Choose SkySafari if you want more advanced observing tools or telescope control. For beginners, Star Walk 2 and Sky Tonight are worth considering; Sky Guide and Night Sky are Apple-platform alternatives. The right choice depends on whether you want quick identification, event planning, offline use, a deep catalog, or mount control.

What Stellarium Mobile offers
Stellarium Mobile is the strongest general-purpose pick in this shortlist when you want to identify objects and explore how the sky changes with time and location. Its App Store listing describes real-time identification and simulations for different dates, times, and places.
The listing says its optional Plus catalog includes over 1.69 billion stars and over 2 million nebulae and galaxies. Those are figures stated by the app listing, not independently audited catalog counts. Plus also includes a reduced data set for observing without an internet connection and session-planning tools. The listing says full features can be unlocked with a one-time payment or subscription; subscription prices depend on country. Check the current plan details in your store before buying.

Plus telescope control is conditional, not universal: the listing specifies Wi-Fi control for GoTo telescopes compatible with NexStar, SynScan, or LX200 protocols. SkySafari is worth a closer look if you want observing plans, event information, and tools beyond basic object identification. The SkySafari 8 listing describes aiming the device to identify planets, comets, constellations, satellites, stars, and deep-sky objects, as well as a Tonight view, planning details, guided audio tours, and night vision. Optional Premium features include a larger deep-sky database and a light-pollution map. The US listing displayed $6.99 when reviewed; that price may change or differ in other regions. Choose by the job you need the app to do
For quick identification
Start with Stellarium Mobile for a general-purpose sky map. Star Walk 2 is another option if you prefer a visually approachable beginner experience, based on the cited editorial comparison. In either case, confirm current features and device support in the live listing.
For planning an observing session or tracking events
SkySafari 8 describes a Tonight view and planning details, while Sky Tonight is highlighted by a 2026 comparison for beginner event planning. These descriptions make them useful candidates to compare if deciding when to observe matters as much as identifying what is overhead.

For offline field use
Stellarium Mobile’s listing specifically describes a reduced data set in Plus for observing without an internet connection. Confirm what that data set includes and what your selected plan unlocks before heading somewhere without connectivity; offline availability is not established here for the other shortlisted apps.
For telescope control
Stellarium Mobile Plus explicitly lists Wi-Fi control for GoTo mounts using NexStar, SynScan, or LX200 protocols. SkySafari 7 Plus also lists telescope control, but the listing details cited here do not establish compatibility with a particular mount or connection setup. Match the app, telescope protocol, and connection method before purchasing for this purpose.

For an Apple-platform or cross-platform option
Sky Guide and Night Sky appear in the cited comparisons as Apple-platform choices; Star Chart is described as a simple cross-platform planetarium. Those broad labels are not a guarantee that a specific iPhone or iPad model is supported, so check each app’s current store page.

Do not assume that the app name alone tells you what is included. Stellarium Mobile’s listing describes optional Plus features and says the full feature set can be unlocked by one-time payment or subscription. SkySafari 8 lists optional Premium features. Prices, subscriptions, and feature bundles can change and vary by region, so compare the in-app purchase details shown in your local App Store before committing.
The cited US prices for SkySafari 8 and SkySafari 7 Plus are snapshots, not durable buying guidance. The listings reviewed do not establish a comparable current price for every app in this shortlist.
Improve a sky map when its pointer seems wrong
Phone sensors can point inaccurately, and a bright display can interfere with night vision. If the map does not line up with what you see:
