If you want to stream PC VR games to a standalone headset, the best-documented alternatives to Steam Link are Virtual Desktop and ALVR. Virtual Desktop is a paid app with broad headset support and a graphical setup; ALVR is open source and supports Windows and Linux hosts, but asks you to configure more of the PC, encoder, and network setup. Neither is a proven performance winner: choose by headset, PC, game compatibility, and setup preference.
What a PC VR streaming alternative does
These apps do not make the headset render a PC game on its own. The gaming PC runs the game, streams video and audio to the headset, and receives the headset’s control input. Steam describes Remote Play as sending video and audio to another device and returning input to the PC; its documentation says, “Steam Link with Remote Play technology delivers real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol.” Steam Remote Play
Compatibility should come before image-quality comparisons: the headset client, host operating system, GPU video encoder, and individual game’s runtime support all matter. The available official product documentation does not establish a controlled comparison showing that Virtual Desktop, ALVR, or Steam Link is always sharper, faster, or more reliable.
Compare the main alternatives
| Option | Headset and PC support | Network and game considerations | Cost and setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virtual Desktop | Its developer lists Meta Quest 1/2/3/3S/Pro, Pico Neo 3/Pico 4/Pico 4 Ultra, HTC Vive Focus 3/Vision/XR Elite, Play for Dream MR, and Samsung Galaxy XR. PCVR streaming requires a VR-ready Windows PC; macOS listed for general desktop use does not meet that PCVR requirement. | Calls for a wired PC-to-router connection and a 5 GHz AC or AX Wi-Fi router. SteamVR and Oculus Rift games are supported in principle, but the developer warns that not all games are compatible and provides a game compatibility list. | Paid app sold through headset storefronts; check the relevant storefront for current price and availability. Suits readers who want a graphical setup and broad standalone-headset coverage. |
| ALVR | Project README lists Quest 1/2/3/3S/Pro, Pico, Vive Focus, Play For Dream, and other devices. Windows 10/11 and Linux hosts are listed; macOS is not. Quest 1 is not available through the Meta store. | Requires SteamVR and a supported video encoder: NVIDIA NVENC on GTX 1000-series or newer, AMD AMF/VCE, or Intel VPL on supported chips, with current drivers. Recommends 802.11ac 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset, wired Ethernet for the PC, and the same router unless a routed connection is configured. | Open-source project. Better suited to technically confident readers willing to configure SteamVR, encoding, and networking. |
| Meta Air Link | Current official requirements and supported headset/PC combinations are not established here. | Verify current Meta documentation before relying on specific compatibility or setup claims. | Commonly mentioned as an alternative, but do not assume its current support details from third-party comparisons. |
| Wired USB PC connection | Can be considered if using a cable is acceptable; current official Link requirements were not established here. | A wired connection avoids relying on a wireless headset-to-PC path, but exact requirements depend on the current official platform documentation. | Consider it when cable use matters less than wireless freedom; verify current requirements before buying accessories. |
Virtual Desktop: polished paid option
Virtual Desktop is the more straightforward candidate if you want an app-based graphical setup and your headset, Windows PC, and game are supported. Check the developer’s official site and FAQ and its game compatibility information before purchasing. Its published general computer support includes Windows 10 or 11 64-bit and macOS, but PCVR game streaming specifically requires a VR-ready Windows PC.

ALVR: open-source option with more configuration
ALVR is the stronger fit if you prefer open-source software, need a Linux host, or are comfortable configuring technical details. Confirm your specific GPU supports one of the listed encoders and that its drivers are current. ALVR’s project README is the reference for supported devices and setup requirements.
Air Link and USB: verify before choosing
Air Link is often named in comparisons, but current official requirements and supported combinations are not established by the sources cited here. A wired USB PC connection is another possible trade-off for users who accept a cable. For either Meta connection, consult current Meta documentation rather than assuming compatibility or setup steps.

Choose by compatibility and setup needs
- Start with the headset. Match the exact model to the alternative’s current client availability. A supported PC cannot make up for an unavailable headset app.
- Check the host PC. Confirm operating system, VR readiness, GPU encoder support, and current drivers. ALVR lists encoder families and platform support; Virtual Desktop specifies Windows for PCVR streaming.
- Check the game and runtime. General app compatibility does not mean every title works. Use the developer’s compatibility list where available and check whether the game needs SteamVR or Oculus/Rift support.
- Choose your configuration tolerance. Virtual Desktop is a paid graphical app; ALVR is open source but requires attention to SteamVR, encoding, and network configuration.
- Check current storefront details. Pricing and availability can vary and should be confirmed in the headset’s storefront; no current price is established here.
Set up the home network for streaming
The local network is part of the VR connection, not a background detail. Steam, ALVR, and Virtual Desktop documentation all recommend a fast wireless connection for the headset and a wired PC-to-router link. Poor router placement, interference, network congestion, or device isolation can prevent reliable communication; the documentation does not promise a specific latency or performance level.
- Use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for the headset. Steam lists 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 as a minimum for Remote Play, while ALVR and Virtual Desktop also recommend 5 GHz wireless.
- Connect the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet where possible.
- Keep the headset and PC on a network that allows them to communicate. Virtual Desktop troubleshooting notes that firewall or VPN settings can interfere, and public apartment or office Wi-Fi may block device-to-device communication.
- Consider a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router only if the existing network is a bottleneck or does not meet the setup’s needs. Steam Support recommends these router categories, but an upgrade is not automatically necessary. Steam Link support
- If the PC needs a wired link, an Ethernet cable is a practical accessory; no particular cable length or specification is established here.
A router category or Ethernet connection is setup guidance, not a guarantee of low latency. Placement, interference, and the rest of the local network still affect the connection, and no specific router model is validated by these requirements.

Bottom line: choose the setup that fits your PC and headset
For a paid app with broad standalone-headset coverage and a graphical setup, evaluate Virtual Desktop after checking its Windows PCVR and game requirements. For open-source software, Linux host support, and more control over configuration, evaluate ALVR and verify its SteamVR and encoder prerequisites. Treat Air Link and wired USB as options to investigate against current official Meta requirements. There is no evidence here for a universal image-quality, latency, or reliability winner.
