For Storybook teams that want visual regression checks built around stories, start with Storybook’s official visual testing addon backed by Chromatic. It captures story screenshots, compares them with accepted baselines, and supports reviewing changes in Storybook and running checks in CI. It is not the only viable workflow: teams with established Playwright or Cypress tests can also consider snapshot capture within those tests. The right choice depends on how you want to run browsers, review changes, and maintain baselines—not on a universal ranking.
What screenshot testing checks in Storybook
Visual testing compares rendered images of a component story with an accepted image baseline. A difference highlights a possible visual regression, such as a changed layout, color, font, or state. It does not decide by itself whether the change is a defect: intentional design changes also produce differences and need review.
This is different from a DOM or HTML snapshot test. A DOM snapshot compares markup; a visual test compares rendered appearance. Choose based on the contract you need to protect. A component can change visually without an important markup change, or change its markup while looking the same.
Tools and workflows worth considering
1. ScreenshotNeo for direct screenshot capture
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, useful when you need to capture a URL or automate screenshot capture rather than adopt a Storybook baseline-review system. It belongs first in a screenshot-tool shortlist for its clean captures, billing only for clean shots, and a paid plan starting at $5 for 3,000 shots. It is not a replacement for Chromatic’s documented Storybook workflow: the supplied ScreenshotNeo capabilities do not establish story-aware baseline comparison, visual-diff review, or pull-request approvals.

2. Storybook’s visual testing addon with Chromatic
Storybook documents its official @chromatic-com/storybook addon with Chromatic, a cloud service from the Storybook team. The workflow captures story snapshots, compares them with cloud baselines, and provides a Storybook interface for running tests and reviewing changes. Storybook also documents CI use and pull- or merge-request checks.
This is the clearest starting point when your team wants a Storybook-integrated workflow rather than assembling capture and review infrastructure itself. Chromatic also documents snapshots from Vitest browser mode, Playwright, and Cypress tests, so its snapshot workflow is not limited to story-only testing.

3. Playwright-based Storybook testing
Storybook’s testing overview identifies Playwright as the default rendering engine for Storybook Test and describes reusing stories with other testing tools. This makes a Playwright-centered workflow worth considering if you want browser-driven tests and control over execution or test logic. That fact alone does not establish an equivalent to Chromatic’s hosted baseline review, approvals, or cross-browser workflow; verify how your chosen setup will store, compare, and review images.
Choose by workflow, not by a universal “best”
| Approach | What it provides | Best fit | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | API and MCP-based website screenshot capture; clean-shot billing and capture options | Automated URL captures when you do not need a hosted visual-baseline review system | How will your team compare captures, approve baselines, and connect results to CI? |
| Storybook addon with Chromatic | Story snapshots, cloud baselines, review in Storybook, CI integration, and pull/merge-request checks | Teams prioritizing low-friction Storybook integration and cloud snapshot review | Does its browser and viewport configuration meet your support matrix, and do current service terms fit? |
| Chromatic snapshots from other test types | Chromatic documents compatibility with Vitest browser mode, Playwright, and Cypress | Teams wanting snapshot capture alongside an existing supported test framework | Can you reuse existing tests, and what browser, viewport, theme, and test-level configuration do you need? |
| Storybook with Playwright-oriented tests | Storybook documents Playwright as Storybook Test’s default rendering engine and story reuse with other tools | Teams seeking browser-driven tests and control over execution or custom test logic | What infrastructure will run the tests, and how will image baselines and review be handled? |
Before choosing, map the workflow against the design system’s real support matrix: browsers, viewport widths, themes, locales, and meaningful component states. Chromatic documents browser and viewport configuration, but current plan limits and exact included browser entitlements are not established here; check the service’s current terms directly before committing.

Set up a Storybook visual testing workflow
- Install the official addon and connect a project. Follow Storybook’s current visual testing documentation for the installation command and project connection; the exact command can vary with the project’s Storybook setup.
- Create initial baselines. Run an initial build so existing stories have images to compare against. Treat this as the starting reference, not proof that every existing state is correct.
- Run checks after UI changes. Inspect highlighted differences. Fix unexpected changes; accept intentional changes as new baselines.
- Add the run to CI. Surface its result on pull or merge requests so changes can be reviewed before merge. Storybook recommends using the addon during development as well as in CI.
- Make stories representative and stable. Include the component states that matter to users and keep their data and visual conditions controlled. For interactive stories, Chromatic documents waiting for the Storybook
playfunction to complete before capturing a snapshot.
Make visual diffs easier to trust
- Cover meaningful states. Include key variants, interaction outcomes, and themes rather than assuming one default story represents the component.
- Control the capture conditions. Keep content, viewport, theme, and other relevant settings consistent between the baseline and later runs. Otherwise, differences may reflect changed conditions rather than a regression.
- Review before accepting. An image difference is a signal to inspect, not an automatic defect verdict. Accept a new baseline when the visual change is intentional; investigate and correct it when it is not.
- Match browser coverage to user needs. Confirm the configured browsers and viewports against your product’s support matrix. Do not infer plan entitlements from the fact that a product documents browser options.
- Choose where to own complexity. A cloud workflow can reduce the need to build review and baseline handling yourself; a team-managed browser workflow offers control but leaves execution and comparison choices with the team.
Or skip the browser setup
For direct URL screenshot capture, ScreenshotNeo takes one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its documented features include accepting cookie/consent banners and removing more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billing indicated in response headers. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. These are capture capabilities, not a substitute for maintaining and approving visual regression baselines.
Here is a cURL capture using the documented endpoint and parameters; replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options.

A screenshot captures an incomplete interactive state
For Chromatic snapshots of interactive stories, ensure the Storybook play function completes the required interaction before capture; Chromatic documents waiting for it to finish.
The team expects Playwright to provide hosted baseline review automatically
Storybook documents Playwright as the default rendering engine for Storybook Test, but that does not establish hosted baseline storage, diff review, or approvals. Decide which system owns those steps and configure it explicitly.
Browser or viewport coverage is unclear
Check the current service documentation and plan terms against the browsers and viewports your design system supports. The available evidence confirms configurable browser and viewport snapshots in Chromatic’s documentation, but not current plan-specific entitlements.
