Google lists it as compatible with both streaming-device families and provides a replacement-pairing procedure. A generic universal remote may operate your TV’s power or volume without navigating Google TV, so confirm the exact model supports the controls you need before buying.
Which remote should you buy?
Start with the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote if your device is a Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer (4K). Google’s specifications list both as compatible. The remote includes a directional pad, Home, Back, volume, power, a customizable button, YouTube, Netflix, mute, and microphone/voice control.
That recommendation is specific to Google’s streaming devices. The compatibility information cited here does not establish that the remote works with every television that has Google TV built in.
What “universal” means for Google TV
A remote can control a TV’s power, volume, or input without controlling the streamer’s Google TV interface. Google’s own remote uses Bluetooth and IR, and its setup options cover power, volume, and input for a TV, receiver, or soundbar. Input control may not work with some device models.

Google documents Bluetooth accessory pairing, but that general guidance does not prove that every third-party Bluetooth remote can navigate Google TV or provide voice search. Before choosing a non-Google remote, check the manufacturer’s support for your exact streamer model and verify separately that it offers:
- Google TV navigation, including directional controls, Home, and Back.
- Voice search, if you rely on it.
- TV, receiver, or soundbar power and volume control, if you want one remote for those devices.
- A documented pairing method for your particular streamer.
A generic infrared universal remote should not be treated as a complete streamer replacement unless its documentation explicitly confirms the Google TV navigation functions you need.

Pair a replacement Google remote
- On the Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer that is already set up, press and hold the button on the back of the streaming device for 5–10 seconds to start pairing mode.
- Insert two AAA batteries into the replacement remote and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If pairing does not start automatically, hold Back and Home on the remote for three seconds.
These steps are Google’s replacement setup instructions for the two streaming-device families. For a general Bluetooth accessory, Google gives the path Settings > Remote & Accessories > Pair remote or accessory; using that menu alone does not guarantee that a third-party remote supports full navigation or voice control.
Set up TV, receiver, or soundbar controls
Google’s remote can be configured to control power, volume, and input for a TV, receiver, or soundbar through the streamer’s settings. The available behavior depends on the connected equipment, and Google notes that input control may not work with some models.

HDMI-CEC is another way compatible HDMI devices can respond to a single remote. Google describes it this way: “CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) allows for HDMI devices to be controlled with one remote control.” On supported TVs, CEC may switch the television to the streamer’s HDMI input, and certain TVs may power on when casting. For the CEC function Google describes, the streamer must be powered from a wall outlet rather than the TV’s USB port.
CEC may appear under different names in TV menus: Anynet+ on Samsung, BRAVIA Link or BRAVIA Sync on Sony, SimpLink on LG, and EasyLink on Philips. Check your TV’s manual and settings; availability and behavior vary by model.

Use your phone if you need a remote now
If you have not bought a replacement yet, Google says the Google Home app or Google TV app can operate a Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer. In the Google TV app, select the device, enter the code shown on the TV, and complete pairing. See Google’s phone remote instructions for the applicable steps.
