For most flat-screen phones and tablets, a tempered-glass protector made for the exact device model is the best place to start. Choose flexible PET or TPU film for a curved or folding display, or if you want a thinner layer. Before buying, check case clearance and touchscreen or fingerprint-reader compatibility. A protector can help shield the display, but it does not make a device unbreakable or protect its back, edges, and corners.
How to choose a screen protector
There is no single best screen protector for every device. Compare the screen’s shape, the material and finish you prefer, and whether the product is compatible with your exact model. Screen size alone does not establish fit: camera openings, curved edges, sensors, and case dimensions can differ between devices.
- Confirm the exact device model. Check the product listing and your device settings or original packaging. A protector for a similarly sized phone may not fit properly. Samsung cautions that some third-party protectors can have fit or function problems. Samsung’s guidance on third-party protective film is specific to its support site in the Philippines; check local and device-specific guidance for your market.
- Match the material to the screen. Tempered glass is a practical starting point for most flat screens. PET or TPU film is thinner and more flexible, making it a reasonable option for some curved or folding displays. These are general trade-offs, not guarantees that one material will prevent damage in every situation.
- Pick a finish for your viewing needs. Clear protectors preserve a conventional viewing experience. Privacy finishes reduce visibility from the sides; matte or anti-glare finishes address reflections. Both can change how the display looks, so weigh that trade-off against the problem you want to solve.
- Check sensor and case compatibility. Look for explicit support for your precise model, particularly if it has an in-display fingerprint reader. Confirm whether the product is case-friendly: a case that presses against the protector’s edges can interfere with fit.
- Review what comes in the kit and what support is offered. Compare the number of protectors, installation tools, replacement terms, and warranty details stated by the seller. These vary by product; do not assume that a brand’s terms apply to every model or package.
Glass or film: which is the better fit?

Which finish should you choose?
- Clear: The straightforward choice if you do not need to change visibility or reflections.
- Privacy: Consider it if reducing side visibility matters. Expect a different viewing experience than with a standard clear protector.
- Matte or anti-glare: Consider it if reflections are a problem. Compare the finish carefully because it changes how the display appears.

How to install a protector without trapping dust
Dust under the protector can spoil an otherwise suitable fit. Follow the instructions for the specific kit you bought, since trays and product generations differ. ZAGG’s manufacturer guidance recommends this preparation sequence:
- Wash your hands before handling the protector or preparing the display.
- Clean the display with a microfiber cloth and the cleaning wipe supplied or recommended for the product. Dry it thoroughly.
- Inspect the screen under bright light and use the dust-removal sticker to lift any remaining debris.
- Use the alignment tray, if included, according to that kit’s manual. Align the protector before pressing it onto the display.
ZAGG’s installation guide says some bubbles may settle over a few days, but that guidance should not be assumed to apply to every protector. If debris is trapped or an edge will not adhere, consult the product instructions rather than repeatedly lifting the protector and risking damage.

What a screen protector can—and cannot—protect
A screen protector covers only part of the device. Mac Frederick, owner of Phone Repair Philly, told NBC Selected: “It isn’t going to cover every square millimeter of the glass display.” A protector also generally leaves the back, edges, and corners exposed. Pairing it with a suitable case can address some of those uncovered areas, but neither accessory guarantees that a device will survive every drop.
Be cautious with claims based only on a marketing hardness label: that label is not, by itself, a verified impact result. No universal performance figure establishes how well all protectors prevent scratches or breakage.

How to compare product recommendations
Product roundups can help identify candidates, but their recommendations are not interchangeable. Look for the exact device variant, the reason a product is recommended, and whether the page describes independent testing, expert advice, or the publisher’s own editorial assessment. Also check the date and current listing before relying on availability or terms.
- NBC Selected’s US shopping guide, updated September 2, 2026, names Spigen AluminaCore Tempered Glass Screen Protector as its overall pick and reports that the package includes an alignment tray and two protectors. It presents this as its recommendation, not a test conducted for this guide; confirm the variant for your device and current availability.
- The same NBC guide lists ZAGG InvisibleShield and budget options including Supershieldz and Ailun. It reports that ZAGG’s edges may lift over time and that it costs more; those are that publisher’s product observations, not universal findings.
- DeltaThree’s April 15, 2026 commercial roundup names Spigen GlasTR EZ Fit for general use, Belkin ScreenForce Pro for anti-glare, and Whitestone Dome Glass for compatible curved displays.
