If you want a fantasy party RPG in the vein of Dragon Age, start with Pillars of Eternity for real-time-with-pause combat, companions, and consequential choices. Choose Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition if you would rather have tactical, turn-based battles and a more open-ended approach. These are strong Dragon Age alternatives on Steam, but check each game’s current Steam Deck compatibility details before buying: a SteamOS/Linux requirement or controller support alone does not confirm a Deck rating.
What makes an RPG feel like Dragon Age?
“Like Dragon Age” can mean several things: a fantasy setting, a customizable or authored hero, a party of companions, story choices with consequences, and combat built around a group rather than a lone character. The closest matches below share several of those traits, but they differ most in how battles work.
Pillars of Eternity is the more familiar starting point if you want real-time-with-pause party combat. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the better fit if you want to plan each move in tactical, turn-based encounters. Neither is simply a Dragon Age reskin; each offers its own setting and approach.

Pillars of Eternity: the closest combat-style match
Choose Pillars of Eternity if Dragon Age’s party-based fantasy adventure and real-time-with-pause battles are the main draw. Its Steam product description promises a world shaped by the player’s choices, and it describes a journey with companions. The game is single-player and lists Steam Cloud support. Obsidian Entertainment is the developer and Xbox Game Studios the publisher.

Steam lists Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux requirements. Those operating-system requirements do not establish the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility label, so check the live store listing rather than assuming it is Deck Verified or Playable.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition: the tactical alternative
Pick Divinity: Original Sin 2 if you want to take turns, assess the battlefield, and plan your party’s actions rather than pause real-time combat. Its Steam listing describes exploration, consequential choices, relationships with companions, and a party of up to four. You can play solo or cooperatively. The Windows system requirements list 60 GB of storage.

The game’s tactical approach makes it a strong companion-focused alternative, but it is not a direct combat match for Dragon Age. The Steam page is a digital PC purchase listing; it does not establish a physical Amazon edition.
Dragon Age: Origins: the baseline
If you have not played the series’ original entry, Dragon Age: Origins is the clearest point of comparison. Its Steam page describes a customizable hero, six origin stories, choices that affect the story, and real-time-with-pause combat. BioWare developed it, and Electronic Arts published it.

The Steam listing says the base game is no longer available separately and shows an Ultimate Edition listing. Store offers can vary by region and change over time. Owning or installing this older PC RPG does not, by itself, confirm how it currently works on Steam Deck.
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord: a looser match
Bannerlord is worth considering if what you want is a medieval role-playing sandbox, with diplomacy, trade, armies, and real-time battles. It is a different kind of recommendation: its store description does not foreground the companion-centered narrative that makes Pillars of Eternity and Divinity: Original Sin 2 closer Dragon Age alternatives.

Valve uses four labels: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Verified means a game works well out of the box; Playable means it may require manual adjustment. Valve’s review considers controller input, display readability, setup, and system support. The review is ongoing, and details appear on individual reviewed titles in the Steam store or library. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility guide explains the categories.
