaptable than machines that offer many named recipes but little control over what is actually in the cup.

Good Housekeeping currently names the KF8 its best overall automatic espresso machine, emphasizing the range of adjustments and the quality of the resulting drinks. It is particularly attractive for households where one person wants a strong, short espresso and another prefers a larger, milkier drink.

The maintenance cost of convenience

The KF8 rinses automatically at startup and shutdown. That is useful for keeping the brewing path clean, but the water ends up in the drip tray. The grounds container also needs frequent emptying; leaving wet grounds in place for too long can encourage mold. In other words, the KF8 reduces brewing work, not maintenance work.

Buy it if: you care about adjusting recipes precisely and are willing to empty trays and grounds regularly.

Skip it if: you want the simplest possible cleaning routine or mainly drink uncomplicated espresso.

3. Philips LatteGo 5500: easiest to clean

The Philips LatteGo 5500 is built around a very simple milk system. Its LatteGo components have no narrow milk hose to scrub, and the milk parts are designed for quick cleaning and dishwasher use according to Philips’ product information. It also includes 20 listed coffee recipes, QuickStart heating, and support for AquaClean filters.

This is the machine to consider when cleaning friction is more important than achieving the hottest or most concentrated espresso. Good Housekeeping has repeatedly praised Philips LatteGo systems for straightforward milk maintenance, but its testing also found Philips machines could produce espresso that was less hot or less strong than some competitors.

Read the AquaClean claim carefully

Philips’ “no descaling up to 5,000 cups” statement applies under specific AquaClean filter conditions. It is not a universal promise that every owner can make 5,000 drinks without descaling. Drink selection, rinsing, cleaning frequency, water hardness, and filter replacement all affect the actual interval.

Buy it if: you want automatic milk drinks but dislike dismantling complicated milk tubing.

Skip it if: you prefer very hot, punchy espresso or do not want to track filters and water hardness.

4. KitchenAid KF3: best compact midrange option

The KF3 measures approximately 14.2 × 7.7 × 18.5 inches and has a 1.8-liter water tank, automatic milk preparation, and four user profiles. Its narrow 7.7-inch width is useful on crowded counters, although the tall body still requires enough overhead clearance to access the hopper and other removable parts.

It launched in the U.S. and U.K. in April 2026 with a listed U.S. price of $999.99. The KF2 was listed at $799.99 and the KF4 at $1,299.99 in the same comparison, but prices can change.

The KF3’s measured noise was about 72 dB while grinding and 60 dB while brewing. That is not especially quiet for an open-plan kitchen or an early-morning bedroom-adjacent counter. Startup and shutdown rinses also consume water quickly; the 1.8-liter tank still required regular refilling in testing.

Do not buy it for iced coffee without checking the recipe

A major weakness is its iced-espresso performance. Testing measured both a regular medium-temperature shot and an iced-espresso shot at approximately 40°C / 104°F. Dispensed over ice, that melts ice quickly and produces a diluted, lukewarm drink. The KF3 can still be a sensible machine for hot espresso and milk drinks, but its iced-drink label should not be treated as proof of cold extraction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The KF3 also requires the milk hose to sit in a separate milk container. The KF4 includes a dedicated milk carafe, so the KF3 is not the better choice if you want the neatest all-in-one milk setup.

Buy it if: counter width matters and your usual drinks are hot espresso, cappuccino, or latte.

Skip it if: iced coffee is a major reason you are buying an automatic machine.

5. Jura E8: best premium choice for black coffee

The Jura E8 is a polished, expensive option with a conical-burr grinder, 64-ounce water tank, and thermoblock heating system. Its strength is straightforward black coffee and espresso-style drinks rather than an expansive included milk setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The U.S. price was listed at about $2,699 in the reviewed configuration. That price is harder to justify if you regularly make lattes: the E8 does not include a milk carafe, and the compatible carafe and J.O.E. Wi-Fi dongle are sold separately. The dongle was listed at $70 and the carafe at $90 during testing.

Rinsing also affects real-world capacity. Tom’s Guide reported emptying the drip tray about every four drinks and refilling the tank about every eight drinks. Those are test observations, not guaranteed capacities, but they illustrate why a large tank does not mean weeks of hands-off operation.

Specialty alternative: De’Longhi Eletta Explore

The Eletta Explore deserves attention if hot and cold specialty drinks matter more than having the most compact or economical machine. De’Longhi gives it both hot-foam and cold-foam technology, along with Cold Extraction Technology. That makes it a more relevant alternative to machines whose “iced” recipe simply dispenses warm espresso over ice.

It is a specialist choice rather than the default recommendation. If most of your drinks are cappuccinos and regular coffee, the Rivelia generally offers a simpler reason to buy. If you frequently make cold foam or cold-extraction beverages, the Eletta Explore’s additional hardware may be worthwhile.

How we compare super-automatic machines

A fair comparison requires more than counting recipes or comparing pump ratings. The useful tests are:

  1. Setup: record setup time, initial rinse volume, water-hardness prompts, filter requirements, hopper access, and clearance needed to remove tanks and brew components.
  2. Espresso: pull at least three identical shots, recording brew time, beverage mass or volume, temperature, crema, and consistency. Repeat after a controlled grinder adjustment.
  3. Milk drinks: make cappuccinos, lattes, and flat whites with whole milk and a plant-based milk. Check temperature, foam texture, separation, splashing, and cleaning steps.
  4. Long drinks: test coffee, long coffee, and Americano separately. A “coffee” button may make an espresso-style drink topped up with water rather than drip-style coffee.
  5. Iced drinks: use a fixed ice weight and glass size, then measure temperature before and after dispensing. Cold foam, iced espresso, and cold extraction are not interchangeable.
  6. Ownership: time startup, brewing, shutdown, and cleaning; count tray and grounds emptying; and verify dishwasher claims against the current manual.

What to know before buying

Automatic does not mean maintenance-free

Every machine here needs some combination of water refilling, drip-tray emptying, grounds disposal, milk-system rinsing, cleaning tablets, and descaling or filter replacement. Startup and shutdown rinses can fill the tray surprisingly quickly. That is normal behavior, not automatically evidence of a leak.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recipe counts can be misleading

A menu with 20 drinks may contain several variations of espresso, hot water, milk, and foam. Look for distinct capabilities—espresso, lungo-style coffee, Americano, automatic milk, cold foam, or cold extraction—rather than assuming every menu label represents a new brewing method.

Measure counter clearance, not just footprint

A machine can fit between two appliances and still be unusable under a cabinet. Top-loading hoppers need vertical room, while rear-mounted tanks may require pulling the machine forward before refilling. Check where the grounds drawer and drip tray slide out as well.

Do not compare pump-bar numbers

Manufacturers commonly advertise 15, 19, or similar pump ratings. Those figures are not a reliable quality ranking. Temperature stability, grind consistency, recipe volume, extraction taste, milk texture, and cleanup matter much more in daily use.

FAQ

What is the best super-automatic espresso machine in 2026?

The De’Longhi Rivelia is the best all-around choice for most households. It combines consistent automatic milk drinks with a touchscreen, user profiles, and two removable bean hoppers. The KitchenAid KF8 is better if detailed drink customization matters more than simplicity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are super-automatic espresso machines worth it?

They are worth considering if convenience and repeatability matter more than barista-level control. They grind, dose, brew, and often froth milk automatically, but they cannot match a semi-automatic machine for manual control over dose, tamping, yield, and extraction.

Which automatic espresso machine is easiest to clean?

The Philips LatteGo 5500 is among the easiest because its milk components are designed for quick cleaning and dishwasher use. It still needs routine rinsing, tray emptying, grounds disposal, and filter or descaling maintenance.

Do automatic espresso machines make real iced coffee?

Not necessarily. Some machines dispense warm espresso over ice, which can melt the ice and dilute the drink. The KitchenAid KF3, for example, produced an iced-espresso test at about 40°C / 104°F. Look specifically for cold extraction or cold-foam hardware if cold drinks are important.

The Bottom Line

Buy the De’Longhi Rivelia for the best balance of drink quality, milk automation, profiles, and bean flexibility. Choose the KitchenAid KF8 for maximum recipe control, the Philips LatteGo 5500 for easier milk cleaning, the KitchenAid KF3 for a narrow counter, and the Jura E8 if premium black coffee matters more than included milk accessories or price. Whichever model you choose, leave room in your routine for rinsing, tray emptying, grounds disposal, and milk cleaning.
