There is no single best phone audio profile for everyone. Start with neutral or default playback for music, adjust equalizer settings only to suit your taste, use dialogue enhancement when available for hard-to-hear video, and try a voice-focused microphone mode for calls in noisy places. The right options depend on your phone, software, headphones, and app.
Start with neutral sound for music
Begin with your phone’s default playback or a neutral equalizer setting. Then, if the sound does not suit you, try one preset or a small custom adjustment at a time. Compare at the same listening volume: a louder setting can seem better even when the EQ itself is not.
Equalizer presets and spatial effects change how music is presented; they are not universal quality upgrades. If your phone offers Dolby Atmos or another spatial effect, audition it with the music you normally listen to and keep it only if you prefer the result.
On Samsung Galaxy
On supported Galaxy phones, Samsung lists EQ options including Normal, Pop, Classic, Jazz, Rock, and Custom. The available sound-quality and effects options can vary by device and software version. Samsung also notes that UHQ upscaler requires compatible headphones. Samsung’s sound-quality and effects guide describes these options.

Samsung’s Scalable Codec is a separate compatibility feature, not an EQ setting to hunt for on every Android phone. Samsung says it is enabled automatically on Android 7 (Nougat) or later when a Galaxy device is paired with a compatible Bluetooth device; it adjusts bitrate in response to interference to help maintain playback stability. That behavior depends on the compatible Samsung pairing. Samsung’s documentation explains the requirement.
On iPhone
If you use supported headphones and want to tailor how you hear soft sounds or certain frequencies, try Headphone Accommodations. Apple lets you control whether the accommodations apply to Phone, Media, or both, so a change intended for calls need not also affect music. Support depends on the headphones. Apple describes the feature as a way to “Make soft sounds louder and boost some frequencies so phone calls and media sound crisper and clearer.” See Adjust audio settings on iPhone for compatibility and setup details.

For video, prioritize dialogue clarity
If speech is difficult to understand, try a dialogue enhancement control before adding bass or spatial effects. Apple documents Enhance Dialogue for supported video in the Apple TV app. It is an app- and content-specific option, not a phone-wide dialogue setting. The control may not appear for every video. Galaxy sound options vary by model and software, so check the available playback effects on your own device rather than assuming a particular dialogue control exists. If a spatial effect makes speech less clear to you, turn it off for that video; clarity matters more than an immersive label.

Choose call microphone modes by what should be heard
When you are somewhere noisy, a voice-focused microphone mode can reduce surrounding sound so the other person hears you more clearly. When the other person needs to hear the environment too, such as during a group discussion or while sharing ambient sounds, use a standard or broader-capture mode if the app offers one.

On iPhone
During a supported call or recording, open Control Center and select the microphone mode. Apple’s requirements vary by mode and call type: Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum in FaceTime audio or video, or certain third-party apps, require iOS 15 or later; Voice Isolation during a phone call requires iOS 16.4 or later; Automatic mic mode requires iOS 18 or later. On Samsung Galaxy
On select Galaxy devices and call contexts, Mic mode offers Standard, Voice focus, and Full spectrum. Voice focus applies increased filtering. If Mic mode is missing, Samsung says the device may not support it for that app or call mode; availability can differ between cellular calls, speakerphone, and supported VoIP apps. Headphone Accommodations on supported iPhones can adjust frequencies or make soft sounds louder, with separate Phone and Media controls. On supported Galaxy phones, Adapt Sound can create a personalized sound profile. These features can help tailor listening, but they are not substitutes for professional hearing care. Compatibility and menu availability vary by phone, software, and headphones. Apple’s audio settings guide and Samsung’s sound effects guide provide platform details.
Quick setup by use case
- Music: Leave EQ at Normal or the phone’s default. Compare one preset or a modest custom change at the same volume, and audition spatial processing rather than assuming it improves every track.
- Video: If dialogue is hard to follow, check for a dialogue enhancement option in the video app. Apple’s Enhance Dialogue is documented for supported Apple TV app video.
- Noisy calls: During a supported call, select Voice Isolation on iPhone or Voice focus on Galaxy if available. If the mode is absent, the phone, software, app, or call context may not support it.
- Calls where ambient sound matters: Choose Standard or a broad-capture option such as Wide Spectrum or Full spectrum when the app and call type support it.
- Personal listening adjustments: Explore Headphone Accommodations or Adapt Sound if the feature is supported by your phone and listening equipment.
Why the same setting may not appear on every phone
Audio features depend on more than the phone brand. Model, operating-system version, headphones or Bluetooth accessory, app, content, and call type can all determine which controls are available. Apple and Samsung’s instructions cover their supported devices, not every Android manufacturer or third-party app. If a menu path or mode is missing, check the current support guide for your exact model and try the relevant call or media app; do not assume another device’s instructions apply unchanged.
