There is no single best STEM education platform for every learner. For ages 2–8, Khan Academy Kids offers free early-learning activities; Brilliant focuses on interactive math and STEM problem solving; Tynker teaches coding through creative projects and sequenced courses; and Code.org provides free, structured K–12 computer science and AI curricula. Choose by age, subject, learning style, classroom needs, and device access—not by treating these different services as a tested ranking.
How to choose a STEM learning platform
Start with what the learner needs to do. A young child building early math foundations needs a different experience from a student practicing math problems, making a game, or following a teacher-led computer science course.
- Age or grade: Khan Academy Kids specifies ages 2–8. Code.org and Tynker offer grade-banded pathways; Tynker’s family page lists pathways for ages 7–12 and 13+.
- Learning mode: Options include video and article instruction, interactive problem solving, creative coding projects, and structured courses that teachers can assign.
- Subject: The choices range from early literacy and math to deeper math practice, coding, computer science, and AI.
- Setting: For independent or family use, look at the learner-facing activities and plan limits. For a classroom, check whether teachers can assign work, assess progress, and access reporting or professional learning.
- Cost and equipment: Check which access is free, what requires a paid plan or school offering, and whether a course needs a computer or physical hardware.
The platforms below serve different purposes. Their official pages describe features and access, but do not establish that one produces better learning outcomes than another.
Best STEM platforms by learner and use
Khan Academy Kids: best fit for early learners ages 2–8
Khan Academy Kids is an app for children ages 2–8, with games, books, and lessons in early literacy, math, and social-emotional skills.
