There is no universally best PC preset for exploring large modded areas in Red Dead Redemption 2: results depend on your hardware, resolution, mods, and preferred balance of frame rate and image quality. Use Rockstar’s in-game quality slider as a baseline, tune the settings that Rockstar identifies as performance priorities, and benchmark on your own PC. Rockstar cautions that settings affect performance differently across system configurations; its published guidance does not establish a preset tested for large modded areas.
How to find the best settings for your PC
Treat this as a benchmark-led setup, not a one-click recipe. Before tuning, note your CPU, GPU and available VRAM, system RAM, display resolution, current graphics API, mods in use, and the frame-rate and visual-quality balance you want. Without those details, exact values would be guesses.
- Set your resolution and starting point. Choose the resolution you intend to play at, then use the in-game graphics quality slider for a quick baseline. Rockstar presents the slider as a starting point, not as a validated preset for modded areas. See Rockstar’s PC graphics tuning guidance.
- Tune the priority settings first. Change MSAA, reflection quality, water quality, volumetric quality, and near volumetric resolution in manageable groups. Rockstar identifies these as useful settings to begin detailed tuning; it does not prescribe a universal value for any of them.
- Benchmark each meaningful change. Run the built-in Graphics Benchmark and compare the resulting performance with the image quality you want. Keep notes so you can revert a change that does not help on your system.
- Refine the other settings. Once the first group is settled, adjust the additional graphics options listed below. Change settings methodically and benchmark again rather than copying a low, medium, or high recipe that has not been established for your hardware and mods.
- Check the places you actually explore. As practical guidance, test the kinds of large areas and conditions where you notice slowdowns. Rockstar’s general tuning advice does not specifically benchmark mods or large modded areas.
Which graphics settings should you tune?
Start with Rockstar’s priority settings
Work through MSAA, reflection quality, water quality, volumetric quality, and near volumetric resolution first. Their effect will vary by system, so compare the benchmark and the picture after each change or small group of changes. The tuning article does not say that any one of these settings must be low or high for modded exploration.
Then refine the remaining options
After the first group, Rockstar’s tuning list also includes TAA, textures, lighting, shadows, screen-space ambient occlusion, anisotropic filtering, far shadows, tessellation, FXAA, volumetric lighting, triple buffering, global illumination, particles, mirrors, and far volumetric resolution. Adjust only as needed to meet your own target; no source-backed values are available here for a universal preset.

Use the VRAM meter only as error-specific guidance
If you encounter the specific out-of-memory error ERR_GFX_D3D_DEFERRED_MEM, Rockstar’s troubleshooting article suggests beginning with the Video Memory meter at about 66% of the total available video memory, then lowering settings if memory problems persist. That figure is a troubleshooting starting point for this error, not a general-purpose VRAM cap or a recommended setting for everyone. Follow the full Rockstar PC requirements and the error-specific out-of-memory troubleshooting guidance when diagnosing the problem.
When to switch Vulkan and DirectX 12
Rockstar documents Vulkan and DirectX 12 as graphics API options to try when graphics initialization fails. Its guidance does not rank either API as faster, so treat switching as a diagnostic step for an initialization problem—not as a performance tweak to apply automatically.

For that error, Rockstar’s instructions involve changing the API through the game’s Advanced Graphics settings or the system.xml configuration file, and clearing files whose names begin with sga_. Follow the steps in Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_INIT troubleshooting article. Do not edit configuration files or remove shader-cache files casually when the game is working normally.
What Rockstar’s PC requirements can—and cannot—tell you
Rockstar’s published requirements are reference points for the game, not guarantees of performance in large modded areas. The figures below are from its requirements article last updated April 30, 2024. Rockstar also notes that requirements can change as content and code change.

|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 8 GB RAM | Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 2 GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 3 GB | 150 GB |

Meeting a listed tier does not promise a particular frame rate with mods. Compare your own benchmark results with your target before considering a hardware change; the requirements alone do not establish that a newer or specific graphics card is necessary.

Rockstar’s October 29, 2019 notes for Title Update 1.15 report improved performance on high-end CPUs “when displaying large amounts of particle effects at once.” That is a narrowly described update note, not a test of large modded areas or evidence that lowering particle settings—or upgrading a CPU—will improve your particular setup. Measure your own results if particle-heavy scenes are where performance drops.
