Which PC controller should you choose for a Soulslike?
Start with the controller layout and connection method you already find natural, then confirm that the specific game supports controllers on your PC. Soulslike games often ask you to move, aim the camera, dodge, attack, and manage items in quick succession, so button placement and personal comfort matter. The sources available here do not establish that one controller improves performance, reduces latency, or fits every player.

What to check before buying
Game support and button prompts
Check the game’s own Steam listing rather than assuming that general PC compatibility guarantees the same experience in every game. Elden Ring’s Steam page lists “Full Controller Support” and Xbox Controllers. Valve cautions that “Full Controller Support does not necessarily mean that the game makes use of every feature on the controllers.” A support label therefore does not promise that a game will use every extra button or controller feature.
Steam Input and configuration
Steam Input can provide a compatibility and configuration layer, including custom button bindings and community configurations. In its June 26, 2024 update, Valve said Steam Input supported more than 300 controllers. Actual behavior depends on the game’s integration and the player’s setup; platform-level support alone does not guarantee particular button prompts or features in a specific title.

Layout and connection
Compare stick placement and face-button labeling based on what feels familiar to you; the evidence does not establish one layout as objectively better. Also check whether the exact model supports the connection method you want—wired, Bluetooth, or a 2.4 GHz receiver—and follow its official PC setup instructions. Remapping, comfort, and budget
Rear buttons may let you assign an action such as dodge, sprint, or item cycling to a button reachable without moving a thumb from a stick. Treat that as an experiment: there is no comparative test here showing that a particular mapping improves play. Consider your hand size, grip, and budget in person where possible; no comparable ergonomic testing or current price comparison is established here.

What Steam’s controller numbers do—and do not—show
Valve’s June 26, 2024 Steam Input update reported that Xbox controllers accounted for 59% of Steam controller sessions. That figure describes Steam-wide controller sessions, not Soulslike players’ choices, and it cannot tell you whether an Xbox-style layout will be comfortable for you.
In the same update, Valve wrote: “Since 2018, daily average controller use has tripled from ~5% to up to 15% of all sessions.” This is platform-wide context, not a measure of controller performance in any particular game. The update also says Steam Input enabled support for more than 300 controllers, along with custom bindings and community configurations.

How to check a Steam game’s controller support
- Open the game’s Steam store page, such as the Elden Ring listing.
- Find the controller-support information on the listing and note which controller types it names.
- Check the game’s settings and Steam Input configuration if you need to change bindings or troubleshoot input.
- Test the actual setup in the game before relying on an extra feature or a custom binding.
