The best premium stargazing app depends on what you want to do: identify bright objects, learn the night sky, plan observing sessions, or control a telescope. Stellarium Mobile Plus stands out for a documented mix of offline sky data and planning tools; SkySafari is worth considering for telescope-focused use, while Star Walk 2 is positioned by one comparison guide as a beginner-friendly option. Check your device, the exact paid tier, and your mount’s compatibility before buying.
How to choose a premium stargazing app
Start with your observing goal rather than a “best overall” label. An app for recognizing a planet by pointing your phone at the sky has different priorities from one used to plan a session or send commands to a telescope.
- Casual identification: prioritize a clear interface and the objects you want to identify. One comparative guide characterizes Star Walk 2 as beginner-friendly, but the available sources do not establish a detailed official comparison of its paid features. See the guide’s recommendations.
- Learning and exploring: consider how the app presents sky objects and whether its catalog and simulation tools suit you. Stellarium Mobile Plus lists 3D views and ocular simulation among its additions. Check Stellarium Labs’ feature details.
- Session planning: look for event calendars and observing tools. Stellarium Plus lists observing-session tools and an event and satellite-pass calendar; SkySafari 7 Plus’s US iOS listing describes an Events Finder.
- Telescope control: confirm that the app supports your exact mount and connection method. A feature label alone does not guarantee compatibility.
- Observing away from reliable internet: verify what is actually available offline. Stellarium Labs explicitly says its app works offline with a reduced catalog; the sources do not establish equivalent offline behavior for every competing app.

What Stellarium Plus adds over the standard mobile app
Stellarium Labs distinguishes Plus from the standard mobile version. Its Plus feature list includes more than just a larger sky catalog: it also names telescope control using the Stellarium Telescope Server protocol, ocular and instrument simulation, observing-session tools, an event and satellite-pass calendar, and 3D views. If one of those tools is the reason you would pay, confirm that it is included in the version and platform you intend to buy. Stellarium Mobile Plus details.

Offline access is a particular differentiator supported by the product page. Stellarium Labs says the app works without internet, with a reduced offline set of 2.5 million stars, 2.9 million deep-sky objects, and 10,000 asteroids. Those are the vendor’s stated offline catalog figures; do not treat them as a promise that every online feature or catalog item is available offline.
SkySafari Plus, Pro, and Premium are not interchangeable labels
The available SkySafari material describes separate app products and a Premium service. SkySafari 7 Plus’s US iOS listing names telescope control, a space simulator, and an Events Finder, while SkySafari 8 Pro’s publisher page describes Pro capabilities including StarSense Explorer integration and event finding. The separate Premium page discusses membership features. Before checkout, read the current listing for the exact app and confirm whether any feature you want requires a recurring membership rather than a one-time app purchase. Check telescope compatibility before paying
“Telescope control” is not universal compatibility. Stellarium Plus specifies support through the Stellarium Telescope Server protocol. SkySafari sources describe telescope-related features, but the available product information does not provide a complete current compatibility matrix for either app. Verify all of the following against the app maker’s current documentation and your equipment:
- Exact telescope mount or controller model.
- Connection method, such as the required network or accessory setup.
- Whether the app version and your phone or tablet support that setup.
- Whether the desired function is basic control, alignment assistance, or another specific workflow.
If the exact setup is not clearly documented, ask the app publisher or mount manufacturer before buying. Do not infer support for your mount from a general telescope-control claim.

Check the price and platform in your own storefront
Prices and availability can vary by country, operating system, and date. SkySafari 7 Plus was listed at $9.99 in the US App Store snapshot captured for this comparison; that figure is neither a guaranteed current price nor a worldwide price. The cited evidence does not establish a current price comparison across all four apps or a complete platform matrix. Check the current listing on the device you plan to use, and make sure you are comparing the same app edition and purchase type.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which app should you choose?
- Choose Stellarium Mobile Plus if its stated offline catalog, planning tools, simulations, or Stellarium Telescope Server support match your needs.
- Consider SkySafari if you want its listed telescope-related features or event-finding tools; distinguish the Plus or Pro app from the separate Premium membership.
- Consider Star Walk 2 if beginner accessibility is your priority, while checking its current premium feature list directly before purchase.
For a simple choice, write down the one paid feature you actually need, then confirm its tier, offline availability if relevant, device support, and equipment compatibility. That avoids paying for a premium label when the feature you want is in another edition or unavailable with your setup.
