For an always-on YouTube meditation stream, keep the computer awake while the encoder is running, but let the display turn off. In Windows 11, set screen-off and sleep timers separately, try Best Power Efficiency, and use a simple OBS scene with an output profile and bitrate your upload connection can sustain. Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended: no universal setting guarantees a particular electricity saving or uninterrupted uptime.
Set Windows so the screen turns off but the PC stays awake
-
Open Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
-
Choose the screen-off timeout you want. The display can turn off without stopping the stream.

Set the plugged-in sleep timeout so the PC does not sleep while OBS is expected to stream. Windows provides separate controls for screen-off and sleep; a sleeping computer cannot keep sending the stream.

Under Settings → System → Power & battery → Power Mode, try Best Power Efficiency. Microsoft says this mode reduces consumption by limiting background activity, but it does not specify the saving for a streaming PC. Check OBS and YouTube stream health after changing it; behavior can vary by computer.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide documents the power mode and separate screen and sleep controls. Menu names or availability can vary with the device and Windows configuration.
Reduce the work OBS has to do
Build the scene around what the meditation stream actually needs. For a static image with audio, extra animation, processing, and complex overlays add work without necessarily improving the viewing experience.
-
Remove unused sources and filters. OBS notes that sources may consume resources even when they are not visible.
-
Prefer a static visual if the stream does not need animation. Avoid unnecessary browser sources and complex scenes, which can be resource-intensive.

If the intended viewing experience does not require 1080p, consider 720p as a lower-workload starting point. This is a practical inference from OBS guidance that lower output resolution and frame rate reduce work, not a meditation-specific YouTube preset.

OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide explains how output settings, scene complexity, sources, filters, and GPU contention can affect performance.
Choose OBS output and YouTube encoder settings
There is no official meditation-stream preset. Choose resolution and frame rate based on the content and your viewers, then match the bitrate to YouTube’s guidance and your measured upload capacity. Lower resolution and frame rate can reduce encoding and rendering work, but you should check the resulting image and stream stability on your own setup.
Start with a modest profile
For a mostly static stream, 720p at 30 fps is one reasonable starting point if it meets your quality needs. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264 at 720p30 with a bitrate range of 3 Mbps minimum to 8 Mbps recommended. If you need 1080p30, its H.264 range is 5 Mbps minimum to 14 Mbps recommended. These are platform bitrate recommendations, not measurements of electricity use, and the recommended figure is not a requirement for every stream.

| H.264 output | YouTube bitrate guidance | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | A possible lower-workload starting point when 720p is sufficient. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | Use when the added resolution suits the content and upload connection. |
Measure upload speed and leave enough headroom for a stable broadcast rather than assuming the connection can sustain its headline rate continuously. YouTube recommends reliable upload capacity and testing the connection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Apply the encoder requirements
-
Use CBR (constant bitrate).
-
Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
-
YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
-
Use a frame rate appropriate to the content; YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. A static meditation image usually does not need a high frame rate, but decide based on the actual visuals.
See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for its current codec-specific recommendations and stream-health advice. A bitrate that is too high for the connection can undermine reliability; a lower setting may trade image quality for headroom.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
-
Run an upload speed test on the connection and select a bitrate that it can reliably support.
-
Start a test stream with audio and visual motion similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube specifically advises testing with similar audio and movement.
-
Check the sound, picture, and YouTube stream-health messages. Verify the stream remains healthy after the screen turns off and after switching to Best Power Efficiency.
-
Leave the setup running long enough to catch issues that may not appear in a quick preview. Monitor stream health and messages rather than assuming a successful start proves continuous operation.

Measure power use instead of guessing
The cited Windows, OBS, and YouTube guidance does not give a measured wattage saving for this exact always-on meditation-stream workload. Results depend on the computer, encoder, scene, output settings, and other activity. If you want a direct comparison, an optional plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure the PC’s draw before and after changes. Compare under similar conditions; no specific meter has been tested or endorsed here.
