The most reliable way to improve performance is to lower the settings that are taxing your particular PC, then compare the same scene after each change. Start with resolution or render scale and demanding graphics options, close unnecessary background apps, and use Steam’s performance monitor to look for CPU, GPU, or memory pressure. There is no universal preset or guaranteed FPS gain: games expose different settings, and the best trade-off depends on the bottleneck.
Establish a baseline before changing settings
Pick a repeatable scene—such as the same save point, route, or built-in benchmark—and note your current graphics settings and how the game performs. Use the game’s FPS display or Steam’s in-game performance monitor where supported. Pay attention to both average smoothness and brief hitches; one short measurement does not diagnose every cause.
Change one setting at a time and replay the same situation. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped, hurt image quality, or made frame pacing less consistent. Record settings you may want to restore.
Which graphics settings should you lower first?
Steam Support notes that higher resolution and settings beyond a game’s recommended levels can have an immediate negative impact on FPS. It does not prescribe one target resolution for every game, so use the following as a test order rather than a universal preset.

| Setting to test | When to try it | Likely trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution or render scale | Try lowering it when the game’s image load is high or monitoring suggests the GPU is constrained. | Lower values can reduce GPU work and improve FPS, but make the image less sharp. Recheck readability and smoothness in the same scene. |
| Demanding visual options | Reduce the demanding options available in that specific game, especially when resolution changes alone are not enough. | Lower visual quality may reduce graphics workload; the exact benefit and image-quality cost vary by game and option. |
| Shader detail | On a system using integrated graphics, try low shader detail if the game offers it. | It may reduce visual detail or effects. Steam recommends low shader detail for integrated graphics, but this is not a guaranteed fix for every title. |
| Display mode | On integrated-graphics systems, try windowed mode if the game supports it. | Steam lists windowed mode as an option to try for integrated graphics; behavior and performance depend on the game. |
Make one change, retest, and keep it only if the performance improvement is worth the visual or usability trade-off. For game-specific controls and recommendations, check that title’s graphics menu and support information.
Close unnecessary background apps before playing
Before launching a game, close applications you do not need and review programs that start automatically. Steam Support recommends investigating unnecessary startup programs and background applications. Avoid disabling security software or arbitrary system services; those are not safe general-purpose performance tweaks.

Retest the same scene after closing apps. If you suspect a conflict with the Steam overlay, temporarily test with it off and restore it if performance does not improve. Some games depend on the overlay, so disabling it for everyone is not a sound default recommendation.
Use Steam’s performance monitor to investigate the bottleneck
Steam’s in-game performance monitor can help you examine CPU, GPU, memory, and settings-related constraints. Available metrics differ by operating system. Treat the information as a diagnostic clue, not proof that a single component or setting caused every hitch.

- If GPU load appears to be the constraint, test a lower resolution or render scale and then reduce demanding visual options.
- If CPU pressure appears high, close unneeded background apps and compare again; graphics reductions may not address a CPU bottleneck.
- If memory pressure is apparent, close unnecessary applications and check whether the problem changes before considering an upgrade.
Check memory pressure and temperatures before buying hardware
Steam Support warns: “If your system runs low on memory then your game or Steam might start being swapped to disk which can cause repeated frame rate hitches.” This can explain recurring pauses even when changing graphics settings has not resolved the problem.
If monitoring and repeatable testing point to insufficient memory, verify your PC’s supported memory type and capacity before considering a compatible RAM upgrade. A purchase is conditional on that diagnosis; the evidence here does not establish a particular kit or a universal upgrade recommendation.

Launch options are not a universal graphics-settings shortcut. Steam’s documented graphics options cover Source and GoldSrc games and generally do not work for most third-party titles. Use an option only when the game supports it, and remove unsupported options if they cause problems.

For a Valve game with misconfigured video settings, Steam documents -autoconfig as an initial troubleshooting step. It is not a general FPS boost for every Steam game.
Intel Precompiled Shaders: a narrow, hardware-specific exception
Intel’s Precompiled Shaders feature is not a general fix for low-end PCs. Intel says it requires supported Intel hardware, a qualifying driver, Windows 10 or 11, an internet connection for the initial download, and a supported Steam-installed game. Support can vary with driver and game updates; Intel’s article reviewed March 16, 2026, describes the feature’s requirements. Any vendor-reported results apply to specified supported hardware, drivers, and games, not to low-end PCs overall.
