For everyday browsing, Firefox and Brave are strong choices if you want built-in defenses against cross-site tracking; Safari is a natural fit for Apple-device users, though the Apple privacy overview cited here dates to November 2019 and should not be treated as a current feature checklist. None is established by the available evidence as the single most secure browser. Choose based on your devices and the protections you value, and remember that private windows mainly limit traces left on your device—they do not make you anonymous online.
Is private browsing actually private?
Private or incognito browsing is primarily a way to reduce what the browser saves locally after a session. Mozilla says Firefox Private Browsing clears search and browsing history when the session ends; Apple’s November 2019 overview says Safari Private Browsing does not save browsing history. These features can help when other people use the same device, but they do not, by themselves, hide activity from websites or network operators.
For protection against cross-site tracking while browsing normally, look at a browser’s tracking and cookie protections—not just its private-window mode.
Which browser blocks trackers by default?
Firefox: layered tracking and cookie protections
Mozilla describes Enhanced Tracking Protection and Total Cookie Protection as working together against cross-site tracking. Mozilla says Total Cookie Protection is enabled by default in Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection mode and keeps each site’s cookies isolated from other sites. Firefox also documents built-in fingerprinting protection. These are Mozilla’s descriptions of Firefox features, not the results of an independent comparison. See Mozilla’s explanation of Total Cookie Protection and its Enhanced Tracking Protection overview.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Firefox is a practical option if you want built-in tracking defenses without first installing a separate extension. Its private-window feature addresses local history traces; its tracking protections address a different problem: third-party tracking during browsing.
Brave: Shields and optional Tor windows
Brave says its Shields feature blocks trackers, cross-site cookie tracking, and fingerprinting, and describes additional defenses against bounce tracking. Brave also offers an optional private window with Tor integration. Brave warns that Tor windows can be slower, and the feature should be understood as a specialized privacy option—not a guarantee that all browsing is anonymous. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent comparative test results. See Brave’s Shields overview.

Safari: an Apple-ecosystem choice, with an older cited overview
Apple’s Safari Privacy Overview, published in November 2019, describes Intelligent Tracking Prevention and fingerprinting defenses as enabled by default, and says Safari is built into Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Because that overview is dated, it is useful as a historical description of Apple’s approach, not as an exhaustive statement of current Safari features or defaults. See Apple’s November 2019 Safari Privacy Overview.
How do the browsers compare for private browsing?
| Browser | Local privacy in a private window | Documented tracking protections | Compatibility and controls | Evidence qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox | Mozilla says Private Browsing clears search and browsing history when the session ends. | Mozilla documents Enhanced Tracking Protection, Total Cookie Protection enabled by default in Standard mode, and built-in fingerprinting protection. | Blocking third-party resources can cause layout issues on some pages. Mozilla describes first-party cookie functions as continuing to work, with limited access exceptions for embedded features. | Feature descriptions from Mozilla; no controlled cross-browser test or ranking established here. |
| Brave | Brave offers private windows, including an optional Tor-integrated mode. | Brave says Shields blocks trackers, cross-site cookie tracking, and fingerprinting, and describes bounce-tracking defenses. | Brave warns that Tor-integrated windows can be slower. | Feature descriptions from Brave; no controlled cross-browser test or ranking established here. |
| Safari | Apple’s November 2019 overview says Private Browsing does not save browsing history. | Apple’s November 2019 overview describes default Intelligent Tracking Prevention and fingerprinting defenses. | Apple’s cited overview does not establish current compatibility behavior or a current, exhaustive set of user controls. | Apple’s cited overview was published in November 2019; it should not be read as a current feature specification. |
What can stronger tracking protection break?
Blocking third-party tracking resources can also block content a page relies on. MDN notes that blocked third-party content can sometimes cause layout issues. Mozilla says first-party cookies continue to support ordinary site functions and describes narrow exceptions that let embedded features request access when needed. See MDN’s guide to third-party cookies and Mozilla’s explanation of third-party cookies and tracking protection.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- If a page looks incomplete, check whether the browser reports blocked content or offers a site-specific exception.
- Prefer a narrow exception for the affected site or embedded feature over turning off protections everywhere.
- If a site still fails, compare its behavior in a normal window and a private window; extensions and session state can also affect what loads.
What is the best private browser for my device?
- Choose Firefox if you want Mozilla-documented tracking protections, including site-specific cookie isolation enabled by default in Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection mode.
- Choose Brave if you want Brave’s built-in Shields protections and may value an optional Tor-integrated private window, accepting that it can be slower.
- Consider Safari on Apple devices if you want Apple’s built-in browser and ecosystem integration. Treat the cited November 2019 privacy overview as dated, rather than relying on it for current implementation details.
There is no verified, current, controlled comparison across desktop and mobile versions here, so a categorical winner would overstate what is established. Browser features and defaults can change; check the vendor’s current documentation for the specific version and platform you use.

Brave’s privacy policy describes different Safe Browsing request paths by platform. Brave says desktop requests are proxied to avoid sharing the user’s IP address with Google. On Android, it says operating-system functionality may send requests that expose the device IP to Google. On iOS, it says Safari-provided functionality uses Google and Tencent depending on region, with requests proxied by Apple. These details are Brave’s own policy descriptions; they illustrate why privacy behavior can vary by platform even within one browser. See Brave’s browser privacy policy.
