Test pages with cookie banners, lazy images, web fonts, animations, infinite scroll, responsive breakpoints and authenticated routes. Full-page output is not equivalent across services: one may scroll to trigger lazy loading, another may stitch sections, and a third may rely on the browser’s native full-page implementation.
Controls that affect pixel output
- Viewport width and height change responsive layout and line wrapping.
- Device emulation, device scale factor and color scheme affect CSS media queries and raster sharpness.
- Wait conditions determine whether fonts, data and animations have settled.
- Selectors let you capture one component rather than an entire document.
- Authentication may require cookies, custom headers, an Authorization header or a scripted login.
- Retries, timeouts, parallelism and stored failure artifacts determine CI reliability.
How to take a full-page screenshot with Playwright
Playwright is the best choice when the image is one assertion in a larger browser test. The following Node.js script opens a URL, waits for the page to settle, scrolls through lazy-loaded content, and writes a full-page PNG.

Authenticated pages
Log in in the same test, or create a storage-state file once and load it for subsequent captures. Keep credentials in CI secrets, never in the repository. If the application uses short-lived tokens, renew them in the setup step so a retry does not capture a logged-out page.
Use it in CI
Store the image as an artifact even when an assertion fails. A useful CI job records the URL, viewport, commit SHA, browser version and console errors beside the image. Limit parallel workers to what the runner’s memory can sustain; many Chromium processes can make screenshots slower rather than faster.

Full-page capture pitfalls and fixes
Lazy-loaded images are missing
Scroll the page before capture, wait for image elements to report a completed load, or use a provider that documents lazy-load scrolling. For an image-heavy page, verify the bottom third of the output rather than checking only the header.
Animations produce different pixels
Freeze CSS animations and transitions, hide rotating content and capture at a fixed delay after the final network request. If animation is part of the feature under test, assert a stable element separately and do not use a pixel-perfect baseline for the moving region.
Sticky headers repeat or cover content
Native full-page implementations can duplicate a fixed header or overlap sections. Test the exact browser and provider path you will use; if necessary, temporarily change position: fixed to position: static with injected CSS.
Responsive wrapping changes
Record the viewport width, height and device scale factor with every artifact. A one-pixel width change can alter line breaks and therefore the entire lower portion of a full-page image.

Troubleshooting
Timeout or blank image
Increase the navigation timeout, wait for a specific application selector instead of global network idle, and inspect console and network errors. A page that requires a login, blocks unknown user agents or fails in a normal browser will also fail through an API.

Consent dialog remains

Cost, caching and reliability decisions
Estimate monthly volume from scheduled builds, preview deployments and retries, not just the number of pages. A cache with a deliberate TTL prevents repeated captures of unchanged pages, while a short TTL is safer for dashboards and personalized content. Store the response’s verdict and billed status with the image so a failed or cached result is distinguishable from a successful paid capture.
For CI, keep a small Playwright suite when you need selectors, assertions, trace files or multi-step state, and use a hosted API for broad visual sampling or production URLs. A hybrid design often gives the clearest failures: Playwright proves behavior in a controlled test, while the API supplies repeatable artifacts for many routes.
