For a store-first site, start with Shopify; for a general-purpose site, compare Wix and Squarespace; for a design-led project that needs more layout control, consider Webflow. WordPress is another option when the site’s content and customization needs justify a more involved setup. These are use-case starting points, not results of a head-to-head hands-on test.
“Mobile-friendly” can mean that a layout adapts automatically, that you can make phone-specific edits, or that you can control layouts at separate device breakpoints. Those are different capabilities. Before choosing, check the editor and preview tools available on the plan and in your country.
Which mobile website builder should you choose?
| Builder | Best starting point | What to compare before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | A business whose main job is running an online store. | Product and order workflows, the storefront’s mobile editing options, and the total cost of the plan and any required features. |
| Wix | A general-purpose site where the owner wants to compare mobile and responsive design tools. | Which changes can be made specifically for mobile, how previews work, and how much layout control the editor provides. |
| Squarespace | A design-led site or a retailer comparing ecommerce-focused builders. | Mobile layout controls alongside the store features and plan details needed for the business. |
| Webflow | A visual-design project where control over responsive layouts is a priority. | Whether its layout workflow suits the people who will build and maintain the site, and which device-specific controls are available. |
| WordPress | A content-focused site or a project whose customization needs call for a broader platform choice. | How the selected theme and tools behave on phones, who will maintain them, and the full setup and operating requirements. |
This shortlist reflects the kinds of use cases and platforms discussed in 2026 comparison coverage, including vendor-published articles from Shopify, Wix, and Squarespace. It is not an independent feature audit of every platform. TechRadar published an editorial review dated September 17, 2026, that describes its own testing; the findings here do not reproduce those tests.
What “mobile-friendly” needs to mean for your site
A page can resize to fit a phone without giving you much control over its phone layout. Conversely, an editor may offer device-specific adjustments that require extra design work. Compare the actual editing experience—not just a claim that a builder is responsive.
- Automatic adaptation: Check how text, images, navigation, and columns rearrange at phone widths.
- Mobile-specific editing: Find out whether you can alter spacing, visibility, or other elements for mobile without unintentionally changing desktop layouts.
- Breakpoint control: If you need precise responsive behavior, confirm which device widths or breakpoints the editor exposes.
- Preview and verification: Preview the site at phone sizes and test important pages, forms, navigation, and checkout on an actual phone before launch.
Match the platform to the work you need it to do
For an online store: compare operations, not just templates
A store’s mobile experience includes more than the appearance of its homepage. Compare the product and order workflows you need, as well as how the mobile storefront can be edited and checked. Shopify’s 2026 comparison covers ecommerce alongside other builder use cases; Squarespace’s comparison focuses on ecommerce and retail builders. Both are vendor-published comparisons, so treat them as feature-discovery sources rather than independent verdicts.
There is no consistent, verified price comparison here across platforms, countries, and plans. Check current plan pricing, included features, and any additional costs directly before deciding; a low starting price is not a useful comparison if essential store functions require more.
For a general-purpose site: weigh editing ease against flexibility
For a small business, portfolio, or service site, compare how quickly you can produce a polished phone layout with how much control you retain when the layout needs adjustment. Wix’s vendor-authored 2026 comparisons address mobile and responsive builders, while Squarespace also publishes a 2026 builder comparison. Their descriptions can help identify features to inspect, but do not establish an independent ranking.
For design-led work: inspect responsive controls before choosing
If the visual arrangement needs to change deliberately across screen sizes, test the builder’s responsive editing workflow before building the full site. Determine whether you can preview and adjust the relevant layouts, and whether the people maintaining the site can use those controls confidently. A flexible editor is useful only if its workflow fits the project.

For content-heavy projects: assess the ongoing setup
WordPress appears among the platforms in Shopify’s 2026 comparison shortlist. For a content-focused project, make the choice around the publishing and customization workflow you need, then assess the mobile behavior of the particular theme and tools you intend to use. The platform name alone does not establish how a finished site will behave on phones.
A practical selection process
- Write down the site’s main job. Separate selling products from publishing content, presenting a portfolio, or generating service inquiries.
- List the mobile tasks that matter. Include the pages visitors must use on a phone, such as product pages, navigation, forms, or checkout.
- Try the editor with a representative page. Check automatic adaptation, phone-specific editing, breakpoint controls, and preview options rather than relying on a template’s demo.
- Compare the operating workflow. For a store, inspect product and order tasks; for other sites, consider how the owner will update and maintain content.
- Check the current local plan details. Confirm price, included features, and availability for your country directly with the provider. These details can vary and are not established consistently across the comparison coverage cited here.
- Test before launch. Review key pages at phone widths and complete the site’s important tasks on a phone, including a test purchase if the site sells online.
How to read 2026 builder comparisons
Platform comparisons are useful for discovering candidates and features, but their perspective matters. Shopify, Wix, and Squarespace publish comparisons in a category where they sell products. TechRadar’s September 17, 2026 review is editorial coverage and reports testing by that publisher, but its tests are not independently repeated here. No hands-on, like-for-like ranking is claimed in this article.
Rank #4
One example sometimes surfaced in Shopify’s 2026 comparison is UroTuning, which Shopify reports saw increases of 50% in both sales and conversion after moving to Shopify. That is a vendor-published merchant example, not an independently established result or a typical outcome to expect from changing builders.
