The WD_BLACK SN770M and Crucial P310 2230 are two manufacturer-documented candidates, but neither can be called a universal performance or value winner without comparable current prices and Steam Deck testing. If you want more game storage without opening the device, use its microSD slot instead.
Which SSD fits a Steam Deck?
For an internal replacement, look for a single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe SSD. iFixit’s Steam Deck SSD Replacement guide, written by Carsten Frauenheim, states: “The Steam Deck’s SSD is a single-sided M.2 2230.” Check both the dimensions and sidedness on the exact product listing; a conventional M.2 2280 desktop or laptop drive is not the format identified by this guide.
Two product families have manufacturer-published Steam Deck compatibility information. Treat them as candidates, not as independently tested recommendations:

Those figures are manufacturer sequential-speed specifications, not comparative Steam Deck results. They do not establish that games load proportionally faster on the Deck, or which drive uses less power, runs cooler, or improves battery life. The available evidence does not establish a best-performing drive.

How much internal storage do the Steam Deck models have?
Valve’s specification pages show different stock capacities for LCD and OLED models. The pages reflect configurations listed when accessed in 2026; availability can vary by region and over time.

Is a 1TB or 2TB upgrade worth it?
Choose capacity based on your installed storage and how many large games you want available at once. A 1TB drive may be enough for one library; a 2TB option provides more room but is worthwhile only if the additional capacity meets your needs at a price you consider reasonable. No particular capacity is best for every owner.
There is no reliable apples-to-apples current price-per-terabyte comparison here, so it would be misleading to name a cheapest drive or best deal. Compare listings in your region for the same capacity and check:

- Seller and warranty: confirm who sells the drive and what warranty applies to your purchase.
- Independent testing: look for Steam Deck-relevant results on sustained performance, power draw, temperature, or battery life rather than relying on peak sequential-speed claims.
Should you upgrade the SSD or add a microSD card?
A microSD card is the storage-expansion route that avoids opening the handheld: Valve lists a high-speed microSD slot on both LCD and OLED models. An internal SSD replacement gives you more internal capacity, but requires physical repair work and software follow-through. The available information does not compare loading times, endurance, or current cost for particular microSD cards versus SSDs, so choose based on your preference for avoiding disassembly and the specific products’ current prices and terms.

Replacing the drive is not just a matter of fitting the hardware. iFixit’s LCD replacement guide covers physical removal and replacement; it says additional software tools and procedures are required to install an operating system and directs readers to Valve’s recovery instructions to recover, repair, or re-image SteamOS.

The same guide lists Phillips #1 and #0 screwdrivers, opening picks, and tweezers. It advises discharging the battery below 25%, notes Valve recommends battery storage mode before internal repairs, and warns that an installed microSD card can break when you remove the back cover. It also instructs you to transfer the SSD’s ESD shielding to the replacement or replace the shielding. These are preparation points from the guide, not a guarantee that the repair is risk-free or suitable for every owner.
The cited iFixit procedure is for the LCD model, not a universal set of steps. OLED owners should use the separate Steam Deck OLED Repair Help resource rather than assuming the LCD guide’s pictured steps or internal layout apply unchanged.
