For the fewest apps, Punkt MP02 is the strictest choice: it does not allow app installation or sideloading. For a more capable E Ink phone that can run some Android apps, consider Mudita Kompakt, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Mudita Pure offers the clearest built-in notification controls, including a mode that turns off all notifications.
These are different compromises, not a universal ranking. The device facts below come from manufacturer product and support pages; they are not independent tests of reliability or effects on screen time.
Which minimalist phone has the fewest apps?
The Punkt MP02 is the most restrictive of these three for adding apps. Punkt says it supports neither app installation nor sideloading; only Punkt-authorized apps are supported. Its focus is voice, text, tethering and the Pigeon messenger, which uses the Signal Protocol. Punkt says Pigeon is available only on the MP02. Punkt’s MP02 FAQ explains the app limitation and messaging availability.
The other two phones make different trade-offs: Mudita Pure does not support external apps, while Mudita Kompakt has no app store but permits Android app sideloading through Mudita Center.

Can I still use maps and banking apps?
Maps
Mudita lists offline maps on the Kompakt, making it the clearest option here if you need maps without relying on a separate device. Punkt says the MP02 has GPS but does not provide conventional navigation or location-based services; GPS alone is not a maps app. Mudita Pure’s cited product page does not list maps, so do not assume it can replace a navigation phone.

Banking, authentication and work apps
The MP02 cannot install apps, and the Pure does not support external apps. The Kompakt can sideload Android apps, but Mudita warns that apps designed for other displays may work inconsistently on E Ink and apps that depend on Google Services may not work as expected. Mudita does not guarantee third-party compatibility. Before switching, confirm that every essential banking, authentication, transit and work app is usable on the exact phone you plan to buy.
How do I stop notifications without giving up calls and texts?
Mudita Pure has the most explicit notification controls described by its manufacturer. Its Do Not Disturb mode can suppress all notifications or whitelist favorite contacts. It also has a message-only mode that checks for texts periodically but does not accept incoming calls. That mode is not a substitute for normal call availability.

![Light Phone II [Light Gray] 4G Volte Phone, Minimalist Phone for Calling & Texting, Bluetooth, WiFi, Personal Hotspot…](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/31Id1+oPeSL._SL160_.jpg)
- The Light Phone II is currently compatible with certain carriers in the US. Compatible carriers include: LIGHT, AT&T, T-MOBILE, VERIZON (except prepaid plans and Numbershare), TING, MINT, US MOBILE. It will not work with carriers that are not listed.
- Standalone minimalist phone that can be used to call and text. Group texting is supported
- The Light Phone II is built around a user-customizable menu of tools. All of the tools are custom-designed for our LightOS to ensure a thoughtful, and private user experience. Available tools currently include an alarm, a calculator, directions, a simple music player, notes/voice memo, calendar and a podcasts tool. The phone also supports hotspot tethering. We'll continue to release other utility-oriented tools, which will be available with software updates.
On the Punkt MP02, notifications are hidden while the phone is locked and become visible after you unlock it. This changes when you see alerts; it is not the same as the Pure’s option to turn off all notifications. The Kompakt’s cited product information describes an offline mode, but does not establish an equivalent notification whitelist or all-alert suppression control.
Which phone fits which kind of minimalist?
Choose Punkt MP02 if app restriction is the priority
Its no-installation policy makes it the strongest fit for someone who wants to avoid adding apps altogether and is comfortable with a keypad and a narrower set of functions. It includes voice, text, tethering and Pigeon, but not conventional navigation. Its battery is non-removable, according to Punkt’s FAQ.

Choose Mudita Kompakt if you want a few smartphone-like tools
The Kompakt keeps an E Ink display and offline mode while offering offline maps, a camera and optional Android app sideloading. It is a better match if those tools matter and you accept that sideloaded apps may be inconsistent. Mudita identifies Global and North America variants and says the North America model is tailored for reliable use in the US and Canada; select the appropriate regional version and check carrier support before purchase. Mudita also lists a two-year warranty and five years of software and security updates on its product page; verify that those terms still apply to the model being sold.
Choose Mudita Pure if notification controls matter more than apps
The Pure combines physical keys with explicit modes for connected use, Do Not Disturb and offline operation. It rules out a camera, browser and external apps, so it suits someone willing to accept substantial limits in exchange for fewer ways to be interrupted. Its current sales and support status should be confirmed before treating it as readily available.

Will a minimalist phone work with my carrier?
Carrier support depends on the exact regional model, network bands, VoLTE support and local coverage—not just the phone name. Punkt’s product page lists the following US status for the MP02:
| US carrier | Punkt’s listed status for MP02 |
|---|---|
| AT&T | Supported/verified |
| T-Mobile | Supported, but not supported for VoLTE |
| Verizon | Unsupported |
These are Punkt’s stated statuses, not a guarantee of service at a particular address or a substitute for checking current carrier requirements. See the MP02 product page, then confirm compatibility with your carrier before buying. For the Mudita phones, verify the precise regional SKU and carrier support rather than assuming a model marketed for one region will work everywhere.
Quick Recap
What to check before switching
- List the apps and services you rely on, especially banking, two-factor authentication, navigation, transit and work tools, and verify each one on the specific model.
- Check the exact regional version, supported bands and VoLTE requirements with the carrier you use.
- Decide whether your priority is no app installation, selective sideloading, or notification filtering; those are distinct capabilities.
- Confirm current stock, pricing, warranty terms and software-support commitments on the manufacturer’s live listing. Availability and prices are not established by the cited product information here.
