For one detector that can handle parks, fields, beaches, and shallow water, the Minelab EQUINOX 900 is the strongest all-round pick in this group. The Nokta Legend is the value-oriented alternative, while the Nokta Simplex+ is the simpler entry-level choice for tighter budgets.
Best metal detectors at a glance
| Detector | Best fit | Frequency approach | Water and key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minelab EQUINOX 900 | One detector for varied terrain, including beaches and shallow water | Simultaneous Multi-IQ, plus six selectable single frequencies: 4, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 40 kHz | IP68 waterproofing to 5 m (16 ft); four modes; 119 target-ID segments; 1.2 kg (2.8 lb). Figures and features are from Minelab’s current product page. |
| Nokta Legend / Legend 2 | Value-oriented alternative for serious beginners through experienced users | Simultaneous multi-frequency, according to 2026 comparison coverage | Specific waterproof depth, weight, target-ID resolution, included accessories, and warranty: not stated in the cited 2026 comparisons. |
| Nokta Simplex+ | Beginners and lower budgets | 12 kHz VLF, according to a 2026 buying comparison | Waterproof entry-level model, according to that comparison; a waterproof depth is not stated there. |
Use the table to narrow the shortlist, then match the detector to where you will search and what you will recover. A detector that suits dry parks is not automatically the best choice for wet sand or underwater use.
Why the EQUINOX 900 is the best all-round choice
The EQUINOX 900 combines simultaneous Multi-IQ operation with Park, Field, Beach, and Gold modes. It also offers adjustable recovery speed, tracking ground balance, and automatic, manual, and continuous noise cancellation. That mix makes it a flexible option for buyers who expect to move between different locations rather than specialize in one.
Minelab describes its approach this way: “Minelab’s proven simultaneous multiple frequency technology gives you the power of multiple detectors working for you at the same time.” The product also allows operation at six individual frequencies when a user wants to select one rather than use Multi-IQ.

That relative price position is not a permanent price quote. Retail prices, stock, regional versions, and bundle contents change, so compare the exact model and package available where you live. The cited comparisons do not establish every specification needed for a direct side-by-side decision; check the exact regional Legend model’s waterproof rating, weight, included coils, and warranty before purchase.
When to choose the Nokta Simplex+
The Simplex+ is the entry-level pick here for a beginner or a buyer with a tighter budget. A 2026 buying comparison identifies it as a waterproof, 12 kHz VLF detector, rather than a simultaneous multi-frequency machine like the Legend or EQUINOX 900.

That makes it a different tier, not simply a cheaper substitute with identical capabilities. If simultaneous multi-frequency operation is a priority, compare the Legend and EQUINOX 900 instead. If you mainly want an accessible detector for getting started, the Simplex+ is the lower-cost category to investigate. Verify the depth rating and the contents of the particular package before taking it into water.
How to choose by where you will detect
Beaches and shallow water
Prioritize the detector’s stated waterproof depth and its ability to operate stably on wet sand. The EQUINOX 900 has an IP68 rating to 5 m (16 ft) on Minelab’s current product page, which makes it the clearest documented choice here for submersion. Check the exact model and coil configuration before submerging any detector; do not assume that a product described only as waterproof has the same depth rating.

Parks and relic hunting
For parks and fields, focus on target separation, adjustable recovery speed, ground balance, noise cancellation, and how the detector feels during a long search. The EQUINOX 900’s listed recovery-speed adjustment and ground and noise controls support this kind of varied use. The Legend is a reasonable comparison if value is a stronger concern, but confirm its relevant controls and specifications on the exact model you are considering.
Gold-focused searching
The EQUINOX 900 includes a Gold mode, but that alone does not establish that it is the best choice for every type of gold prospecting. Match a detector to your intended ground and targets, and compare the exact capabilities and operating guidance for the models available in your region.
Best Value

Grab it and share joyful outdoor adventure time with your whole family.
What to compare before buying
- Frequency operation: Decide whether simultaneous multi-frequency operation or a single-frequency detector fits your needs. The Legend and EQUINOX 900 are identified as simultaneous multi-frequency choices; the Simplex+ is listed as a 12 kHz VLF model.
- Water rating: Look for an explicit depth rating if you plan to submerge the detector. “Waterproof” without a stated depth is not enough to establish suitability for underwater use.
- Target handling: Compare target-ID resolution, recovery-speed adjustment, ground balance, and noise cancellation for your intended locations. A target-ID number is an aid, not a guarantee of what is buried.
- Comfort and package: Check weight, shaft design, included coils, battery type, and warranty for the exact regional version. Only the EQUINOX 900’s weight and listed included coil sizes are specified in the details above.
- Total cost: Add the recovery equipment you will need, not just the detector price. Check bundle contents and local stock rather than treating an indicative price tier as a fixed current price.
Budget for the tools that recover a find
A detector locates a target; it does not retrieve it. A metal-detecting pinpointer and suitable digging or recovery tools are practical companion purchases, as described in a 2026 EQUINOX 900 review. They help complete the recovery process after the detector identifies an area to investigate.
Headphones, a finds pouch, a spare search coil, and a coil cover may also be useful, but check compatibility with the selected model before adding them. Prioritize recovery tools first if the budget is limited.
