The best mobile scanning OCR apps for iOS and Android depend on your workflow: Adobe Scan is the strongest general-purpose choice, Google Drive is the easiest free Google option, Genius Scan is the privacy-oriented paid pick, OneDrive replaces Microsoft Lens, and Apple Notes is best for occasional iPhone and iPad scans.
There is no universal OCR winner. The right app depends on whether you need a searchable PDF, editable Word or Excel output, offline processing, local storage, batch scanning, business-card extraction, or a cloud filing system.
Important 2026 update: Microsoft Lens is no longer a current recommendation. Microsoft removed Lens from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store on February 9, 2026, and disabled new scans in existing installations after March 9, 2026. Microsoft recommends OneDrive as the replacement, but Microsoft says OneDrive does not support saving scans locally on the device. See Microsoft’s Lens retirement notice.

- Adobe Scan is the best general-purpose cross-platform choice when searchable PDFs, Acrobat workflows, and Office exports matter.
- Google Drive creates searchable PDFs on iOS and Android and is the simplest free option for users already storing documents in Drive.
- Genius Scan’s publisher says its Ultra plan provides on-device OCR, making it the strongest privacy-oriented paid option in this comparison.
- OneDrive is Microsoft’s official Lens replacement, but Microsoft says scanned files cannot be saved locally on the device.
- Searchable PDF OCR adds a text layer to a page image; searchable does not mean that the OCR text or editable layout is perfectly accurate.
What should an OCR scanning app actually do?
An OCR scanning app may combine several different technologies, and the terms are not interchangeable. Before comparing apps, decide which result you need.

| Capability | What it does | Typical result | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camera scanning | Captures a page, detects edges, corrects perspective, and improves contrast or lighting. | JPEG, PNG, or image-based PDF | Recognized or searchable text |
| Searchable PDF OCR | Keeps the page image and adds an invisible text layer. | A PDF in which text can be searched, selected, or copied | Faithful reconstruction of the original layout |
| Editable OCR export | Converts recognized text into a document or spreadsheet. | DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, or text file | Accurate columns, tables, line breaks, fonts, or page boundaries |
| Live text extraction | Extracts text from a photograph for immediate copying. | Clipboard text | A structured PDF or editable document |
| Document management | Adds naming, folders, tags, sync, sharing, backups, encryption, or retention controls. | An organized document library | Local-only storage or private processing |
A scan can be searchable while still containing OCR mistakes. A DOCX export can be editable while badly rearranging the original page. Keep the original scanned PDF or image as the authoritative visual copy, especially for contracts, tax records, medical records, identification, and legal documents.
Which mobile scanning OCR app is best for each use case?
| Use case | Best starting point | Why | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| General-purpose scanning on iOS and Android | Adobe Scan | OCR-focused capture with PDF and JPEG output and a wider Acrobat workflow. | Advanced editing and export features depend on a paid Adobe plan. |
| Free searchable PDFs | Google Drive | Creates searchable PDFs directly in Drive on iOS and Android. | Cloud-first storage is not ideal for local-only privacy. |
| Privacy-oriented OCR | Genius Scan Ultra | The publisher describes on-device text recognition and enhanced security features. | OCR and many advanced features are paid. |
| Microsoft Lens migration | OneDrive | Microsoft’s officially recommended replacement and a natural fit for Microsoft 365 users. | Scans cannot be saved locally on the device, according to Microsoft. |
| Occasional iPhone or iPad scans | Apple Notes or Files | Already installed and quick for a few pages. | Less specialized for high-volume OCR document management. |
| Dedicated cross-platform alternative | SwiftScan or CamScanner | Credible alternatives with dedicated scanning and paid OCR/document features. | Current prices, limits, privacy terms, and platform features must be checked before subscribing. |
| Dedicated iPhone workflow | Scanner Pro | A polished iOS-focused scanning and OCR alternative. | Android availability is a critical limitation to verify. |
Why is Adobe Scan the best general-purpose choice?
Adobe Scan is the best starting point for readers who want a cross-platform scanner that can lead into Adobe Acrobat. Adobe’s US App Store listing and Google Play listing describe mobile scanning, OCR, PDF and JPEG output, and export workflows involving Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Adobe Scan suits invoices, receipts, forms, notes, and multi-page documents when the final destination is a searchable PDF or an Acrobat workflow. Automatic boundary detection and image enhancement help produce a cleaner document than an unprocessed camera photo.
Adobe Scan’s most important limitation is the boundary between free scanning and paid document work. Advanced editing and export capabilities can require an Acrobat-related subscription. The US App Store listing showed Adobe Scan Premium at $9.99 per month; that is a store-specific price snapshot, not a universal or permanent price. Check the plan, country, store, and billing term before purchasing through Adobe’s Acrobat plans.
Adobe’s current iOS listing says the app requires iOS 18.0 or later. Operating-system requirements are volatile and may differ by app version or region, so check the live store listing before recommending or installing it.
Choose Adobe Scan if: you need searchable PDFs and may later edit, sign, organize, or export documents through Acrobat. Choose something else if: local-only processing, no account, or a one-time purchase is more important than Adobe integration.
Is Google Drive the best free OCR scanner?
Google Drive is the best free built-in-style option for people who already use Google Drive or Google Workspace. Google’s official documentation says its scanner creates searchable PDFs and supports controls such as cropping, rotating, filters, cleanup, adding pages, and choosing PDF or JPG output.
Google Drive is convenient rather than highly specialized. A scan can go directly into a selected Drive folder, which is useful for receipts, invoices, school notes, and occasional forms. Google says Drive content is not used for advertising, but scans are still stored in Google Drive and governed by the user’s account, cloud-storage, sharing, and retention setup. Google Drive is not a local-only scanner.
Google’s scanner documentation emphasizes searchable PDF output rather than a direct DOCX or XLSX conversion workflow. If the goal is an editable Office document or structured spreadsheet, Adobe Scan with the relevant paid workflow—or a dedicated OCR service that explicitly supports that format—may be a better fit.

Is Genius Scan the best privacy-oriented OCR app?
Genius Scan is the strongest privacy-oriented paid candidate in this comparison because its publisher specifically describes on-device text recognition in the Ultra plan. On-device OCR can reduce the need to send document images to a remote OCR server, although users should still inspect sync, export, backup, and account settings.
The publisher describes Genius Scan Basic as free, unlimited, high-resolution, and watermark-free. The same official pricing page lists OCR, cloud exports, enhanced security, organization, backups, and web access among Ultra features. The listed Ultra price was $39.99 per year, while Teams pricing was shown as $40 to $20 per license per year depending on quantity. Prices and availability can change by country, platform, and billing channel.
Genius Scan is a good choice for sensitive paperwork, frequent scanning, batch capture, and users who want a dedicated document workflow rather than a general cloud-storage app. The publisher also describes automatic deletion after export and a Business Associate Agreement option for teams. Those are vendor claims; a BAA option is not the same as blanket HIPAA compliance for every user, configuration, or organization.
Choose Genius Scan if: on-device OCR, document organization, and privacy controls justify paying for Ultra. Choose Basic if: you need watermark-free scanning but can live without the paid OCR and cloud features.
What should Microsoft Lens users use now?
Microsoft Lens is retired. Microsoft removed Lens from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store on February 9, 2026, and existing installations could create scans only until March 9, 2026; new scans were disabled after that date. Old comparison articles that present Lens as a current free recommendation are outdated. Microsoft’s retirement documentation directs users to OneDrive.
OneDrive is the most direct Microsoft 365 migration path. Open OneDrive, tap +, select Scan photo, capture the document, and save it to the desired OneDrive location. Microsoft explicitly says OneDrive does not support saving scans locally on the device, so OneDrive is not a feature-for-feature replacement for people whose Lens workflow depended on local files.
Historically, Lens offered modes such as Whiteboard, Document, Business Card, and Actions, and its documentation described OCR and Office exports. Those historical capabilities explain why former Lens users may notice differences after moving to OneDrive, but they should not be treated as current Lens functionality. OneDrive is best for users who accept cloud storage and already organize work in Microsoft 365.

What is the best no-install scanner on an iPhone?
Apple Notes or Files is the best no-download option for occasional iPhone and iPad scans. Apple’s official support material confirms document scanning in Notes. The built-in workflow is convenient for a form, receipt, homework page, or signed document that will remain in the Apple ecosystem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApple’s built-in tools should not automatically be treated as a full OCR document-management system. Dedicated apps generally offer more deliberate batch capture, page ordering, compression, naming, cloud connectors, export formats, and document libraries. Use Notes or Files when convenience matters more than automation and high-volume organization.
Apple’s text-recognition tools may help copy text from an image where supported, but live text extraction is different from creating a carefully structured, searchable PDF or an editable DOCX. Verify the language, device, operating-system, and document support for the specific Apple feature being used.
Which apps work on both iOS and Android?
Adobe Scan, Google Drive, Genius Scan, SwiftScan, CamScanner, and OneDrive offer versions for both iOS and Android. Cross-platform branding does not prove feature parity: OCR languages, export formats, local saving, subscription prices, menu labels, and operating-system requirements can differ between platforms.
| App | iOS | Android | Searchable PDF | Editable export | Offline or on-device OCR | Storage model | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Scan | Yes; current listing says iOS 18 or later | Yes | Yes, OCR-oriented | Word, Excel, and PowerPoint described in listings; plan-dependent | Not established as a universal offline feature in the supplied sources | Adobe account and Acrobat ecosystem may be involved | General-purpose PDF workflows |
| Google Drive | Yes | Yes | Yes; Google says scans are searchable PDFs | Not the central documented scanner workflow | Do not assume offline OCR | Google Drive cloud storage | Free, occasional scanning for Google users |
| Genius Scan | Yes | Yes | OCR listed with Ultra | Advanced exports listed with Ultra; verify exact formats | On-device text recognition listed with Ultra | Local scanning plus paid cloud/export features | Privacy-oriented dedicated scanning |
| OneDrive | Yes | Yes | Cloud document workflow; verify current OCR output | Not a stated feature-for-feature Lens replacement | Do not assume offline OCR | OneDrive; local device saving for scans is not supported | Microsoft 365 users |
| Apple Notes/Files | Yes | No | Useful scan capture; verify searchable-PDF behavior for the exact workflow | No dedicated Office conversion workflow | Device features vary | Apple ecosystem or chosen local/cloud destination | Occasional iPhone and iPad scans |
| SwiftScan | Yes | Yes | Verify current plan and platform listing | Verify current plan and platform listing | Verify current behavior | Verify local and cloud options | Dedicated cross-platform alternative |
| CamScanner | Yes | Yes | Verify current plan and platform listing | Paid OCR and document features are marketed; verify exact formats | Verify current behavior | Cloud-centric features are available; review settings | Recognizable commercial alternative |
SwiftScan and CamScanner are included as alternatives, not as unqualified winners. Their current store listings, OCR limits, prices, permissions, privacy disclosures, and subscription structures should be checked at publication time.

Which app exports scans to Word or Excel?
Adobe Scan is the clearest candidate in the supplied evidence for editable Office export: its iOS and Android store listings describe export to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but access can depend on an Adobe subscription and account workflow.
Google Drive’s official scanning documentation focuses on searchable PDF creation, not direct DOCX or XLSX conversion. OneDrive is Microsoft’s replacement path for Lens, but the retirement documentation does not establish that OneDrive reproduces Lens’s historical Office-export workflow. Genius Scan offers advanced OCR and exports under Ultra, but the exact target formats should be checked in the current plan and app version.
| Output | What to verify | Practical warning |
|---|---|---|
| Whether the PDF is image-only or searchable | A PDF extension alone says nothing about OCR. | |
| Searchable PDF | Whether a text layer is created and which languages are supported | Search results can still contain recognition errors. |
| DOCX | Whether export is included in the free or paid plan | Columns, fonts, tables, and line breaks may move. |
| XLSX | Whether tables are extracted as cells rather than plain text | Receipts and irregular tables often need manual cleanup. |
| TXT | Whether plain-text export is available | Plain text discards visual layout. |
| JPEG or PNG | Whether the original image can be retained | Image output preserves appearance but is not inherently searchable. |
| vCard | Whether business-card fields are extracted | Names, phone numbers, and addresses should be checked manually. |
| PDF/A or password-protected PDF | Whether archival or security features are included | Do not assume every “PDF export” supports these formats. |
Editable output is a derivative, not a replacement for the original. Keep the original scan and proofread account numbers, dates, totals, names, addresses, medical details, and legal language.
How good is OCR in mobile scanning apps?
No universal OCR accuracy winner can be named responsibly without a controlled test using the same pages, phones, lighting, languages, and review method. OCR quality varies with printed versus handwritten text, font size, lighting, page curvature, skew, tables, columns, resolution, language, mathematical notation, colored text, photographs, and whether recognition occurs on-device or in the cloud.

Printed, high-contrast, flat pages usually produce more dependable results than cursive handwriting, equations, faint photocopies, glossy pages, stamps, signatures, or text over photographs. Handwriting recognition should be described as a capability to test—not as a promise of accurate transcription.
Searchable PDF OCR is not faithful document reconstruction. A PDF may be easy to search while the invisible text layer contains errors, and an editable Word file may have poor formatting even when most words are correct.
Which app is best for receipts, forms, books, and business cards?
| Document type | Prioritize | Useful app direction | Common failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Receipts | Small-text OCR, automatic cropping, batch capture, searchable PDFs, low file size, and cloud filing. | Adobe Scan, Google Drive, or a dedicated scanner such as Genius Scan. | Totals, dates, and merchant names can be misread. |
| Forms | Perspective correction, clear PDF output, page reordering, local export, and fill-and-sign support. | Adobe Scan for Acrobat workflows; Apple Notes or Files for a quick capture. | Checkboxes, lines, and fields may not survive editable conversion cleanly. |
| Books and multi-page packets | Batch capture, page numbering, fast capture, compression, searchable OCR, and reliable page detection. | Genius Scan or another dedicated scanner; Adobe Scan for Acrobat users. | Curved pages, shadows near the binding, and missed pages reduce OCR quality. |
| Whiteboards and handwritten notes | Glare and shadow reduction, background cleanup, legibility enhancement, and image export. | Use a scanner with strong image cleanup, but treat handwriting OCR as experimental. | Cursive writing, equations, glare, and faint marker strokes are difficult to recognize. |
| Business cards | Contact-field extraction, vCard export, language support, deduplication, and retention controls. | Verify the current business-card features of the chosen app; historical Lens modes are not current Lens availability. | Names, job titles, phone numbers, and addresses can be assigned to the wrong fields. |
Can mobile scanning apps work offline?
“Works offline” is not one feature. An app may capture a page without internet but still require a connection for OCR, account authentication, cloud upload, or export.
- Offline capture: Can the camera take and temporarily hold the page?
- Offline enhancement: Can edge detection, rotation, and cleanup run without a connection?
- Offline OCR: Is text recognized on the device?
- Offline export: Can the result be saved to local storage or shared without signing in?
- Reconnect behavior: Will the app upload a queued document automatically when connectivity returns?
Genius Scan’s pricing page explicitly describes on-device text recognition in Ultra, so Genius Scan is the best-supported candidate here for privacy-sensitive or offline-oriented OCR. Do not infer offline operation for Adobe Scan, Google Drive, OneDrive, SwiftScan, or CamScanner merely because the camera opens without an internet connection; verify the current app documentation and settings.
How private are mobile OCR scanning apps?
Privacy depends on the processing and storage model, not just on whether an app has a privacy policy. Before scanning sensitive documents, check the following:
- Does OCR run on the device or on a vendor’s server?
- Is an account required for capture, OCR, or export?
- Does the app automatically upload scans?
- Can the user save a copy locally?
- Are files encrypted in transit and at rest?
- Is there a biometric app lock?
- Can documents, backups, and shared links be deleted?
- Does the vendor describe retention, advertising, or service-improvement use?
- Are business controls or a contractual agreement available for organizational use?
Google says Drive content is not used for advertising, but Google Drive remains a cloud service rather than a local-only scanner. Disable automatic upload or choose a local workflow where the app supports that option, and inspect what happens when the phone reconnects.
Genius Scan’s publisher advertises privacy features, on-device OCR in Ultra, automatic deletion after export, enhanced security, and a Business Associate Agreement option for teams. These statements should be treated as vendor claims, not independent security certification. Adobe’s App Store listing includes developer-provided privacy disclosures, and Apple notes that Apple has not verified those disclosures.
For passports, identity cards, financial statements, medical records, or confidential business paperwork, do not share a public link merely because the scan is convenient to access. Confirm the destination folder, sharing permissions, backups, and deletion behavior.
How can you make OCR more accurate?
- Use bright, even lighting and avoid glare.
- Keep the phone parallel to the page rather than photographing at an angle.
- Fill the frame without cutting off page edges.
- Place the document on a dark, contrasting background.
- Flatten book pages and keep fingers, clips, and shadows away from the text.
- Capture one language at a time where possible and select the correct OCR language.
- Review automatic edge detection before adding the page.
- Use cleanup or contrast tools on faint photocopies, but compare the enhanced image with the original.
- Proofread every critical field after OCR.
- Retain the original scan even after exporting to DOCX, XLSX, or TXT.
Do not rely on OCR alone for contracts, tax information, medical records, addresses, account numbers, signatures, or legal documents. OCR errors can be visually subtle and materially important.

How should you choose between free and paid OCR scanning apps?
Choose a free or built-in option when you scan only a few pages, need a basic PDF, and already use Apple Notes, Google Drive, OneDrive, or Adobe’s free capture workflow. Pay for a dedicated plan when document volume, OCR export, batch organization, on-device processing, cloud connectors, backups, signing, or team administration saves enough time to justify the recurring cost.
| Your priority | Likely choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional pages with no new subscription | Apple Notes/Files or Google Drive | Both are convenient built-in-style choices on their supported platforms. |
| Searchable PDFs plus Acrobat editing | Adobe Scan with an appropriate Acrobat plan | The Adobe workflow extends beyond capture and OCR. |
| On-device OCR and privacy controls | Genius Scan Ultra | The publisher specifically lists on-device text recognition and paid security/export features. |
| Microsoft 365 storage | OneDrive | It is Microsoft’s official Lens replacement, but it is cloud-centered. |
| Large document batches | A dedicated scanner app | Batch capture, page management, compression, naming, and export matter more than a basic camera scan. |
| Editable spreadsheets | An app that explicitly supports XLSX/table extraction | Searchable PDF and plain OCR text do not automatically produce usable spreadsheet cells. |
App-store prices, free-tier limits, operating-system requirements, OCR languages, and export features can change by country, platform, app version, introductory offer, and billing channel. Check the live store listing and official pricing page immediately before subscribing.
Bottom line: which mobile OCR scanner should you install?
Install Adobe Scan for the broadest general-purpose PDF and OCR workflow, especially if Acrobat is already part of your work. Choose Google Drive for free, straightforward searchable PDFs filed directly in Drive. Choose Genius Scan if on-device OCR and privacy-oriented controls are worth paying for. Choose OneDrive if you are migrating from Microsoft Lens and accept cloud-only scan storage. Choose Apple Notes or Files when you use an iPhone or iPad and only need occasional scans.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free OCR scanner app?
Google Drive is the best free starting point for users who want searchable PDFs saved directly to Google Drive on iOS or Android. Apple Notes or Files is convenient for occasional iPhone and iPad scans, while Adobe Scan offers free OCR-oriented scanning but reserves some advanced editing and export features for paid Acrobat-related plans.
Can I scan documents without internet?
Some apps can capture pages offline, but offline capture does not prove that OCR, export, account authentication, or storage also work offline. Genius Scan is the clearest candidate in the supplied evidence because its publisher specifically lists on-device text recognition in the Ultra plan; verify the current behavior and settings before scanning sensitive files.
Which app converts a scan to Word or Excel?
Adobe Scan’s iOS and Android listings describe export to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but the feature can depend on an Adobe subscription and account workflow. Google Drive’s documented scanner workflow focuses on searchable PDFs, and any DOCX or XLSX result should be checked for altered tables, columns, line breaks, and formatting.
Recommended Free Tools
Is Microsoft Lens still available?
Microsoft Lens is no longer a current option. Microsoft removed Lens from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store on February 9, 2026, and disabled new scans in existing installations after March 9, 2026. Microsoft recommends OneDrive, but Microsoft says OneDrive does not save scans locally on the device.
Can OCR accurately read handwriting?
Handwriting OCR is generally less reliable than printed-text OCR, especially with cursive writing, unusual styles, equations, faint ink, and overlapping marks. Treat handwriting recognition as a feature to test and proofread the result rather than as a faithful transcription.
The Bottom Line
Best overall: Adobe Scan. Best free Google workflow: Google Drive. Best privacy-oriented paid option: Genius Scan Ultra. Best Microsoft Lens replacement: OneDrive, with the important limitation that scans cannot be saved locally. Best no-install iPhone option: Apple Notes or Files.
