What DeepSeek Harness is—and what counts as a desktop alternative
DeepSeek Harness (dsh) is an open-source agent harness developed by DeepSeek AI. Its official repository describes an “everything-is-a-plugin” architecture powered by Cordis and labels the software a developer preview, warning that compatibility-breaking changes may occur.
The documented command, npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web, starts a web UI at 127.0.0.1:3080 by default. That gives you a local browser-based workflow, but it does not make DeepSeek Harness a native desktop app. The distinction matters when comparing alternatives: some projects provide an installable graphical app, while others are local web-based control panels or coding tools with editor and command-line interfaces.

Choose OpenCode for a coding-focused desktop app
OpenCode is a coding-agent option with a desktop app documented in its README and downloads listed for macOS, Windows, and Linux. The key caveat is that the desktop app is labeled beta. Treat that status as part of the decision rather than assuming the app has the maturity of a stable release.

Choose OpenHands Agent Canvas to coordinate coding agents
Agent Canvas is best understood as a self-hosted control center for coding-agent work and developer automation. Its project describes local-by-default use, local, remote, and cloud backends, and support for both OpenHands and third-party agents. That makes it a different kind of alternative from a single native assistant: consider it when you want a place to manage agent workflows and backend choices.
Do not treat Continue as an actively maintained pick
Continue’s repository lists familiar coding workflows through its CLI, VS Code extension, and JetBrains plugin, but it also states that the repository is read-only and no longer actively maintained. That status makes it useful as a reference point for the category, not as a current first-choice recommendation.

- App form and operating system: Check whether you want a native desktop app, a local web UI, a CLI, or an editor plugin, and confirm the project documents support for your operating system.
- Task focus: Goose is described for general-purpose work; OpenCode and Agent Canvas focus on coding-agent workflows.
- Models and extensions: If provider choice or tool integration matters, compare the project’s documented model-provider and extension support. Goose specifically describes multiple model providers and MCP extensions.
- Where agents run: Agent Canvas documents local, remote, and cloud backends. Do not assume every option runs agents exclusively on your computer; verify the execution model that matters to you.
- Project status: Account for preview or beta labels and maintenance signals. DeepSeek Harness is marked developer preview, OpenCode’s desktop app is beta, and Continue is read-only and no longer actively maintained.
