For a mini PC you already own, OBS Studio is the best-supported starting point for a continuous YouTube stream. It is free, open-source, and listed by YouTube as a verified encoder. But that listing is not a performance guarantee: the mini PC still has to encode your chosen resolution and frame rate, maintain a reliable internet connection, and keep the software running.

For a simple loop of prerecorded footage, a full local production setup may add complexity without helping. Choose OBS if you need local control or live production inputs; choose a cloud service if the key requirement is keeping prerecorded content live without running a dedicated PC.
What a mini PC must handle for 24/7 streaming
A continuous stream is a sustained workload, not merely a question of whether OBS opens. Encoding demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Your upload connection must also sustain the outgoing bitrate. OBS explicitly cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not mean a computer is capable of streaming or recording a selected workload. See OBS system requirements.

- Operating system and graphics: OBS publishes requirements for Windows, macOS, and Linux. On Linux/Unix, it requires an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland.
- Encoding capacity: A simple, static scene is generally a different workload from moving footage, multiple sources, filters, and overlays. Validate the exact configuration you intend to leave running.
- Network capacity: YouTube recommends testing your connection and monitoring stream health. Test with motion and audio similar to the real content, rather than relying on a static screen test. YouTube encoder settings.
- Failure handling: OBS or another encoder does not, by itself, guarantee recovery after power, network, or software failures. Restart scripts, watchdogs, remote monitoring, and backup power are separate operational choices; test them on the actual setup.
No universal mini-PC specification or independently verified 24/7 uptime figure is established by the cited documentation. Treat your own sustained test as essential before relying on an unattended stream.
Set up OBS for a continuous YouTube stream
- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility before preparing the mini PC. YouTube live-streaming requirements.
- Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, create or choose the stream, then copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. YouTube says connecting an encoder creates a watch page; a scheduled stream may also require you to go live in Live Control Room. YouTube encoder setup.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, for sending video to Google’s servers. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; audio can use AAC or MP3. Choose a codec your encoder and workflow support. YouTube encoder settings.
- Set constant bitrate and keyframes. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Match these settings in OBS or the encoder you use.
- Choose a sustainable resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps; its listed minimums for those examples are respectively 5 Mbps and 3 Mbps. These are YouTube settings guidance, not a guarantee that your mini PC or connection can sustain them. The right choice depends on upload capacity, codec, frame rate, and encoding performance.
- Run a realistic test and monitor it. Test with the same kind of motion, audio, overlays, and sources you plan to stream. Check OBS for encoding or connection problems and watch YouTube’s stream health and messages. A stable-looking static test does not prove a more complex scene will remain stable.
- Plan sessions around replay needs. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a broadcast longer than 12 hours will produce one complete replay. If the archive matters, schedule shorter sessions and verify the resulting recording in YouTube Studio. YouTube encoder setup.
YouTube limits and content checks for a long-running stream
YouTube’s live-streaming requirements page states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply at the same time. If you are planning multiple simultaneous broadcasts, account for both caps. YouTube live-streaming requirements.

Before looping recordings, confirm you have the necessary rights to the video and audio and that the content complies with YouTube’s rules. A technical ability to stream a recording does not establish that you have permission to use it or that it qualifies for monetization. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before scheduling a continuous broadcast.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube will not accept the stream: Confirm the channel is verified and eligible, that first-time live enablement has completed, and that OBS has the correct stream URL and current key.
- The stream disconnects or reports poor health: Check upload stability and bitrate, then test with realistic motion and audio. Reduce the stream load if the mini PC cannot encode or the network cannot sustain the selected settings.
- The mini PC struggles despite meeting OBS requirements: Reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, and reassess the encoder workload. Published compatibility requirements are not a performance guarantee.
- The replay is incomplete or missing: Check stream duration and YouTube Studio. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not count on a single complete archive for a longer broadcast.
- The broadcast does not restart after an outage: Encoder choice alone does not assure recovery from computer, power, application, or network failure. Test whichever monitoring or restart process you choose; if you do not want a local machine in the chain, consider cloud streaming for prerecorded video.
