The best OneDrive alternative depends on what you want to improve: collaboration, privacy, Apple integration, or backup and recovery. Google Drive and Dropbox are natural places to start for shared work; Proton Drive and Sync.com suit readers prioritizing private file storage; iCloud Drive fits Apple households; and IDrive is worth considering when device backup matters more than live collaboration. None is a universal winner, and “secure” can mean different things—from account protection to end-to-end encryption.

This shortlist compares eight services by their strongest fit, while noting where current plan details or capabilities need confirmation. OneDrive remains a useful baseline: Microsoft currently advertises a 5 GB free account, Personal Vault, ransomware detection and recovery, file sharing, and access across devices on its OneDrive product page. Product limits and prices can change; check the provider’s current terms before switching.

How to choose a secure OneDrive alternative

Start with your main job for cloud storage. A service built around live document collaboration is not necessarily the best place for private archives, and a backup service is not automatically a replacement for a folder that syncs across your devices.

  • Encryption and access: Find out whether files are end-to-end encrypted, who controls the keys, and what the provider says it can access. Vendor statements describe the vendor’s position; they are not, by themselves, independent security audits.
  • Account protection: Check available sign-in safeguards, such as two-factor authentication, and secure your account recovery methods. Encryption does not prevent someone with access to your account from misusing files the account can open.
  • Sharing controls: Look for link permissions, passwords, and expiration options if you share sensitive files. Confirm whether those controls are included in the plan you intend to use.
  • Recovery: Compare version history, deleted-file recovery, and backup snapshots. These features can help with accidental changes or deletion, but their availability and retention periods vary by plan.
  • Workflow and migration: Consider whether you rely on Office or Google editors, shared folders, mobile access, or a particular operating system. Moving files is only part of a switch; replacing collaboration and shared links can take more effort.

Before migrating, check support for your devices, the current storage limit and price, and whether the service syncs working files, backs up devices, or offers both. The comparisons below describe fit, not a head-to-head security ranking.

Eight OneDrive alternatives at a glance

Service Best fit What to weigh
Google Drive Google users and collaborative document work Review current storage-sharing rules and plan terms; its main advantage is the Google ecosystem.
Dropbox General-purpose file syncing and sharing Check current plan limits and whether its collaboration features match your workflow.
iCloud Drive People already using Apple devices and services Confirm platform support and current iCloud+ storage tiers before moving files.
pCloud Personal storage, including buyers comparing subscription and lifetime plans It does not include a built-in document editor, according to TechRadar’s August 13, 2026 comparison; verify optional encryption features and plan terms.
Sync.com Readers seeking private file storage, sync, and controlled sharing Confirm current plan-level encryption, sharing, and version-history details; collaboration may rely on Microsoft 365 integration.
Proton Drive Privacy-focused storage and sharing Proton describes end-to-end encryption, but that is the provider’s claim; check current storage and feature entitlements.
IDrive Backup and recovery across devices Backup is its relevant strength; it is not a direct substitute for every OneDrive live-collaboration workflow.
MEGA A further cloud-storage option to compare Verify present encryption scope, storage, pricing, and collaboration capabilities directly before choosing.

Google’s Drive product page is the place to confirm its current service framing. For third-party context, TechRadar’s comparison was last updated August 13, 2026; its observations are editorial rather than vendor guarantees: TechRadar’s cloud-storage comparison.

Google Drive: for Google workflows and collaboration

Google Drive is the most obvious option if your files already live in Google’s ecosystem or you depend on Google’s document tools and shared-work workflows. It is a collaboration-oriented alternative rather than a privacy-first choice established by the cited product information here.

Before moving, check Google’s current storage rules, how storage is shared across its services, and which plan terms apply in your region. Start with the official Google Drive page; do not assume that a familiar free tier or a past price remains available.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Dropbox: for mainstream syncing and sharing

Dropbox is a mainstream option for syncing files and sharing them with others. It may suit someone who wants a conventional cloud-file workflow without making a switch specifically for end-to-end encryption or backup snapshots.

Compare the current plan’s storage, sharing controls, version history, and device support with the way you use OneDrive. The available comparison does not establish a current speed ranking, so choose based on verified features and your own workflow rather than unsupported claims about which service syncs fastest.

iCloud Drive: for Apple-centered households

iCloud Drive is a sensible candidate if you already use Apple devices and want files to fit into that environment. Its appeal is strongest when your daily work is Apple-centered; it is less of an automatic choice for a mixed-device household or a team built around Microsoft or Google tools.

Rank #3
Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Confirm the current iCloud+ storage tiers and how well the service supports every non-Apple device you use on Apple’s official documentation before migrating. The third-party comparison cited here is not a substitute for current Apple plan or compatibility details.

pCloud: for personal storage and plan flexibility

pCloud is positioned for personal storage and advertises subscription and lifetime plan choices. Its official plans page is the appropriate place to check current pricing and terms. A lifetime option changes the payment model, but it does not remove the need to verify what the plan includes and how the provider handles access and recovery.

TechRadar’s August 13, 2026 comparison notes that pCloud lacks a built-in document editor. If you often co-edit documents, that can mean keeping a separate editing workflow. Also check whether an optional encryption feature is included in the plan you are considering and what it covers; do not infer protection scope from the word “secure.”

Rank #4
Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Sync.com: for private file sharing and sync

Sync.com is worth comparing if private file storage, syncing, and controlled sharing are central to your decision. TechRadar’s August 13, 2026 comparison describes end-to-end encryption, two-factor authentication, password and expiry controls for sharing, and version history. Those details should be checked against Sync.com’s current product information, particularly because features can differ by plan.

TechRadar describes Sync.com collaboration through Microsoft 365 integration. That may be useful if you already work in Office, but it is a different workflow from having a built-in document editor. Confirm the current integration and sharing behavior before replacing shared OneDrive folders.

Proton Drive: for privacy-focused storage

Proton Drive is the clearest privacy-led choice in this shortlist based on the provider’s published description. Proton says files and names are encrypted on-device before upload and that Proton cannot access them. Its product page puts the claim this way: “Proton Drive’s end-to-end encrypted cloud storage ensures no one but you and the people you choose can access your files. Not even Proton.” This is Proton’s product-page wording, not independent validation of the claim.

IDrive: for backup and recovery

IDrive belongs on the list for readers whose priority is backing up devices and recovering files, rather than reproducing every OneDrive collaboration feature. TechRadar’s August 13, 2026 comparison frames it as a backup-led service, with snapshots, versions, and recovery among the relevant strengths.

Distinguish a backup from sync when evaluating it. Sync keeps working files available across devices; a backup is intended to preserve recoverable copies. A service can offer overlapping functions, but do not assume that a synced deletion or unwanted change can be recovered for the period you need. Check IDrive’s current retention and device coverage before relying on it.

MEGA: verify the details that matter to you

MEGA is another cloud-storage option, but the available information here does not establish enough current detail to make categorical claims about its encryption, free capacity, plan pricing, or collaboration limitations. Verify those specifics on MEGA’s own current product and help pages before deciding, and compare them against the same checklist: who can access the files, what sharing controls are available, how recovery works, and whether it supports your devices and editing workflow.

How to switch without losing your workflow

  1. Inventory what OneDrive does for you. List the devices and folders it syncs, shared links and folders, Office workflows, and any recovery or Personal Vault use you rely on.
  2. Choose a service by primary job. Favor a collaboration ecosystem for shared document work, a privacy-oriented service for end-to-end encrypted storage, or a backup-led option if device recovery is your priority.
  3. Verify current terms. On the provider’s official pages, check plan price and billing period in your region, storage, device support, encryption scope, sharing controls, and recovery/version history. The product facts in this article were checked October 7, 2026 where specifically dated; volatile plan details should be rechecked when you sign up.
  4. Test with a small folder. Install the relevant desktop or mobile apps, upload a representative set of files, and test access from each device you use. Check file names, sharing permissions, editing, and recovery before moving your full library.
  5. Move shared work deliberately. Recreate shared folders and invite collaborators in the new service. Old links may not function as new-service links, so update recipients rather than assuming a migration carries permissions across.
  6. Keep a separate copy until verified. Confirm the new service has uploaded the files you expect and that you can open them before deleting the originals. For important data, retain an independent backup rather than treating one sync account as the only copy.

Which alternative should you choose?

Choose Google Drive if Google collaboration is the reason you are leaving; Dropbox if you want a mainstream sync-and-sharing option; iCloud Drive if your devices and workflow are Apple-centered; pCloud if personal storage and its advertised plan choices appeal; Sync.com or Proton Drive if privacy-focused storage is the priority; and IDrive if backup and recovery are the main need. Treat MEGA as a candidate to investigate against your requirements, not as a verified winner on the facts established here.

If you are not sure, identify the task OneDrive fails at and trial a small set of files in the alternative before migrating everything. Encryption, collaboration, and backup are different benefits; choose the one that addresses your actual risk or friction rather than assuming any single service provides all three equally.
