Ventoy is the strongest Rufus alternative when you want several boot images on one USB drive. Install it on the drive, then copy ISO and other supported image files onto it and choose one from Ventoy’s boot menu. For a conventional one-image write, balenaEtcher is an option; for supported Linux live USBs, consider UNetbootin. None is a universal replacement: image compatibility, computer firmware, and whether you need customization all matter.
Which Rufus alternative should you choose?
| Your need | Tool to consider | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boot several installers or rescue images from one USB | Ventoy | Installs a bootable environment on the drive; you copy multiple image files to it and select one at startup. | Installing Ventoy formats the selected drive and erases its data. Image and firmware compatibility still need to be checked. |
| Write one operating-system image to USB or SD media | balenaEtcher | Provides a conventional image-flashing workflow for OS images. | The official information available here does not establish its current host OS matrix, verification behavior, or compatibility with every Windows installer. |
| Create a Linux live USB from a supported download or local ISO | UNetbootin | Lets you select a Linux distribution for download or provide an ISO. | Some Linux images need extra options or modifications; non-Linux ISO files should not be expected to work as-is. |
| Create Windows installation media with customization | Rufus or Microsoft’s current media-creation route | Rufus describes Windows installation media as a use case, and its workflow may offer download and customization options. | Check current Rufus and Microsoft requirements and options. Do not assume other tools have feature parity. |
Choose based on the computer you will use to prepare the drive, the image you need to boot, whether you want one image or several, and whether you need persistence or custom installation settings. A tool that writes an image directly and one that presents a menu of image files use different workflows.
How Ventoy handles multiple boot images
Ventoy’s project page lists support for ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD(x), and EFI files. You can copy multiple files into folders on the USB drive and select an image from the boot menu. Its listed features also include multiple firmware architectures, Secure Boot support, Linux persistence, and automated installation features for Windows and Linux. These are Ventoy project claims; check its tested-image information and the target computer’s firmware when compatibility is critical.
The setup guide says installing Ventoy formats the USB drive, erasing the data on it. After installation, the guide says Ventoy searches folders recursively for image files. Back up the drive and verify the selected device before installation. The project page also reports that “1400+ image files are tested” and “90%+ distros in distrowatch.com are supported.” Those are Ventoy’s own figures; the page does not give them a clear publication year, so they should not be treated as independently measured or current guarantees.

When balenaEtcher is a fit
balenaEtcher’s official site describes flashing operating-system images to SD cards and USB drives, making it a candidate for a straightforward, single-image workflow. The available official details do not establish which host operating-system versions or image formats it supports today, nor whether it suits every Windows installation image. Check current product documentation and the instructions for the specific image before proceeding.
When to use UNetbootin
UNetbootin is aimed at Linux live USB workflows. You can choose a distribution for download or supply a local ISO. Its instructions say most Linux ISO files should load through the generic disk-image option, but warn that some distributions require additional boot options or modifications. They also caution that non-Linux operating systems use a different boot mechanism and should not be expected to work as-is.

Rufus describes itself as a tool for formatting and creating bootable USB media from images, including Windows, Linux, and UEFI use cases. A Windows Central guide published July 19, 2025 describes a Rufus Windows workflow with an option to download Windows installation images and customize some creation settings. Options and operating-system requirements can change, so confirm the current Rufus and Microsoft instructions for the Windows version you are installing rather than relying on an old procedure.

Prepare and use bootable media safely
- Get the image: Obtain the operating-system image from its publisher or another source you trust. Follow the publisher’s instructions to verify it when available.
- Back up the USB drive: Save anything you need before using a media-creation tool. Ventoy explicitly says its installation formats the drive and erases its data.
- Check the target device: Confirm the correct USB drive is selected before starting. Choosing another disk by mistake can destroy its data.
- Match the image to the computer: Check the target computer’s boot mode and firmware. A successful write does not guarantee the computer will boot the media without the right boot-menu choice or firmware configuration.
- Use suitable storage: If you need a drive, choose one with enough capacity for the intended image and workflow; no single capacity is appropriate for every image.
- Test when practical: Try the finished media on the computer where you plan to use it, especially when the installation is important.
