Passkeys provide that protection; ordinary password autofill does not. Autofill can still help by matching a saved password to its intended website, but that is a separate safeguard. Apple Passwords with iCloud Keychain and Google Password Manager are documented built-in choices, while Android also supports third-party providers such as 1Password, Keeper, and Samsung Pass.
What “phishing-resistant autofill” actually means
Passkeys use WebAuthn public-key cryptography: a service keeps a public key, while the private key is used to authenticate without being disclosed to the service. Apple describes passkeys as resistant to phishing because they do not transmit a shared secret. Apple Support explains passkey security.
Password autofill is useful, but it is not the same protection. Chrome says its password manager matches a saved password to its intended website to help protect against phishing. That site matching can help prevent a password from being entered on an impostor page; it does not make the password itself phishing-resistant. Google’s Chrome autofill guidance.
Which password manager should you choose?
The strongest evidence here supports choosing by operating system and recovery needs, rather than treating this as a universal ranking. The documented platform-level options are:

These options are starting points, not a claim that one is best for every user. Verify that your chosen provider supports passkey creation, saving, and autofill in your specific apps and browsers, and that the needed features are included in your plan. A paid manager is not automatically required: built-in Apple and Google options are documented.
Set up passkey autofill on your devices
iPhone: Apple Passwords or another password app
- Open Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords.
- Turn on AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys, then select the password app or apps you want to use.
- Apple says iPhone can use up to three password apps as autofill sources. Confirm that the selected app supports passkeys for the accounts and services you use. Apple’s iPhone AutoFill instructions.
Android: select a passkey manager
- Open Settings > Passwords, passkeys & accounts.
- Choose the password manager you want to use and enable it to suggest passkeys.
- When a website or app offers passkeys, save them through the selected manager. Passkeys work only where the service supports them; a password manager cannot add passkey support to an incompatible site. Google’s Android passkey instructions.
Chrome on Windows or macOS: check where the passkey is stored
Chrome supports different passkey storage paths, and they do not all offer the same recovery. Google documents Windows Hello and Chrome-profile storage as local-only cases: recovery may not be available after losing the computer or deleting the Chrome profile. Google Password Manager supports cross-device use in supported contexts. On macOS, Apple Passwords can be accessed under Google’s stated account and consent conditions. Check compatibility and recovery before switching
Passkeys are not available for every application or website. Before moving away from passwords, check whether the services you rely on offer passkey sign-in and whether your chosen manager can use those passkeys in the browser and app combinations you need.

- Check device coverage: Confirm the manager supports your phone, computer, operating system, and browser.
- Understand sync: Apple says iCloud Keychain syncs credentials across approved Apple devices. Google documents cross-device use for Google Password Manager in supported contexts; confirm account and platform requirements.
- Plan for loss or deletion: Find out whether your passkeys are synchronized or stored only on one device or browser profile. A local-only passkey may be unrecoverable if that device is lost or the profile is deleted.
- Separate password and passkey behavior: Password autofill’s matching of a saved password to its intended site is valuable, but it is not equivalent to passkey authentication.
- Check plan details: Confirm the specific features you need are included in your chosen provider’s current plan; the cited platform guidance does not establish every provider’s plan limits.
