For most people who use only Apple devices, Apple Passwords is the best place to start. It handles passwords, passkeys, verification codes, autofill, sharing, and alerts about weak, reused, or known-leaked passwords. Consider a separate app if you need to use Windows, Android, or Linux, or want a particular sharing or autofill workflow.

There is no single winner for every iPhone and iPad owner. The right choice depends on which devices you use, the iOS or iPadOS version your devices run, and the app’s current features, plans, and recovery options.

Which password manager should you choose?

Option What the documented features support Worth considering if…
Apple Passwords Passwords, passkeys, verification codes, AutoFill, shared groups, AirDrop sharing, and alerts for weak, reused, or known-leaked passwords. Available starting with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, according to Apple’s Passwords guide. You mainly use Apple devices and want a built-in option.
1Password Apps and access for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux; vault and expiring-link sharing; password and passkey generation; biometric unlock; Safari autofill; and Watchtower. Its captured compatibility page specifies iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later. See 1Password’s iPhone and iPad guide and product overview. You need access across different operating systems or documented sharing workflows.
Bitwarden The captured App Store listing confirms iPhone and iPad availability, an iOS 15+ requirement, and FIDO2/WebAuthn credentials among advanced two-factor authentication options. See the Bitwarden App Store listing. You want to investigate a third-party option or use security-key authentication, after checking current plan and device details.
Dashlane Its current install page specifies iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later. Dashlane documents autofill in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and supported apps, including usernames, passwords, addresses, payments, and 2FA tokens on iOS 18+. Its help page says iOS 26 adds a more integrated way to save new passwords. See Dashlane’s iPhone and iPad install guide and autofill instructions. You prioritize mobile autofill across supported browsers and apps.
Proton Pass A 2026 editorial comparison describes it as privacy-focused and notes a free tier. See Tom’s Guide’s password-manager comparison. You want to explore a privacy-oriented candidate, while confirming its current iPhone features and plan details directly with Proton.

Is Apple Passwords good enough?

For someone who keeps their everyday devices in Apple’s ecosystem, it can be. Apple says Passwords, introduced with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, can manage passwords, passkeys, and verification codes. It also supports AutoFill, shared groups, AirDrop sharing, and alerts when passwords are weak, reused, or known to have appeared in a leak. Those features cover common needs without requiring a separate password-manager app.

Look beyond the feature checklist at how you actually work. If you need to retrieve credentials on a Windows PC, Android phone, or Linux computer, Apple’s built-in option may not suit your cross-platform routine. If you need a particular way to share credentials, compare the manager’s documented sharing tools with the people and devices involved.

When a third-party manager is a better fit

You regularly switch between operating systems

Check whether the manager offers apps or access for every device you use, not just iPhone and iPad. 1Password documents access across Apple devices, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux. That makes it a candidate for a mixed-device household or someone who works on a non-Apple computer, but the documentation alone does not establish which paid plan or limits apply.

You need a specific sharing workflow

Apple offers shared groups and AirDrop sharing. 1Password documents vault sharing and expiring links. These are different approaches; consider who needs access, whether they use the same manager, and whether you want a link that expires. Check the current product details before relying on a feature for sensitive or ongoing access.

You want autofill in more places

Dashlane documents autofill in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and supported apps. On iOS 18 and later, its supported autofill fields include usernames, passwords, addresses, payment details, and 2FA tokens. Its support documentation says iOS 26 adds a more integrated way to save new passwords. Actual behavior depends on the app, browser, and supported field.

Check compatibility before installing

The minimum operating system can rule out an app before you compare anything else. The cited 1Password page specifies iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later; Dashlane’s install page also specifies iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later. The captured Bitwarden App Store listing shows iOS 15+ as its requirement. Apple Passwords starts with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

These are the requirements shown in the cited pages, not a guarantee that every feature works identically on every supported device. Check the current App Store listing and vendor compatibility information for your device before switching, especially if you rely on a particular feature.

What to compare before you commit

  • Your devices: List every phone, tablet, and computer where you need credentials. Confirm the manager supports each operating system you use.
  • iOS and iPadOS compatibility: Compare the published minimum version with the software installed on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Autofill: Check support for Safari, any other browsers you use, and the apps where you sign in most often.
  • Passkeys and verification codes: Confirm support for the sign-in methods you use and how the manager handles them across devices.
  • Sharing: Compare group access, vault sharing, links, and any expiration controls against your household or work needs.
  • Recovery: Understand how you can regain access if you lose a device or cannot sign in to the manager account. Confirm the current recovery options with the provider before moving important credentials.
  • Plans and limits: Verify current pricing, free and paid features, device limits, and any family or sharing restrictions directly with the provider. The cited information does not establish comparable current terms for the third-party candidates.
  • Sync and account model: Make sure you are comfortable with how the provider syncs data and what account access you need. Read its current documentation rather than assuming all managers work the same way.

Do you need a hardware security key?

No. A hardware key is an optional second-factor accessory, not a requirement for using a password manager. It is useful only when the particular manager and account you want to protect support that key and authentication method. Bitwarden’s captured App Store listing includes FIDO2/WebAuthn credentials among advanced two-factor options, but that does not establish compatibility for every account or every key. Verify support before buying or setting one up.

Apple Passwords vs. Bitwarden: how to decide

Start with the practical difference: Apple Passwords is the built-in baseline for Apple-device users, while Bitwarden is a third-party candidate to investigate if you want another manager or are considering security-key authentication. The available Bitwarden listing confirms iPhone and iPad availability, an iOS 15+ requirement, and FIDO2/WebAuthn among advanced two-factor options. It does not provide enough evidence here to compare Bitwarden’s current prices, plan limits, or full feature set with Apple Passwords.
