For a practical starting point, set Streamlabs Desktop to a native-resolution base canvas, 1280×720 output, and 30 fps. Choose a bitrate that fits both your streaming platform’s guidance and your stable upload capacity, then test the actual stream before going live. There is no single best preset: the right settings depend on your PC, content, connection, and destination.
Start with a balanced Streamlabs setup
Streamlabs Support recommends 720p at 30 fps as a performance-oriented starting point and advises leaving the base canvas at your monitor’s native resolution. That lets you keep a full-resolution production canvas while sending a smaller, less demanding output to viewers. Streamlabs’ getting-started guide explains this recommendation.
- Open Settings > Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to your monitor’s native resolution. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720 as a starting point.
- In the same Video settings, choose 30 FPS for slower content or when prioritizing performance. Try 60 fps for fast gameplay only if your PC and connection can sustain it.
- Open Settings > Output. Choose a video bitrate for your destination platform and resolution, and select an encoder your CPU or GPU can sustain while the game or other content is running.
- Check that your intended microphone and desktop audio devices are selected. Watch the mixer meters while speaking and playing audio.
- Run a test stream with representative motion and sound. Check the stream itself and its health indicators, not just the local preview.
Streamlabs labels can change between software releases. If a setting has moved, use the current interface’s Video and Output sections as a guide.
What each setting changes
| Setting | What it controls | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Base (Canvas) Resolution | The resolution of your production canvas. | Start with your monitor or source content’s native resolution. |
| Output (Scaled) Resolution | The resolution encoded and sent to viewers. | 720p is a sensible performance baseline. Higher output resolutions increase encoding demands; Streamlabs notes 1080p has twice as many pixels as 720p and can have a significant CPU impact. |
| FPS | How many frames are sent each second. | Use 30 fps for slower content or a performance-first setup. Consider 60 fps for fast action if your hardware and bandwidth can handle it. |
| Video bitrate | How much video data is sent per second. | Follow the destination’s guidance and leave stable upload capacity to spare. A bitrate above what your connection can sustain may cause lag, buffering, or dropped frames. |
| Encoder | Whether the CPU or GPU builds the encoded video. | Pick the option your system can sustain under real streaming load; neither hardware nor software encoding is best for every PC. |
| Dynamic Bitrate | Adjusts bitrate in response to network conditions. | Streamlabs says this can help when network variation causes dropped frames. It does not fix an overloaded CPU or GPU. |
The general tradeoff is straightforward: higher resolution and frame rate can improve detail or motion, but they demand more from the encoder and usually require more bandwidth. Change one setting at a time and compare the result in a test stream.

Choose bitrate for the destination—not a universal preset
Bitrate examples are platform- and configuration-specific. Streamlabs’ July 2026 guide gives the following Twitch-oriented NVIDIA NVENC examples. They use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, the Quality preset, and two B-frames; they are not universal settings for every platform or encoder.
| Output | Streamlabs example video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 3,000 kbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 4,500 kbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 4,500 kbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 6,000 kbps |
Those figures come from Streamlabs’ getting-started guide. Its separate bitrate guidance also cautions that a connection unable to sustain the chosen rate can lead to lag, buffering, and dropped frames. Start conservatively, then raise quality only after monitoring performance.
If you stream to YouTube
YouTube’s current live-encoder table gives H.264 ingestion targets of 8 Mbps for 720p30, 8 Mbps for 720p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations specifically for H.264; YouTube lists different recommendations for other codecs, so do not apply the H.264 column to AV1 or H.265. Adjust settings by content and PC capacity
For a performance-first or low-motion stream
Keep the native base canvas, use 720p output and 30 fps, then check whether the stream is stable and clear enough for its content. Talking, music, and other slower scenes may not benefit as much from 60 fps as fast gameplay does.
For fast gameplay
Try 60 fps only after confirming that the game, encoder, and connection can handle the added load. On a single-PC setup, the game and encoder compete for CPU and GPU resources. If the game stutters or the encoder struggles, reduce output resolution or FPS, cap the game’s frame rate at a sustainable level, or lower demanding in-game graphics settings. Streamlabs discusses this resource competition in its game optimization guidance.

For a higher-resolution stream
Move above 720p only when your platform, upload connection, and system can support the higher output. A higher bitrate cannot compensate for an overloaded encoder, and a stronger PC cannot compensate for an unstable upload connection. Test the complete setup at the resolution and frame rate you plan to use.
Troubleshoot dropped frames, stuttering, and buffering
First identify whether the problem is network-related or caused by rendering and encoding load. These failures can look similar to viewers but call for different fixes.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames when the connection fluctuates | Upload instability or bitrate beyond sustainable capacity. | Check upload stability and lower the bitrate. Streamlabs’ Dynamic Bitrate option can adapt to network changes, but monitor whether the stream stabilizes. |
| Game stutters or encoder/render lag appears | CPU or GPU resource competition between the game and stream. | Reduce output resolution or FPS, cap the game’s frame rate, or lower demanding game graphics settings. Change one item at a time. |
| Viewers report buffering | The stream bitrate or output may be too demanding for the connection or the viewing conditions. | Try a lower output resolution or bitrate. Consider whether your platform offers viewers transcoded quality options. Do not increase bitrate solely because the local preview looks soft. |
| Microphone or desktop sound is missing | The wrong device may be selected, or the source may not be reaching the mixer. | Confirm the intended microphone and desktop audio devices in Streamlabs, watch their mixer meters, and test privately or unlisted where possible. |
| One destination works, another does not | Platforms may have different bitrate, codec, or keyframe rules. | Check each platform’s current ingest guidance. For a multistream setup, Streamlabs advises staying at or below the lowest destination’s bitrate maximum. |
Streamlabs’ troubleshooting context for network-related bitrate and game-resource issues is in its bitrate guide and game optimization guide. YouTube’s advice to test before going live appears in its encoder settings guidance.

Test the finished setup before going live
- Preview the scene and confirm the intended capture sources are visible.
- Speak and play desktop audio; confirm both mixer meters respond and the test stream contains the sound.
- Use motion similar to your real stream, particularly if you are choosing between 30 and 60 fps.
- Check stream health on the destination platform while the test is running.
- If you change bitrate, output resolution, FPS, or encoder, test again before relying on the new configuration.
YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” The local preview alone cannot establish how the uploaded stream is performing.
