These are a practical preflight checklist, not universal competitive settings: presets apply to PS5 games, support varies, and there is no one-size-fits-all sensitivity or dead-zone value.
1. Review the PS5 Game Presets
Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. Check the defaults for performance or resolution mode and first-person view. The page also includes third-person view, subtitles and audio, and online multiplayer session preferences. These presets apply to PS5 games, and Sony notes that not every game supports every setting.
Sony describes the choice this way: “Make motion in your game smoother with performance mode, or have higher graphic quality in resolution mode.” The setting is a default for games that offer the corresponding modes; check the shooter’s own options to see what it supports.
Performance mode or resolution mode?
- Performance mode: favors smoother motion.
- Resolution mode: favors higher graphic quality.
Choose based on your preference and the options available in that shooter. The console preset does not force a game to offer either mode.

2. Check resolution, 120 Hz, VRR, and ALLM
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and review the output signal and your connected display’s support for resolution, HDR, VRR, and 120 Hz. A compatible display and game are prerequisites for the corresponding features; enabling a setting alone does not guarantee a benefit.
Sony says 120 Hz output enables that output for TVs and games that support a 120 Hz frame rate. If turning it on causes output problems, Sony advises turning it off. VRR adjusts refresh rate in real time on supported TVs and games, and results vary by TV. ALLM also depends on display support; when VRR output is active, low-latency mode can remain active even if ALLM is set to Off.

Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Sony describes VRR as allowing the refresh rate to adjust in real time while using TVs and games that support it. Check what your particular screen and shooter support rather than treating 120 Hz, VRR, or HDR as universal improvements.
3. Set controller vibration and trigger effects to taste
Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) to adjust vibration and trigger-effect intensity. Trigger effects work only in games that support them. Try the settings in the shooter and keep the feel you prefer; Sony’s guidance does not establish that a particular intensity improves aim or competitive performance.

4. Review button assignments and accessibility
For system-level controller remapping, go to Settings > Accessibility > Controllers. You can also review the PS5’s text and display adjustments and chat transcription options. Game chat transcription is available only in supported games.
Check the shooter’s own accessibility menu as well. Available features differ by game, and a useful button layout depends on your needs and comfort; there is no single remapping that is best for everyone.

5. Tune the shooter’s own controls and graphics
After the console checks, open the new game’s settings and inspect its options for:
- Sensitivity and aiming controls
- Dead zones and aim assist
- Field of view
- Audio and graphics
These controls are game-specific. The PS5 settings guidance does not establish universal numeric values for them, so start with the game’s defaults and adjust in its practice area or a low-stakes match to suit your preferences.

Quick preflight checklist
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets; review view and performance/resolution defaults.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output; verify which features your display supports and disable 120 Hz if it creates output problems.
- Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General); adjust vibration and trigger effects to taste.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Controllers; review remapping and other accessibility options.
- Launch the shooter and inspect its own sensitivity, dead-zone, aim-assist, field-of-view, audio, and graphics settings.
