Add a microSD Express card only if you need more space for digital games. A second controller is a preference, not a requirement, and extra dock or charger purchases are mainly for a second setup or replacement. Check compatibility carefully: several original Switch accessories work, but others do not.
Choose accessories by how you use the console

Nintendo includes a dock and AC adapter with the console, so those extras are not first purchases for most owners. This guide focuses on practical fit and official compatibility; it does not rank products by hands-on testing, durability, price, or stock.
What to buy first for portable play
Case and screen protector
If the console travels in a backpack or bag, a case helps protect it in transit, while a fitted screen protector guards the display. Nintendo sells a Switch 2 carrying case bundled with a screen protector and cleaning cloth. Its standard case holds up to six game cards. A licensed PowerA case is another listed option; its removable holder fits nine game cards and two microSD Express cards. These are capacity specifications, not comparative durability tests. Fit is essential: Nintendo says, “Screen protectors are not one-size-fits-all.” Protectors for the original Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite will not fit Switch 2. Check the exact model named on the package or product listing rather than relying on a generic “Nintendo Switch” label. When a storage card is worth buying
Buy a card if the space available for your digital library is becoming a constraint. Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards for storing and loading Switch 2 digital games and save data; ordinary microSD cards from the original Switch cannot do that. Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB and says an internet system update is required the first time a card is used. Confirm both the Express marking and capacity before buying. Nintendo’s accessories page states: “Please note: Nintendo Switch™ 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.”
An ordinary microSD card is not entirely useless with the new console: Nintendo says it can still be used to view captured screenshots and videos, but not to save or load Switch 2 games or save data. Should you get a Switch 2 Pro Controller?
This is an optional comfort and gameplay choice rather than a must-have. Consider it if you prefer a full-size controller for docked play, need another controller, or want features specific to the Switch 2 model. Nintendo lists HD rumble 2, motion controls, amiibo functionality, a capture button, a headset jack, a C button, and remappable GL/GR buttons. The console package already includes Joy-Con 2 controllers, so the Pro Controller makes most sense when its shape or additional controls suit how you play. The original Switch Pro Controller also pairs wirelessly with Switch 2, so an existing owner can try that controller before buying another. Choose the Switch 2 model if its system-specific buttons matter to you. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information covers older controllers.

Which original Switch accessories carry over?
Compatibility varies by accessory; “works with Switch 2” does not mean an older item attaches, charges, or performs every function the same way.
- Original Joy-Con: They can pair wirelessly but cannot attach to the Switch 2 console. To charge them, use an original Switch console or a compatible charging accessory.
- Original Pro Controller: It pairs wirelessly and can charge through a USB connection on the Switch 2 dock.
- Original dock: It is not compatible with Switch 2.
- Original Joy-Con strap: It is not compatible when used with Joy-Con 2.
- Original AC adapter: It can charge Switch 2 directly, but cannot power the console in TV mode.
Check the intended connection and use—not just the accessory name—before reusing an older item. Nintendo’s compatibility page provides the relevant item-by-item guidance.

When an extra dock or adapter makes sense
Dock set
Because a dock is included with the console, an additional dock set is mainly for placing the system at a second TV or replacing a damaged or missing dock. Do not plan to reuse an original Switch dock; Nintendo identifies it as incompatible with Switch 2.
AC adapter
An extra Switch 2 adapter is useful if you want a charger at another location or need a replacement for the included one. An original Switch adapter can charge the Switch 2 console directly, but Nintendo says it cannot power the system in TV mode. A quick buying checklist
- For portable use, check that both case and protector explicitly fit Switch 2.
- For more space for Switch 2 games, buy microSD Express—not a standard microSD card.
- Choose a second controller according to comfort and control preferences; an original Pro Controller may already meet the need.
- Skip an extra dock or adapter unless you need a second location or a replacement.
