The best router for Comcast/Xfinity depends first on how your internet reaches your home. On coaxial cable service, a standalone router needs a cable modem or Xfinity gateway upstream; it cannot replace the modem. If you already have a working modem or gateway, a standalone router such as the TP-Link Archer BE770 is one option to consider. If you are replacing the cable equipment too, choose a compatible modem/router combo or a separate compatible modem and router. Check the exact device, address, and speed tier with Xfinity’s My Device Info before buying.

First, identify the equipment setup you need

“Router” and “modem” describe different jobs. A router creates your home network and provides Wi-Fi; on coaxial Xfinity service, a cable modem connects that network to the cable line. A gateway combines both functions. Xfinity’s bring-your-own-equipment guidance distinguishes these device types and directs customers to check compatibility for their address and plan.

  • You already have a modem or gateway: A standalone router can provide Wi-Fi or replace the router portion of your setup. Confirm how the existing equipment should be configured.
  • You want to replace both devices with one unit: Look for a modem/router combo that Xfinity identifies as eligible for your location and speed tier.
  • You want two separate devices: Choose an eligible cable modem and pair it with a standalone router. A modem without built-in Wi-Fi still needs a router for wireless access.
  • You have fiber delivered to your unit: Xfinity says a standard third-party router that matches the speed tier can be used. The cable-modem requirements described above apply to coaxial service, not this fiber setup.

Best standalone router example: TP-Link Archer BE770

The TP-Link Archer BE770 is a standalone Wi-Fi 7 router worth considering if you already have a compatible modem or gateway and want a high-capability router. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 review names it the best overall Wi-Fi 7 router in its guide and reports a 10 Gbps WAN port, a 10 Gbps LAN port, four 1 Gbps LAN ports, and two USB 3.0 ports. The outlet measured 2.181 Gbps of wireless throughput at 15 feet in its lab. That is a review result under its test conditions, not an Xfinity speed guarantee or an Xfinity-specific compatibility test. See Tom’s Guide’s Wi-Fi 7 router review for its product and testing details.

The BE770’s port mix may suit a home with multi-gig wired equipment, while its four 1 Gbps LAN ports serve ordinary gigabit wired clients. Count the ports and their speeds against the devices you actually plan to connect. The review also describes the router as physically large, so consider its placement before buying. On coaxial Xfinity service, it still needs a modem or gateway between the router and the cable feed.

Modem/router combo example: NETGEAR CAX80

Xfinity’s available recommended-device PDF lists the NETGEAR CAX80 as a DOCSIS 3.1 modem/router with built-in Wi-Fi, no telephone support, and up to 2.36 Gbps wired download. That makes it an example of the all-in-one form factor, not a blanket confirmation that it is eligible for every current address or plan. Xfinity says device recommendations are refreshed quarterly; verify the CAX80 in My Device Info for your address and speed tier before purchase. The PDF is available from Xfinity’s device guidance.

Separate modem example: ARRIS SURFboard S33

The same Xfinity PDF lists the ARRIS SURFboard S33 as a DOCSIS 3.1 modem without built-in Wi-Fi or telephone support, with up to 2.33 Gbps wired download. It is a modem, not a router: pair it with a separate router such as the BE770 if you need Wi-Fi. As with the CAX80, confirm current address and tier eligibility in My Device Info rather than relying on the PDF alone.

When Xfinity’s gateway or an extender may fit better

Xfinity describes its Gateway as a combined modem and router. For the gateway described on its product page, Xfinity lists DOCSIS 3.1, tri-band 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz Wi-Fi, maximum data throughput of 2.5 Gbps, one 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port, and three 1 Gbps Ethernet ports. The page also promotes app management and security features; these are vendor descriptions, not independent comparative findings. Xfinity says its gateway is included at no extra cost in the latest monthly plan for new members, but plan terms can vary. Check the terms offered for your account on Xfinity’s gateway page.

A single router may be adequate for a smaller or open layout. For a larger home, multiple floors, or interior walls that create dead zones, consider mesh equipment or Xfinity’s WiFi Extender options rather than assuming a newer Wi-Fi generation will solve coverage by itself. Placement and, where available, wired backhaul can affect results. Xfinity describes its Pro WiFi Extender and optional battery backup, with service and geographic restrictions; check availability and terms for your location on its gateway page.

Netgear Nighthawk Cable Modem WiFi Router Combo C7000-Compatibility Cable Providers including Xfinity by Comcast, Cox (Renewed)
  • Compatible with major cable internet providers including Xfinity and Cox. NOT compatible with Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, CenturyLink, DSL providers, DirecTV, DISH and any bundled voice service. Best for cable provider plans up to 800Mbps.

How to choose for your Xfinity plan and home

  1. Check the equipment role. Decide whether you need only a router, a modem/router combo, or a separate modem and router. For coaxial service, a standalone router alone does not connect to the cable line.
  2. Verify the exact model. Open Xfinity’s My Device Info, sign in for personalized results or enter your address, and check the model against your service and speed tier before ordering.
  3. Account for Xfinity Voice. If you use Xfinity Voice, make sure the device you intend to use supports telephone service or retain the required voice equipment. The cited Xfinity device table marks both the CAX80 and S33 as lacking telephone support.
  4. Match coverage to the floor plan. Consider a single router for a compact layout and mesh or extender options for larger, multi-story, or difficult-to-cover homes. Do not infer whole-home coverage from a speed rating alone.
  5. Count wired clients and check port rates. Look at the number of Ethernet devices and whether they need gigabit or multi-gig connections. A router with a fast WAN port may still have slower LAN ports for some devices.
  6. Compare ownership with your actual plan. Factor in the gateway terms for your account, desired features, support needs, and the work of maintaining your own equipment. Xfinity says owners of their own devices are responsible for updates, security, Wi-Fi security management, and troubleshooting; see its own-equipment guidance.

What Wi-Fi 7 does—and does not—tell you

Wi-Fi 7 can offer capabilities that newer client devices may use, but buying a Wi-Fi 7 router does not raise the speed of your Xfinity plan or guarantee stronger coverage. The benefit depends on compatible devices, the layout, and the rest of the connection. Xfinity says its gateway is backward compatible with Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 6, and Wi-Fi 5 clients; do not assume that statement establishes the exact feature support of every router model.

Comcast Corporation’s XB10 explainer says, “Data automatically shifts to a clear path,” and lists response time “as low as 5 milliseconds” for Wi-Fi 7 with XB10. Those are Comcast’s descriptions and comparison-table claim for that equipment—not a general measured result for every Wi-Fi 7 router or every Xfinity connection. See Comcast’s Wi-Fi 7 and XB10 explainer.
