There is no universally best ReShade preset—or a guaranteed way to improve image quality without a performance cost. ReShade applies effects to the finished game frame, so the right approach is to fix one visible problem at a time, compare results in the same scene, and remove effects whose cost or artifacts outweigh their benefit.
Start with the game’s own image-quality settings
ReShade is a post-processing injector: it applies effects after the game has rendered a frame. It can adjust that image, but it does not replace the game’s rendering pipeline or provide every input available to native graphics features. ReShade’s official site documents effects such as SMAA, screen-space ambient occlusion (SSAO), depth of field, sharpening, and color adjustments.
Before adding a shader, compare the game’s own anti-aliasing and resolution-scaling options. Native features may have information unavailable to a post-process. In particular, community guidance notes that temporal anti-aliasing uses motion information that a post-process such as ReShade SMAA does not have; that is an architectural distinction, not proof that native anti-aliasing looks better in every game. Community discussion of low-impact ReShade settings provides supporting context.
Build a baseline you can compare
Use a repeatable scene in the game you actually play. Keep resolution, display mode, in-game anti-aliasing, resolution scaling, and other graphics settings the same while you compare. Note frame rate or frame time using the same method for each run; a result from a different scene or setting combination is not a useful comparison.

- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
- Choose a scene with the edges, lighting, or colors you want to improve.
- Record the game’s current settings and performance with ReShade effects disabled.
- Enable one ReShade technique, then compare the same scene both while still and while moving.
- Keep it only if the visual improvement is worthwhile and the performance cost and artifacts are acceptable.
This process identifies what each effect contributes. Turning on a large preset all at once makes it harder to spot which shader helped—or which one caused a problem.
Choose effects for a specific image problem
| Effect | When to try it | What to check | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMAA | Jagged edges that remain after checking the game’s anti-aliasing options | Edges in motion as well as in a still image | ReShade lists SMAA as an antialiasing option, but there is no universal comparison with each game’s native AA. |
| SSAO or another depth-based ambient-occlusion effect | You want added contact shading and the effect’s depth input works | Whether shading looks natural, and whether edges or objects show leaks | It depends on a usable depth buffer, and cost and artifacts vary by game and shader. |
| Depth of field | You want a deliberate focus or cinematic effect | Whether blur hides details you need to see | Depth dependent and optional; it is not a general clarity improvement. |
| Sharpening | The image looks soft and a careful adjustment improves it | Whether edges become harsh or develop halos | No universal best amount is established; avoid treating maximum sharpening as maximum clarity. |
| Color adjustments, saturation, film grain, chromatic aberration, or blur | You specifically want the corresponding visual treatment | Whether the effect improves the intended look without reducing readability | These are stylistic choices, not automatic image-quality upgrades. |
ReShade’s effect documentation describes these categories, not one best setting for every game or display. Start with a restrained adjustment, then compare; do not assume that adding more effects makes the image better.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Check depth-buffer effects before tuning them
Ambient occlusion and depth of field rely on depth information from the game. If that information is unavailable or unreliable, adjusting shader values may not solve the problem. ReShade’s troubleshooting guidance notes that settings such as MSAA can interfere with depth-buffer availability in some cases, and depth-based effects cannot account for scene elements missing from the buffer. That can produce edge leaks that are a limitation of the input rather than a slider error. See the ReShade forum support material for depth-buffer troubleshooting.
Depth access is automatically disabled by ReShade during multiplayer to reduce exploitation risk. Do not try to bypass game protections or assume a depth-dependent effect will work online. Confirm the behavior for the installed game and version, and leave depth-based effects off if depth access is unavailable.

Use Performance Mode after tuning
Once you have chosen and adjusted your effects, enable ReShade’s Performance Mode and recheck the preset. ReShade’s published version information describes this mode as optimizing effects by treating preset values as constants during compilation. It is a sensible step for a settled preset, but the documentation does not establish a guaranteed frame-rate improvement. ReShade’s published version information explains the feature model.
Compare the preset before and after enabling the mode in the same scene. If you continue changing values, turn the mode off while tuning and enable it again when the settings are final.

Decide what belongs in your preset
Judge each effect on its visible improvement, its frame-time or frame-rate cost in the same scene, its behavior while moving, any depth-buffer dependency, and whether the game already offers a better-fitting native option. Remove a shader if it introduces distracting blur, excessive darkening, halos, leaks, or a cost you do not want to accept.
You can keep a lightweight everyday preset and a separate, heavier preset for slower-paced play if you prefer different trade-offs. There is no evidence-based universal FPS figure or shader ranking to apply across games and hardware; the meaningful result is the comparison from your own repeatable scene.
