For most older Intel Mac minis being repurposed as headless home servers, Ubuntu Server LTS is the strongest general-purpose starting point—provided the machine is Intel 64-bit and its hardware works with Linux. Choose macOS instead when you depend on Apple’s built-in sharing or Mac-only apps and your exact mini can run a suitably maintained macOS version. Identify the model before downloading anything: “older Mac mini” covers too many hardware generations for a reliable one-size-fits-all compatibility claim.
Identify your Mac mini before choosing an operating system
Open About This Mac and record the model identifier. Apple’s Mac mini model identification guide explains how to identify the machine. The identifier matters because operating-system compatibility, available memory, and hardware support vary by generation.
OpenCore Legacy Patcher’s supported-model list also relies on model identifiers and covers Intel Mac minis from Early 2009 through Late 2018. That list is useful for assessing the project’s macOS patching route, but it is not a guarantee that every model or feature will work equally well.
Which operating system should you choose?

Ubuntu Server LTS: the default for a general-purpose headless server
Canonical’s Ubuntu Server download page lists Ubuntu Server 26.04.1 LTS as the latest LTS on October 4, 2026, and supports Intel or AMD 64-bit architecture. Canonical states that Ubuntu Server LTS receives five years of free security and maintenance updates, extendable up to 15 years with Ubuntu Pro. Its release-cycle page specifies standard security maintenance for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS through May 2031 and expanded security maintenance through May 2036.

These published support dates make Ubuntu a clear choice when you want a Linux server distribution with a stated maintenance lifecycle. They do not establish that a particular Mac mini’s Wi-Fi, Ethernet, graphics, boot process, storage, or attached devices will work without extra configuration. Check compatibility for the exact model and the services you plan to run.
Native macOS: choose it for Apple-specific features and applications
macOS is a sensible fit if the server depends on Mac-only software or you value Apple’s built-in sharing and remote-access features. Apple’s Mac mini server setup guide describes using macOS to share files and enable remote access, among other uses.

Before choosing a macOS version, check support for your specific mini rather than assuming that any current release will install or remain maintained on it. The available Apple documentation here does not establish a complete current cutoff for every older model.
OpenCore Legacy Patcher: an unofficial way to extend macOS
OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) lists many Intel Mac minis, but its supported-model documentation excludes PowerPC and Apple silicon Macs and notes graphics limitations on older minis. It says 3 GB or more of RAM is required to install Sonoma and newer through its standard path; systems with 2 GB cannot use that path for Sonoma or Sequoia.

Consider OCLP only after checking your exact model and the project’s current hardware notes. Patching can preserve a macOS-centered setup, but it adds an unofficial maintenance and compatibility layer rather than restoring Apple-native support.
Check memory and workload before installing
Memory requirements depend on the installer and intended services. Canonical’s system requirements page gives figures specifically for the Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS amd64 ISO installation: 1.5 GB minimum RAM and 3 GB or more suggested. Those figures are for that release’s installation, not a general promise that every Ubuntu version or home-server workload will run well with the same amount.

Compare the mini’s available memory and storage with the server tasks you intend to run. A lightweight file or network service and a more demanding application do not have the same needs; the cited sources do not provide workload-specific performance measurements for these machines.

Canonical’s installation instructions describe downloading the ISO, creating bootable USB media, and starting the computer from it; a DVD drive is also listed as an installation option. Use suitable media you already own if available—the instructions do not establish a required USB capacity, speed, or brand.

- Confirm the model and architecture. Record the model identifier in About This Mac and confirm that your mini is Intel 64-bit before selecting Ubuntu Server.
- Download the Ubuntu Server LTS ISO. Use Canonical’s official download page and follow its current installation instructions.
- Create bootable installation media. Write the ISO to a USB flash drive, or use the DVD option if appropriate for your hardware.
- Boot from the installer and check the machine’s devices. Pay particular attention to networking and storage, since general architecture support does not guarantee every component works on a specific mini.
- Install and test the intended services. Verify the functions you need before relying on the mini as a server.
Make the choice based on the actual machine
Use Ubuntu Server LTS when you want a general-purpose Linux server and your Intel 64-bit mini’s hardware is compatible. Prefer native macOS when Apple features or Mac-only applications are central and the model has an acceptable supported release. Treat OCLP as a separate, unofficial option when retaining macOS matters enough to accept its model-specific caveats. None of the cited sources supplies a direct, same-machine performance comparison among these choices.
