If you have time for one game before Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, play Metroid Prime Remastered. It is the first game in the Prime series and the closest match for the 3D exploration and scanning style associated with that subseries. Prime 4: Beyond has already released; this is an optional catch-up guide, not a list of required prerequisites.
Which Metroid game should you play first?
Choose based on what you want to get from the series: Prime-format familiarity, classic 2D exploration, or a guided story and modern action. The Prime games and the side-scrolling mainline games are distinct ways into Metroid, so you do not need to complete the 2D saga to try Prime 4.

For one game: Metroid Prime Remastered
Start here if your goal is to become familiar with the Prime subseries before Prime 4. Nintendo calls it “the first entry in the Metroid Prime series.” That makes it the clearest single pick for Prime-style 3D exploration, while its refreshed presentation and control options make it a straightforward entry point.
For two games: Prime Remastered and Super Metroid
Pair these if you want to experience both sides of Metroid: Prime’s first-person 3D approach and the classic side-scrolling exploration of the 2D games. They are complementary samplers, not two required chapters in one continuous lead-in to Prime 4.

For the 2D story: Zero Mission, Super Metroid, Fusion, then Dread
This optional route follows the 2D mainline arc from the original’s story through its later developments. Zero Mission retells the original adventure; Super Metroid and Fusion continue the 2D series; Dread is described as its fifth mainline game and culmination. Choose this route for the 2D saga itself, not because Prime 4 requires it.
How Prime and the 2D games fit together
Metroid Prime is a 3D subseries, while the side-scrolling games make up a separate mainline arc. Nintendo Life’s chronology places the Prime titles between the original or Zero Mission and Metroid II; that placement helps explain where Prime sits in the broader series, but it does not turn every earlier game into a prerequisite for Prime 4. Nintendo Life’s chronology also identifies Dread as the fifth mainline 2D game.

Where to play them
Nintendo’s UK and Australia platform guides list Metroid Prime Remastered and Metroid Dread for the Switch family. They also list Metroid, Zero Mission, Super Metroid, Metroid II: Return of Samus and Fusion as Nintendo Classics for Nintendo Switch Online members. Catalogs and subscription terms vary by region, so check Nintendo’s local service page before relying on a particular classic being available. If buying a game, check that the retailer listing matches your region and platform and whether it is a physical or digital edition. For classic games, Nintendo Switch Online access may be simpler than seeking original cartridges; cartridge searches make most sense for collectors.
