Windows Update time depends on more than download speed. An update may be downloading a large payload, waiting on a metered connection, unpacking files, checking drivers, repairing the component store, or installing after a restart. Remove common bottlenecks before starting, then troubleshoot the specific stage if progress stops.
Keep the computer connected to AC power, use a stable Internet connection, and leave enough free disk space. Microsoft lists connection speed, network settings, and update size as major factors in download and installation duration.
Before starting Windows Update
- Connect the laptop or tablet to AC power. Do not begin a major update with a low battery; Microsoft recommends plugging in laptops and tablets while updates are installing.
- Use a reliable network. Avoid weak Wi-Fi, unstable mobile hotspots, and congested networks. If you use a VPN, disconnect it while troubleshooting a slow or failed update unless your network requires it. Microsoft specifically lists disabling a VPN as a remedy for error 0x800f0922.
- Check free space. Microsoft states that upgrades require at least 16 GB free on a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB on a 64-bit operating system. Feature upgrades may need additional temporary space, and insufficient storage can produce errors such as 0x800f0922. Remove temporary files, uninstall unused applications, or connect a USB drive if Windows requests more space.
- Disconnect unnecessary hardware. Remove external storage, USB drives, docks, printers, and other nonessential devices before retrying an installation. External hardware and its drivers can cause setup failures.
- Correct the system clock. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically, then select Sync now under Additional settings.
Install updates using the normal Windows Update path
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for Windows updates.
- When an update is offered, select Download & install.
- Restart when Windows prompts you.
Windows 11 also has a release-priority setting. Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update and turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. This prioritizes non-security updates, fixes, features, and improvements. Security updates are delivered whether this switch is on or off, so enabling it does not create a security requirement.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Select Download & install when it appears.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Version 22H2 was its final feature update. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. If the device supports it, moving to Windows 11 is the longer-term solution.

Remove network restrictions that delay downloads
A metered connection can prevent updates from downloading automatically. On Wi-Fi, open Start > Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi, select the connected network, open Metered connection, and turn it off while updating if unrestricted data use is acceptable.
Do not assume that changing every network setting will make an update faster. Windows Update can use Delivery Optimization to download different parts from Microsoft, another computer on the local network, Internet peers, or Microsoft Connected Cache. It connects to reliable sources in parallel and can fall back to HTTP.
Check Delivery Optimization
On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization. Under Allow downloads from other devices:
- Devices on my local network allows sharing with computers on the same network but prevents Internet-peer sharing.
- Off prevents downloading from and uploading to other PCs. Windows still downloads directly from Windows Update and Microsoft Store.
On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Delivery Optimization. On earlier Windows 10 builds, the setting may be called Choose how updates are delivered. Selecting PCs on my local network restricts sharing to the local network.

Delivery Optimization is enabled by default for peer-to-peer local-network sharing on Windows client Enterprise, Professional, and Education editions when devices are behind the same NAT. In a business environment, administrators can control it with Group Policy or MDM, including Microsoft Intune.
Turning Delivery Optimization off is not automatically a speed improvement. It removes peer and cache sources and leaves direct downloads from Windows Update and Microsoft Store. Disable it only when local peers or a configured cache are slow, unreachable, or misconfigured. The HTTP-only mode still uses Delivery Optimization’s HTTP downloader; it does not disable Windows Update downloads.

Understand why an update appears stuck
A percentage that remains unchanged is not proof that the installer has stopped. Windows may be validating packages, applying file changes, waiting for disk operations, or processing a large update. The percentage can remain at one value for a long time and then advance.
For an installation that remains at 51–99%, Microsoft recommends checking for updates again or running the Windows Update troubleshooter. Avoid repeatedly powering off the computer while the installation is working. If the screen has shown no change for an unusually long period and the system is completely unresponsive, record the displayed error or percentage before restarting so you have useful information for troubleshooting.

In Windows 11, configure Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Choose Automatically from Adjust active hours, or choose Manually and specify the hours. Active hours reduce interruptions; they do not make the installation itself faster.
Why some updates download less than expected
Windows Update does not always download a complete replacement for every file. For supported quality updates, it first attempts an Express payload containing the differences needed to update existing binaries. It can fall back to the full-file payload when necessary.
Express delivery also applies to feature-update downloads on supported Windows 10 configurations beginning with version 1709, including clients connected directly to Windows Update or using Windows Update client policies. Configuration Manager support depends on the Configuration Manager and Windows 10 versions in use.
A proxy that does not support byte-range requests can prevent Express delivery and force the larger full-file payload. This increases bandwidth use and download time, especially across a corporate network.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 11
Use Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Microsoft’s current troubleshooting guidance also directs Windows 11 and Windows 10 users to automated troubleshooting in the Get Help app.
Windows 10
Use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
Run the troubleshooter after confirming the computer is online and connected to power. It is more useful when Windows reports a failure than when a download is simply progressing slowly.
Reset a damaged Windows Update cache
Cache corruption can produce error 0x8007000d, and Windows Update database or service problems can produce 0x80248014. First try the graphical reset:
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Right-click Windows Update and select Stop.
- Delete the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the folder itself.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Run Windows Update again.
If that does not help, open Command Prompt with Run as administrator. Enter these commands one at a time:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak

sfc /scannow
Wait for sfc /scannow to reach 100 percent before closing Command Prompt. Then restart and run Windows Update again.
For file-system errors, run:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may schedule the repair for the next restart. Save your work and allow that restart to complete.
Address drivers and security software
Microsoft identifies incompatible network and graphics drivers as a common cause of error 0xC1900101. In Device Manager, check Network adapters and Display adapters. You can right-click a device and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers, or choose Uninstall device when following a specific manufacturer or Microsoft troubleshooting instruction. Download replacement drivers from the PC or device manufacturer when Windows cannot locate a suitable one.
Third-party antivirus and security products can also interfere with feature updates. If Microsoft or the product vendor identifies an incompatibility, temporarily uninstall the software, update Windows, and reinstall a compatible version afterward. Confirm the product key, subscription, and installer are available before removing it. Do not leave the computer unprotected longer than necessary.

Common Windows Update errors
| Error | Likely area to check |
|---|---|
| 0x8007000d | Damaged update files or a corrupt update cache |
| 0x800705b4 | Update took too long or was interrupted |
| 0x80240034 | Incomplete update or connection problem |
| 0x800f0922 | Insufficient space, .NET Framework, another component, or VPN interference |
| 0x80070057 / 0x80080005 | Corrupted files, permissions, or incorrect configuration |
| 0xC1900101 | Incompatible driver, commonly network or graphics |
| 0x80248014 | Windows Update database problem or stopped service |
| 0x80070005 | Access denied or insufficient permissions |
| 0x80070002 | Update failed to install |
Use the code to choose the relevant fix rather than repeatedly restarting the update. For example, clearing the cache is more appropriate for 0x8007000d, while checking drivers is more appropriate for 0xC1900101.
What not to do
- Do not disable Delivery Optimization just because an online guide claims it always slows updates. It can reduce download time by using local peers or a cache.
- Do not assume every update downloads the entire file. Express delivery can use a smaller delta payload, although unsupported conditions can trigger a full-file fallback.
- Do not repeatedly force power-off during installation.
- Do not begin with aggressive registry cleaners or random service scripts. Use the built-in troubleshooter, cache reset, DISM, SFC, and CHKDSK steps first.
- Do not treat an old Windows 10 troubleshooting path as the current Windows 11 workflow. Windows 11 uses System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and Get Help.
FAQ
How can I make Windows Update install faster?
Use a stable, unrestricted Internet connection, disable a metered Wi-Fi setting while updating, disconnect a VPN when it is not required, connect the device to AC power, free at least 16 GB or 20 GB depending on system architecture, and remove unnecessary external hardware. Delivery Optimization may also improve downloads when local peers or Microsoft Connected Cache are available.
Should I turn off Delivery Optimization?
Usually not. Delivery Optimization can download update parts from Microsoft, local PCs, Internet peers, or a Connected Cache in parallel. Turn it off when peer or cache connectivity is demonstrably slow or misconfigured; Windows will still download directly from Windows Update and Microsoft Store.
How long should a Windows Update take?
There is no fixed time. Connection speed, network settings, update size, disk performance, driver checks, and installation work all affect the duration. A percentage that does not change for a while is not necessarily a failure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do if Windows Update is stuck at 51 to 99 percent?
Wait if the computer is still responsive, then check for updates again or run the Windows Update troubleshooter. If the problem repeats, reset the update cache and run DISM followed by SFC from an elevated Command Prompt.
Does Windows Update always download the full update?
No. Supported updates can use Express delivery, which downloads deltas for existing files. Windows can fall back to the larger full-file payload, including when a proxy does not support byte-range requests.
Why does Windows Update say there is not enough space?
Microsoft states that upgrades need at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. Clear temporary files, uninstall unused applications, or use a USB drive if Windows offers that option.
The Bottom Line
The best speed improvements come from removing predictable blockers: power loss, metered or unstable networking, VPN and proxy problems, insufficient storage, damaged update files, and incompatible drivers. Start with the normal Windows Update path, allow the installation time to work, then use the troubleshooter, cache reset, DISM/SFC, and driver checks in that order. Delivery Optimization should be judged by the network it is using—not disabled as a blanket rule.
