OBS Studio is a flexible free alternative if you are willing to add EQ through a compatible plugin; Streamlabs Desktop documents useful audio filters, but its reviewed materials do not establish a built-in multiband EQ. For browser-based interviews, StreamYard prioritizes guest-friendly controls over detailed EQ.
The distinction matters: a mixer balances the levels of sources such as a microphone, game audio, guests, and music. An equalizer shapes frequency ranges within a source. A mixer does not necessarily include an EQ.
Which streaming software has both a mixer and an equalizer?
XSplit Broadcaster is the strongest documented match for both features built into the application. Its Audio Mixer lets you monitor and adjust devices individually, while its Parametric Equalizer provides Low, Mid, and High bands with selectable frequency centers, gain controls, and quality-factor presets.
OBS Studio offers per-source audio controls and supports VST plugins, so an EQ can be added with a compatible plugin. Streamlabs Desktop documents filters for noise and dynamics, but the reviewed documentation does not describe a native multiband EQ. StreamYard suits browser-based shows where straightforward guest audio controls matter more than detailed EQ.

What the audio controls actually do
Mixer: balance the sources
A mixer controls the relative level of inputs. For a stream with a microphone, game or desktop sound, and music, separate level controls let you adjust one source without changing the others. In XSplit, open Tools > Audio Mixer to monitor and adjust devices, add playback or recording devices, change levels, and mute them. Its meter is measured in dBFS; levels approaching 0 dBFS warn that audio may clip.

In OBS, begin with the device, operating-system, and application volume controls before making large changes with an OBS fader. The OBS audio guide recommends recording a normal session and listening back before going live. Physical mixers can provide source gain and a master level before sound reaches the computer, but they are optional rather than a prerequisite for software mixing.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEqualizer: shape the tone
An EQ changes the level of selected frequency ranges. It can help adjust a source’s tone, but it is not a substitute for setting a sensible input level or reducing noise at its source. XSplit documents Low, Mid, and High EQ bands and lets users select frequency centers, adjust gain, and choose quality-factor presets.
OBS supports VST plugins, which can add an EQ to a suitable source or audio path. Check the plugin’s compatibility with your operating system and OBS version, and confirm that it is applied to the intended source. The reviewed OBS feature material documents plugin support, not a built-in parametric EQ.

Noise and dynamics filters are not EQ
Noise suppression, gates, compressors, limiters, and expanders address different problems from frequency shaping. Suppression targets unwanted background sound; a gate reduces or closes a signal below a threshold; compression controls level changes; a limiter restricts peaks. These can be useful, but their presence does not mean an app has an equalizer.
How to choose for your setup
- Choose XSplit Broadcaster if native EQ alongside per-device mixing is the deciding requirement. Check the current app version and feature availability, particularly if you depend on VST3 plugins, which XSplit documents for Broadcaster V4.2 or newer.
- Choose OBS Studio if free, open-source, cross-platform software and plugin flexibility matter more than having EQ built into the native mixer. Confirm that your chosen plugin and routing work with your setup.
- Choose Streamlabs Desktop if its documented filters for common noise and dynamics needs fit your workflow. Do not count those filters as an EQ unless current product documentation confirms one.
- Choose StreamYard if browser-based guest access and simpler microphone controls are more important than in-app multiband EQ. For detailed EQ, its vendor suggests processing audio upstream with hardware or virtual mixer software.
These distinctions are based on the reviewed vendor documentation. Product versions and plans can change, so confirm the current feature set and operating-system compatibility before committing to a workflow.
Set up and check your stream audio
- Set source levels first. Check the microphone, operating system, and application volume controls. Then balance the microphone against game, desktop, guest, and music sources in the streaming app’s mixer.
- Keep monitoring while you adjust. Use headphones to hear the mix as a viewer would. In XSplit, watch the dBFS meter and avoid levels that approach clipping.
- Apply only the processing you need. Use an EQ for tonal adjustments and the relevant noise or dynamics filter for its specific problem. In OBS, verify the plugin is compatible and attached to the intended source.
- Record a normal session and listen back. OBS recommends a test recording before a live broadcast. Streamlabs also recommends testing with a short clip or private stream, monitoring through headphones, and reviewing the result.
- Check the destination’s current requirements. Audio bitrate and other platform requirements can change; use the destination’s current guidance for your account and stream rather than relying on an old preset or third-party summary.
Troubleshooting common audio problems
The microphone clips or sounds distorted
Reduce the microphone or application input level first, then check the streaming software’s fader and meters. If the signal is already distorted before it reaches the mixer, lowering the final output will not undo that distortion; reduce the source gain and make another recording.

Background noise remains audible
First check microphone placement and the noise in the room, then adjust source level. Try noise suppression or a gate where appropriate, but listen for unwanted cuts to quiet words and sounds. A gate does not remove noise while the signal is open.
One source overwhelms the others
Lower that source in the mixer rather than raising every other input. Check the device, operating-system, and app volume controls as well as the streaming-software fader; multiple gain stages can affect the result.
EQ is missing or has no effect
Confirm whether the app offers native EQ or requires a plugin. For OBS, check plugin compatibility, routing, and the source to which the filter is applied. For XSplit, check that you are using the EQ control on the intended device and that your current version supports the feature you need.

Audio sounds different in the recording or on stream
Monitor the intended source path, record a representative test, and review the recording or VOD through headphones. Verify that the correct devices are selected and that you have not changed levels in an upstream app, operating system, or interface since the test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a hardware mixer or audio interface?
Not necessarily. Desktop software can mix multiple sources, and some software can process audio with built-in controls or plugins. A hardware mixer or interface is most useful when you need physical level controls, a dedicated routing path, or gain adjustment before audio reaches the computer. Try balancing sources and recording a test before buying hardware; the software feature documentation does not establish that a particular piece of equipment is required.
Software cost and plan details
OBS Studio is described by the OBS Project as free and open source. Streamlabs says Desktop is free to download and use, while noting that some features vary with Ultra. XSplit’s product page lists a free tier limited to streaming up to 720p without a watermark, as well as monthly, yearly, and lifetime paid options. The prices displayed on the reviewed XSplit page were $14.99 monthly, $59.99 yearly, and $199.99 lifetime; these are volatile US-page values, not guaranteed prices for every region or billing offer. Check the vendors’ current pages for your location and plan terms.
When the goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream
Audio mixer and EQ features solve production and sound-shaping needs; they do not by themselves keep a stream running when your computer is off. For uploaded videos that should loop on YouTube, StreamNeo is the cloud option: it keeps the channel live from uploaded videos, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is not a camera-streaming service and streams to YouTube only.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers. It includes 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, support from the StreamNeo team, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
