To make PlayStation Portal Remote Play smoother, enable Remote Play on your PS5, use the same PlayStation account on both devices, and give the stream a stable network path: wire the PS5 to your router when practical and connect Portal over 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Sony recommends a connection of at least 15 Mbps, but that is not a guarantee of smooth play. Portal adapts stream quality to the connection and lets you cap it at 1080p High Quality or 1080p Standard.
Set up the PS5 for Remote Play
Install the current PS5 system software, connect the console to the internet, and sign in with the PlayStation account you use on Portal. Menu wording can vary by system software version and region.

- On the PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you want Portal to wake the console while it is in Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
These settings make Remote Play available and allow the PS5 to wake over the network. They do not improve Wi-Fi signal quality by themselves. Sony says the settings remain enabled until you change them. See PlayStation’s PS Portal Remote Play setup guide.
Prioritize a stable network path
Sony’s recommendations focus on connection stability rather than a special PS5 display or performance setting. Start with the console’s connection to the router, then improve Portal’s Wi-Fi conditions.

- Use Ethernet for the PS5 when practical. An Ethernet cable is optional but is Sony’s recommended way to connect the console to the router.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal. If the PS5 also uses Wi-Fi, Sony recommends connecting both devices to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check band steering if Portal keeps switching bands. Some routers automatically move devices between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. If yours does this, Sony suggests disabling band steering for the Portal connection if possible. Router controls differ, so use the router maker’s instructions rather than assuming a universal menu path.
- Use Sony’s speed guidance as a target, not a promise. Sony Interactive Entertainment recommends a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience; its support page does not state a publication year. Meeting that recommendation does not guarantee smoothness, and Sony does not specify a universal latency, jitter, or packet-loss threshold in the cited guidance.
These recommendations cannot eliminate congestion, interference, distance, or routing problems. Public Wi-Fi can be outside your control, and availability of some public networks—including certain 5 GHz networks—may be limited by regional requirements. Choose Portal’s maximum video quality
Portal automatically adjusts video quality to the internet connection. Its quality option sets a maximum; it is not a fixed bitrate or a promise that the stream will stay at a particular resolution.

- 1080p High Quality: Start here if the connection is stable and you prefer the higher quality ceiling.
- 1080p Standard: Try this if you see stutters or unstable quality, then compare image quality and stability under the same network conditions. It may help in some situations, but it is not a guaranteed fix.

Troubleshoot stutters in this order
- Wire the PS5 to the router. If it is already wired, keep that connection in place while testing other changes.
- Improve the wireless signal path. Move Portal and, if needed, the PS5 closer to the router; reduce physical obstacles between them.
- Recheck the PS5 settings. Confirm Enable Remote Play is on. For wake-from-Rest-Mode use, confirm both network-related Rest Mode options are on.
- Confirm the account and connection. Make sure both devices use the same PlayStation account and that the PS5 is online.
- Test 1080p Standard. Compare it with High Quality on the same network and location to see whether the lower maximum improves your session.
- Change networks if public Wi-Fi is the problem. Access restrictions or local network quality may be outside your control.

What to compare when tuning your setup
Change one condition at a time so you can tell what helped. Compare PS5 wired versus wireless, Portal on 5 GHz versus another available Wi-Fi option, and your current placement versus a closer, less obstructed position. For Portal quality, compare High Quality and Standard while keeping the network conditions the same. Sony does not publish a universal router configuration or latency threshold in the cited support pages.

- If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the same Wi-Fi network as Portal and test again.
- If Portal is far from the router or behind obstacles, move it closer before changing several settings at once.
- If the stream still stutters, test Standard quality and, where possible, another network.
