Start with the game’s current support notes, record how it runs, then lower demanding settings in small groups and test after each change. If that is not enough, try a lower render resolution or an upscaling option the game and your hardware support. Treat frame caps and synchronization as tradeoffs to tune for your display and preferred balance of smoothness, tearing, and input response.
Why there is no universal best preset
Higher graphics settings can demand more from a PC and result in lower or less stable frame rates. Which settings matter most depends on the game, its current build, your hardware, and what you value: more frames, sharper detail, steadier frame pacing, or lower input latency. Riot Games Support likewise says there is no perfect setup for every PC and recommends adjusting settings iteratively rather than relying on a universal combination (Riot Games Support).
Because early-access games can change between builds, check the game’s current options and latest support notes. A recommendation for one title may not map to another: for example, Obsidian’s graphics and troubleshooting guidance is specifically for The Outer Worlds 2, not a tested preset for an unnamed game.
How to test settings without losing track of what helped
- Establish a baseline. Use a repeatable scene or activity and note how the game feels and performs before changing anything. Avoid changing settings during a scene that varies greatly in activity.
- Change a few demanding settings at a time. Riot highlights shadows; effects, particles, and post-processing; environment, detail, or material quality; anti-aliasing and other image-enhancement effects; and texture quality as options to reduce and test.
- Repeat the same test. Compare smoothness and image quality, not just whether a menu value changed. If the result is worse visually than the improvement is worth, restore the setting.
- Keep or undo changes one group at a time. Once you find a useful change, leave it in place and test the next group. This makes it easier to identify which adjustment helped.
In its The Outer Worlds 2 support guide, Obsidian also lists reflections, global illumination, foliage, view distance, visual effects, textures, and crowd density among its custom-setting examples. Treat these as title-specific candidates to look for—not a guaranteed list of options or a universal ranking for other games (Obsidian Support).

What to lower first
Try reducing visually demanding effects in modest steps, then compare the result. The exact labels and performance impact vary by game, so use the available settings rather than assuming every title has the same options.
- Shadows and lighting effects: Lowering their quality can reduce visual detail in shaded areas. Obsidian’s recommendations for its game include shadows, reflections, and global illumination.
- Effects and post-processing: Reduce effects, particles, or post-processing if the game offers them and the image remains clear enough for you.
- Scene detail: Environment, material, foliage, view-distance, or crowd-density settings may be available; their names and behavior are game-specific.
- Anti-aliasing and image enhancement: Test lower levels or alternate options if offered, keeping in mind that edges may look less smooth.
- Textures: Lower texture quality only if the game offers a useful step for your setup; doing so trades visual detail for a possible reduction in resource demand.
Do not assume every setting affects performance in the same way on every system. If a change makes little difference, restore it and test another setting rather than continuing to sacrifice image quality without a clear benefit.

When to reduce resolution or use upscaling
Reducing the game’s rendering resolution means the graphics card draws fewer pixels, which can improve performance but makes the image less sharp. Riot Games Support lists resolution reduction as an option when performance remains below expectations. Try a modest reduction and judge the result in motion as well as in static scenes.
If the game offers an upscaler compatible with your graphics card, you can test it: upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and enlarges the image. The available choices and visual quality depend on the game and hardware. Obsidian discusses options such as TSR, DLSS, FSR, and XeSS for The Outer Worlds 2; that does not mean another early-access game supports those technologies or that any one will look best on your PC (Obsidian Support).

Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is a Windows feature, not a setting built into every game. Microsoft Support describes eligibility requirements that include Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, a display resolution of 1080p or higher, current drivers, and a compatible device and DirectX 10-or-later game. It is opt-in, requires a compatible display and resolution configuration, and results can vary by system and game. Check Microsoft’s current eligibility and setup details before relying on it (Microsoft Support: Automatic Super Resolution).
Frame caps, V-Sync, and variable refresh rate
A frame-rate cap may help make frame pacing more consistent or prevent the GPU from doing unnecessary work. V-Sync can reduce screen tearing, but may add input latency. The best choice depends on the game, monitor, and the response you prefer; compare the options in the same scene rather than assuming one setting is always superior.

Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds 2 guide suggests testing a cap near the monitor’s refresh rate and discusses V-Sync choices for that game. It also notes that stuttering or behavior with adaptive sync can differ. These are game-specific options to try, not universal values or instructions for every early-access title (Obsidian Support).
On Windows, per-app graphics preferences can help owners of hybrid-graphics laptops check that a game uses the intended high-performance GPU. Windows also offers variable-refresh-rate options for eligible apps when the monitor and drivers support them. Microsoft’s DirectX documentation describes these Windows graphics settings; available options depend on the app and system (Microsoft DirectX Developer Blog).

Check causes beyond graphics settings
If changes to graphics options do not resolve the problem, poor performance may not be fixed by lowering image quality alone. Use the game’s own current support guidance and check the following:
- System requirements: Compare your PC with the game’s current minimum and recommended requirements.
- Graphics drivers: Check for an up-to-date driver for your GPU and restart after installing it. Obsidian includes these steps in its support guidance for The Outer Worlds 2.
- Background work: Close unnecessary applications that may use CPU or RAM, then test again.
- Overlays: If stuttering persists, disable overlays one at a time to see whether one is involved. This is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
- GPU selection: On a hybrid-graphics laptop, check the per-app GPU preference in Windows graphics settings where available.
These checks are troubleshooting steps, not proof of a particular bottleneck or guaranteed performance gains. The cited Obsidian steps are for its own game, while Windows GPU and variable-refresh options apply only where the hardware, drivers, and app are eligible.
Choosing a sensible next step
- If performance is low and the image is detailed: Test shadows, effects, and other demanding settings in small groups before lowering resolution.
- If performance remains poor after settings changes: Try a lower render resolution or a supported in-game upscaler, accepting the possible loss of sharpness.
- If the game looks acceptable but motion feels uneven: Test a frame cap and, if supported, V-Sync or variable refresh options; compare frame pacing and input response.
- If stutters continue: Check requirements, drivers, background tasks, overlays, and whether the game is using the intended GPU.
An exact preset or expected frame-rate gain cannot be determined without the game name and build, PC components, display, and performance goal. For advice specific to your setup, provide those details or follow the game’s latest support notes.
