There is no single best photo-storage app for everyone. The right choice depends on your devices, whether videos count against your quota, the privacy model you want, and any subscriptions you already pay for. Current provider information supports a useful comparison of Google Photos, Amazon Photos, Proton Drive and Microsoft OneDrive; it does not establish a defensible ranking of 11 apps.
Compare the four apps with the clearest current details
Storage quotas are not directly comparable unless you check what counts toward them. In particular, a photo-only benefit is different from storage shared with videos and other files.

Choose based on your devices and library
For Google-centered photo search and editing
Google Photos is a natural option if you want a library with search, organization, sharing and editing tools. Check which features are available for your account, device and region, and remember that backed-up items generally use Google Account storage.
For eligible Amazon members with many photos
Amazon Photos is worth considering if you qualify for the unlimited full-resolution photo benefit in a supported country. It is not unlimited storage for your entire library: videos and other files have a separate 5 GB allowance under that benefit.

For privacy-focused cloud backup
Proton Drive is the clearest fit among these options if end-to-end encryption is a priority. Proton also describes automatic backup, albums and sharing, with 5 GB on its free tier. Consider whether that capacity and the paid tiers suit the size of your library.
For a Microsoft and Windows workflow
OneDrive may fit a household already using Microsoft services and Windows folder backup. If your iPhone or Mac stores optimized iCloud photos, account for Microsoft’s stated upload limitation before relying on OneDrive as the destination.

Check the storage math before moving a library
- Find out what shares the quota. Google Photos backups use Google Account storage in general; Amazon’s universal 5 GB allowance covers both photos and videos.
- Separate photos from videos. Amazon’s eligible-member benefit is unlimited for full-resolution photos, not videos or other files.
- Check quality and date exceptions. Google’s documented non-counting exception applies to certain High quality or Express quality uploads made before June 1, 2021; do not assume new uploads receive that treatment.
- Price the plan you would actually need. Include existing memberships, household needs and any paid storage required. Confirm current price and eligibility with the provider before subscribing because plan details can change.
- Verify the upload path. Automatic camera-roll backup, desktop folder backup and manual upload are different workflows. Confirm which devices and file types your chosen app supports.
Keep another copy of irreplaceable photos
Cloud sync is useful, but it should not be the only copy of photos you cannot replace. Keep an independent backup as well; an external drive is one possible local companion. A second copy helps protect against problems affecting access to the cloud library or the account used to reach it.

A fair broader ranking would also need comparable information about device support, video quotas, original-quality handling, restore workflows, sharing, discovery tools, privacy and regional availability.
